I recently started getting into the whole super-hero comic thing and since I've seen a lot of Marvel avatars around here this seemed like a good place to ask.

So far I've really enjoyed reading most of the Civil War, the Captain America Lives Omnibus and the Thor Omnibus.

So what would the escapist recommend me to read?

I read a lot of Marvel and I tend to read them based on event. You read Civil war, did you read all the tie ins?

Civil war + tie ins is what really got me into Marvel in the first place, and it is a good way of getting introduced to a large gallery of characters.

Other good events are House of M, and all the Cosmic Marvel stuff (Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest, War of Kings, Realm of Kings and the Thanos Imperative)

The cool thing about Cosmic marvel is that it is a smaller set of comics, and both Annihilation stories are collected into one set of books, so you dont have to go outr and find everything that ties in to it.

Cosmic Marve = Marvel in space, with all their cosmic heroes.

Not to piggy back off this thread, but I'd like to get into some more comics (especially Marvel) and I was wondering what the easiest way to do that is? Concerning the years of continuity i mean...

OT: I recommed graphic novels sorry not exactly helpful, but as you can see I need help here too haha.

I've read most of the Tie-ins that were released in TPB form (Still need Black Panther, Wolverine and War Crimes)
Are the ones not released as a TPB worth buying (like She-Hulk, Ghost Rider, X-Factor, Cable & Deadpool,... )

Are the Cosmic Marvel stories connected (like the Dark Reign event following the Secret Invasion) or are they unrelated to each other.
I'll add them to my wantlist anyway.

Three essential reads are Alias, Captain Britain and MI13 and Nextwave : Agents of H.A.T.E.

Quoted for truth. The cosmic universe is even better than the regular one.

Yeah they follow each other quite closely. It's also good to read Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova inbetween them. Both fantastic series.

It's not too bad if you jump in at Avengers Disassembled and focus on the crossovers that link together (House of M, Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, Dark Regin and Siege). Just focus on the main crossover books and \things like New/Mighty/Dark Avengers. If you find any characters you enjoy follow up there series if you can.

Cosmic Marvel is written more or less by just two guys, so their continuity between events is even better than the earth stuff. You'll be rather confused if you don't start with Annihilation to be honest :p

Dark Reign was a rather loose Event, with more of a mood and feeling than a continuous plot like Civil War and Secret Invasion did. I'ts well worth reading some of it, and you HAVE to read Siege.

I can also recommend getting a subscription to the Marvel digital comics thing at marvel.com, their reader sort of suck, but their library is HUGE and a very good place to read all those single issue tie ins and stuff.

this is my recommendation as well. Either that or start with Heroic Age.
Disassembled was sort of the first modern event that has been the basis of most of the plot up till Siege.

Heroic Age started last year and was said to be a "fresh start" to ease new readers into comics again.
What I have found is that wikipedia helps as you read. If you find something odd just wiki it, after a while you'll know quite a lot.

Comic Continuity isn't as scary as Movie Bob wants it to be, just pick an event and start there :)

These are all Vertigo/DC comics (as in they're all produced by DC in the Vertigo imprint) but they're awesome. Especially the Sandman! (I dressed as Death from the Sandman last Halloween so of course I love it...)

Butttt, they're not so superhero-comic-y, if that's what you're after. They're dark and based a lot about myth and fantasy (although they're based in the DC universe so they take place alongside Superman and Batman duking it out with bad guys).

Marvel-wise, I'd mostly recommend Deadpool, mostly because he's a different and more complex character than most of your superhero types (and I love a sarcastic humour). I love X-Men as well, although I haven't been reading it recently and I've heard that it's getting a bit rubbish at the moment...

I found the best way to do this if you're not prepared to buy all the old ones (they come in graphic novel type books, one story arc at a time, but that's still a LOT of books to get a hold of) was get one of those DK encyclopedias. I have the general Marvel one, the X-Men one and the Fantastic Four one (which I didn't really need because I had my uncle's old FF comics so I'd read most of issues from decades back). They're well sized but not too big, but they're a good way of catching up on all the main plot points you need to know have happened.
Or you could just read up about it on the internet if you don't want to buy a book just for the sake of having it ordered neatly for you.

New Avengers and a bunch of the other Avengers are alright. I would also say read a bunch of the stuff on wikipedia about the pre-existing stuff just to have an idea of preceding major events. Some of the Omnibus' that have most of the backstory and early years in them on certain characters could be a good start. You can get a lot of them, my library even has a bunch of those omnibus'.

I would recommend Captain America, Spider-man, Iron Man - Start with the big guys, then if you like any smaller guys that happen to appear, go check out their comics. However, if I was you, I would try DC. Nothing against Marvel, just imo I prefer DC. Green Lantern story arcs are epic and the villains are a little better in my opinion, especially in the Flash. Not by alot, though. Oh also, DC has Constantine. So. Yay DC.

Never liked the tie ins for that, but 1602 was decent.
In case anyone wonders 1602 is a story about the marvel universe happening in 1602 instead of the modern times, and is not part og the normal Marvel universe continuity.

The Dark Avengers series was fantastic. Seek out the TPBs of Dark Avengers: Assemble and Dark Avengers: Molecule Man. I've also heard good things about Siege but I've not gotten around to reading that yet. I'd advise steering clear from the current X-Men stuff, it's a bit of a mess
I'm actually more of a DC lover so if you want any recommendations for DC, go with Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, 52, Batman R.I.P. and all of the current Geoff Johns Green Lantern stuff as well as the new Batman & Robin stories by Grant Morrison

The "Unstoppable" arc in Astonishing X-men, the one written by Joss Whedon. Forget the mediocre Serenity comics, this is waaaaaaaaay better.
