I lost thane, legion (I went online and found taps on youtube for both) and Jack (I laughed). This play through I'm going to upgrade the normandy's shield, I was proud that I lost no one after we landed though.

I had Legion as the Tech Specialist and he got missle-faced. Other than that, I had no people die under me.

I used Garrus to escort the crew members, I had Jacob do the distraction team...I think; Used Samara for the Biotics, and either had Zaeed or Miranda for the first strike team. Probably Zaeed.

First time I lost no one at all, but the second time a few hours ago:
Jack when the Eyelaser robots shot through the hull
Tali when the kinetic barriers overloaded
Thane during the strafing run of the collector ship
Mordin while closing the door
Legion was carried off by seeker swarms
Jacob died while looking after the normandy crew
The normandy crew died somewhere between Jacob's death and the normandy
Miranda died holding the line
Samara and Grunt survived
Sheppard couldn't be arsed to hold on for 3 more seconds

Turns out that loyalty and ship upgrades aren't optional, who'da thunk it?

Oh, then Thane died exactly for the same reason my Mordin did on my first try: Incompetent first fire team leader. As a result, your Thane got nervous, the doors got stuck and he caught a bullet to the face closing the door manually.

Did you do the loyalty missions for Zaeed and Mordin? If so, then I don't really know... And at what point exactly did your Mordin's off-screen death occur?[/quote]

EDIT: sorry, I cant get these quote things right

For Zaeed, I failed his loyalty because I chose to save some civilians rather than go after his target (one time chance). And Mordin was shown after my team left after the human reaper's death, though I did complete his loyalty mission

Ive done a bit of research into this and I think this is more or less how the decision making should be done to keep everyone alive:

-Squad leader HAS to be Miranda or Garrus.
-Best bet with tech specialist is Legion or Tali (anyone else has a good chance of getting shot).
-Escorting the crew to the Normandy I think can be anyone, so long as they're loyal to you.
-Biotic specialist needs to be one of the characters who has the "adept" class. I know Samara works, and I'm pretty sure Jack does too.
-I'm pretty sure both people you take with you for the final fight have to be loyal for them to survive.

One last thing: as far as I know your Paragon/Renegade rating doesn't affect the final mission, though just about everything (including all of the above) is massively based on each characters loyalty. So, for example, if you put a loyal Garrus in charge of the strike team all of them should live, if he isn't loyal then there's a fair chance he or one of the others will die.

Hope this helps!
Samara is actually also good choice the first time you choose a leader (Miranda even compliments you for making an excellent choice, Samara being both experienced and disciplined), but she got killed when she lead the other team the second time you split up. Not sure what the logic is there.

And Jack worked well for me when you need to choose a biotic. First had my doubts how well she'd handle defence, but then I figured that she is way too stubborn to just collapse half-way. Still, I'd guess Samara might be the safer choice there if there's any difference.

If your Paragon and Renegade rank doesn't matter, does it matter whether you take the Paragon or Renegade options when you make the speech? I chose the Paragon option first (the bit about fighting for everyone in the galaxy) and Renegade option next (about how you are gonna make the Collectors feel fear). Seems smart to throw a bone for both the heroes and the psychotic killers in your team.

First time I lost everyone except Zaeed, Thane, Jacob, and Grunt.
I'm busy with my second play through, because I refuse to let anyone (that I like) die.

I think it is slightly random. I mean I had everyone loyal and had Garrus in charge of the fire team. He led everyone safely and when Shep and Legion were trying to close the door legion got a shot to the face and died. It didn't really make sense but it happened and there wasn't much I could do about it.

Thane. Don't know why, I thought I did everything right, but fortunately he was it. I lost pretty much all the good female members of the crew like Kelly and the girl in the Engine Room. Now who will feed my fish?

I thought Samara seemed like a good team leader choice as well, but if you have her lead the secondary team the first time your group splits up, your person in the tubes will die. I'm not entirely certain of the logic of this, but even Tali or Legion will die at this point if Samara leads the second team.

the way to save character members is to only send loyal squad members on the important jobs. so all you need to do is have legion do the ducts, garrus or miranda take the other team, and samara or jack create the barrier

When i finished the suicide mission in ME2, i couldn't help thinking what little details could have saved the different crew members aboard in the mission.

