If you want just Marvel I can't recommend anything higher than Garth Ennis' Punisher issues.
(Punisher gets spell-checked?)
Some highlights:
Up is Down and Black is White
Punisher: Born
From First to Last
The Slavers
The Long Cold Dark
Basically you can pick any volume Ennis wrote and be a winner. I'd suggest reading them all since there's lots of great continuity.

Wolverine Noir is a one-off comic, but I still enjoyed it. It's set in the 1920s, and it's an Alternate Universe-type story where the characters have different back stories and different jobs, outlooks on life and whatnot.

I also generally enjoy the Ultimate X-Men series. It's only 30 books or so, but it has cross-overs with spiderman, the avengers.... it's quite good. It takes the core plot ideas of the original X-Men comics and re-tells them with a new twist here and there. I feel like I'm making it sound terrible, lol. It's X-Men, for people that are too overwhelmed by like 50 years of story to read through.

Yeah Runaways is a pretty good series, and it is pretty stand alone too, so not a lot of knowledge needed. Except maybe for the Young avengers cross over.

Molly Hayes = Best super hero ever!

OT: I recommed graphic novels sorry not exactly helpful, but as you can see I need help here too haha.
The easiest way is to just accept the fact that not everything is going to make absolute sense when you first read it.

Just go into a comic book shop and pick up some titles you like the covers of. If you like what you're reading then continue to read it. It's easy enough to research past histories of characters, or what books they appeared in previously if you want to pick those up as well.

It's a method of finding good comics that has served me well, even to this day.

Iron Man Noir is also really good.

That's the ongoing Punisher Max series right?
Was planning on picking up all those volumes either way.
I just wonder, does it take place in the same universe as all the other marvel characters?

Out of curiosity: is the "Immortal Iron Fist" series any good?
It's a kung-fu billonaire who fights crime, how could that be bad?

Ennis doesn't write the current MAX. But he wrote 10 arcs over 60 issues. It's some of his best work and the best Punisher ever written.

The first volumes really good and most of the Joss Whedon stuff in volume 2 is decent. But it's started to consistently lose quality with that time travel arc.

Ultimate X-men and the Ultimates (1+2) are very good starter for beginners, no long continuity to keep track of and a fresh look at many old character. Just make sure to stop Ultimate X-men at the end of Kirkman's run and stop before Ultimates 3 and Ultimatium.

Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth - Head Trip is my favourite right now.

In fact, Deadpool is just my favourite Marvel character.

It depends what sort of comics you want. The only Marvel I'm currently picking up is Daniel Way's Deadpool, which I've loved every issue of (Possibly even more than Joe Kelly's run, heathen that I am). Another shout here for Runaways, though I've only read the first volume. I'd highly recommend Mark Millar's Ultimates.

But really if you want to read good comics don't look for characters, find good writers.
Warren Ellis has done a lot of good Marvel stuff if that's still what you're looking for.

And please please please avoid any Jeph Loeb comics like the plague.

Um I thought the Joss Whedon IS the time travel stuff... if you are referring to when the kids ends up in 1907 and meet Karla.

Actually you're correct, I thought he started a bit earlier for some odd reason, yeah whe Brian K. Vaughn finished it dropped significantly in quality.

That I can agree with, but it is still a cool series I think. Wish they would bring it back again with new writers.

I recently found out about this one:

Origins of Marvel Comics TP
An all-star lineup of creators brings you the origins of Marvel's greatest heroes! Short, accessible origin stories you'll want to cut out and tape up on your wall! From the Avengers to the X-Men! From Iron Man, Thor, the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man to Hulk, Deadpool, Black Widow and the Punisher! Cyclops! Wolverine! Magneto! They're all here! Plus: In the aftermath of SIEGE, Steve Rogers assesses the state of Earth's heroes, villains and mutants in almost 200 pages of character files! Collecting ORIGINS OF MARVEL COMICS, ORIGINS OF MARVEL COMICS: X-MEN, HEROIC AGE: SUPER HEROES, HEROIC AGE: VILLAINS and HEROIC AGE: X-MEN.

It definitely looks like a nice introduction into the marvel universe.
Now if only someone who has already read it could give his views on this.

That a shit-load of books. If I may recomend, don't buy spin-off books for a crossover unless you already like or know about the characters. Most are unnecessary, it's better to just read the main crossover books. That said totally keep Secret Invasion: Captain Britain, it's pure brilliance.

That said two very good books aren't on that list. Alias, written by by Brian Michael Bendis (the architect of the whole crisis-crossover thing recently) about a retired superhero turned private eye, it's really good and a very mature view on the marvel universe.

And honestly there's one book far more important than any on that list (except Cable and Deadpool, that rocks):

NEXTWAVE!
It's an absolute distillation of the superhero genre. No plot lines, characters, emotions, nothing whatsoever. It's people posing in the street for no good reason. It is people getting kicked, and then exploding. It is a pure comic book, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. And afterwards, they will explode

So I recently bought some of the previously mentioned list and I also picked up Chaos War and Chaos War: Avengers, now I'm wondering are there any "must read" events between Siege and the Chaos War?