I myself lost Thane, Zaeed and Mordin (Thane in the shafts, Zaeed as 2nd squad leader, and Mordin at, apparently, random).

So, who did you guys lose on your mission, if any at all?
Their loyalty, your ship's upgrades and your leader selections make your crew members live/die.

And in the shaft, I assume you didn't reach each of the 8 control panels in time...?

First time I lost my tech dude because, apparently, Jacob doesn't qualify as squad leader (Second try says Garrus does) and that's the only person I lost the first time. Loaded my save and did it right; there was no way these motherless fucks were going to kill anyone under my protection. :p
I finde miranda and Guarrus work the best. I have never lost a crew member. i always get their loyalty and all of the defensive upgrades to the ship

My first time through I chose Legion for the vents and Samara as the fire team leader and Legion got the missile to the face. Sad thing was, I had only used him for his loyalty mission prior to that since I had done everything else. I then lost Mordin somewhere between them holding the line and the retreat to the ship. I guess he got shot? I also saved what I think was all of the crew.

I'm on my second one now and I REALLY don't want anyone to bite it this time. Does having the right leader paired with a tech specialist make the difference? I used Tali as the specialist and Samara again and Tali got it in the face. Then I reloaded and tried Jacob in the tubes with Garrus as leader. Jacob got it in the face. What does it take it make it through that part with no one dying?!? I really want everyone to live and my first playthrough I made all the right choices (except Mordin still died, so maybe I'll send him back with the crew). What combos got the tech specialist out alive?

EDIT: Nevermind I got everyone out! Except the crew. I kind of let them down, as they all died except for Chakwas

first time through, I got through with no squadmates dying on me. but all my captured crewmembers except Chakwas died. it was depressing.

second time through, no one in my crew died, which worked for me.

My first time through, I lost Legion and Miranda. I almost rage-quit when Legion died, but Miranda... meh. She was a ho-beast.

Real Sheps bring everyone back.

and someone earlier mentioned that Jacob isn't a viable squad leader choice. this isn't true (I regularly pick Jacob to lead since I usually want Miranda or Garrus with me.). the three viable squad leaders are Miranda, Jacob and Garrus. the Tech specialists are Tali and Legion. Jack and Samara/Morinth are your Biotic choices, and the best escort is Mordin, because he's the least capable fighter in your crew.

I found a list, I believe on the ME wikia that lists the so called 'random death' probabilities for each character. where Mordin is the most likely to die, even if you do everything right, and Grunt is the least likely. if I can find the link I'll post it.

Funnily enough, Thane and Zaeed for exactly the same reasons.

I've not played through the ending again, actually; I can't bear the thought of sending Tali, Legion or Kasumi into that damn pressure-cooker of a tunnel, because they are my favourites and I can't take it if they got a missile to the face for their troubles.

I didn't lose anybody. All the upgrades made perfect sense beyond the tactical considerations: I just wanted to have more loots! In the mission itself, the choices all seemed obvious enough to me. Garrus had lead an asymetrical campaign against the combined underworld of Omega after he helped me defeat Saren so he was an obvious choice for team leader. Miranda didn't get along with Jack so I kept them apart by having Miranda on my Team. Tali seemed the most fragile so I figured she had a better shot with me than with the second party. Legion is Geth, who are legendary hackers so he was the obvious choice for the shafts. Samara had centuries of experience in the use of Biotics so it made sense to have her do the shield thingie. Jacob seemed the most sensible person to send back with the crew since he could clearly handle himself in a fight, and if push came to shove I knew I could count on him to get as many out as he could.

To be honest, it was hardly difficult to keep everyone alive. As long as you're charismatic, it's just common sense as to who to use for the diffent tasks. 'The shaft needs a tech specialist? Maybe I should use a tech specialist, DERP."

As for Mordin, he's obviously pathetic in battle, so I used the escort task as a chance to get him away from the worst fighting.
