I would say it's been the best game of the last decade... And it has definately set a very high standard for GOTY this year. You won't hear me complaining if another game steals it as it would have have to be even more awesome than Mass Effect 2 was...

Clever Edit.
I understand this is above English for 5 year olds. It shouldn't be anything new though. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis]

Who put MW2 as GOTY?
GameSpy and GameTrailers. You're not wrong though, Uncharted 2 seems to be the majority; which leads to me believing that GOTY is not really about quality either.

Yeah, I went there.

At what age does one learn about articles in speech? Or perhaps when to make nouns plural?

About at the age we also learn about typos.

I don't know if it will be game of the year for everyone but for me this is the game of the century (at least until ME3). I know that is a bold claim but the story and character interactions are incredible and it has made every other game look worse by comparison. I am slightly depressed knowing that the magic of the first playthrough is lost.

I thought it was a great game and it'll be tough to beat but I don't think it'll be Game of the Year. It has the disadvantage of being released in January, I guess.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I personally was disappointed.

First, I hated the lack of big choices and emotional connection this game produced. Dragon Age and the first ME did a far better job with characterization and the storyline. Also, the ending...I'm sorry, but upon seeing that baby Reaper I just burst out laughing. The thing was so impractical, so...odd...it looked Mass Effect had been crossed with the Terminator series and some kind of Japanese giant mech manga. Very narmy in my mind.

In short, the game was high on style, short on substance, and the ending fell flat. Disappointing, really.

Mass Effect 2, for me, is one of the best games ever. You come to know and love these characters, and running the risk of losing them on the final mission, you get gray hairs sending the team away to handle themselves, worried they might not make it. I don't care what anyone says, for me, Mass Effect 2 is game of the year, and that knowledge is enough.

Also, ME is one of the best scifi universes ever created (yes, right up there next to the greats Star Wars and Star Trek).

You do know it's just rolled over into February, right? We have an entire year left. A year which will likely include the release of not only another WoW expansion (Guaranteed to be a best seller) but also Starcraft 2.

You know, the sequel to the game which is a national sport in South Korea.

And that's just two games off the top of my head. I'm sure there's a dozen more super high quality titles ready to hit shelves.
Just because it's popular, doesn't mean it's good. See Transformers 2 for further details.

Hey man, I'm crazy about the game too, but don't you think it might be a tad bit early for this?

I would agree with you if another Halo game wasn't coming out. I like to preserve my opinions for when everything I love is in the race. It's just a bit too early to call it.

Just because it's good doesn't mean it'll win GOTY. Madden NFL 2004 won Spike TV's GOTY 2003 (Yes, those year numbers are right).

Definitely agree, even if it doesn't end up being "Of the Year" (Since that title will probably go to some game with loads of fan boys rooting for it *Cough* Halo *Cough* Cataclysm *Cough*) It is the best game I've ever played.

ME1 is ten times better the combat system in ME2 is so bad, so is the leveling system, i should get experience for killing nimes not just for completing missions, and skills i played ME1 as a Vangaurd so i thought i might play as a vangaurd again but the class is terrible it is hardly ever effective to use Charge because as soon as you Charge your enemy you will most likely die in 3-5 seconds, Shouckwave is only good for enemies near you and pull raley hits at a far distance. There is no good long range attacks for the Vangaurd against Bosses that are in the air like gunships or other things. In ME1 you had an arsenal of good Biotic abilites as a Vangaurd, Warp, a good barrier(the barrier in ME2 is garbage basically just like regain sheild in ME1), and many other Biotics. Also Biotics barely help at all half the enemies you have to remove their shields beforwe attacking them with biotics and by time that is done it only takes a few shots to kill them anyways.

I had already sank 8 hours into my Vangaurd before it got ridiculous in Combat and i didn't want to redo those 8 hours. So i started a Adept for my Playthrough 2 and put half an hour into it so i could play that when i finished, the Adept is so much beter compared to the Vangaurd.

Now for the cover system: If i want to switch guns why would i leave cover? the cover system is the worst thing about combat. it takes so long to get into cover that you press A too many times and leap over the cover then get shot for 3-5 seconds and die. You get into cover when trying to escape death but too early because you're holding A to sprint, and you hug an out of place wall only to get shot in the back.

The inventory system is stupid IMO i liked the ME1 inventory why would i want to only be able to upgrade my gun once or only have 2 choices for each type of gun. It was a dumb revamp choice.

Even the new charcters i diddn't feel that sense of connection with them like in ME1. I honestly thought Jacob was just a through away charcter like the guy at the start of ME1 not a charcter that stays with you. A few solid characters though sparked my interest like "Archangel" (No spoiler), Grunt, Thane, and The Salarian Doctor and Legion where characters i wanted to live not just doing it for the achievement. I hope the first 4 i named will make it to ME3 but maybe not one of them because of his "problem"

I don't know why fans and reviewers place ME2 on such a high pedistal above it's Father ME1. every revamp they did was very shoty even replacing the grenades some of the heavy weopons don't replace the grenades well. The skill balancing between clases is horible. The leveling system is horrible. The new shield/health system is horrible. Combat is horible. What do people see in this game to palce it before ME1?...

/rant onto my positive thoughts...

After all that i sill bought it at midnight and beat it by thursday night (loging in 33 hours within 3 days) to do so. I would like to know what dificulty most people played on because this might factor into their emense enjoyment, because it is hard as balls on the second highest difficulty and may skew my opion of combat. After all my hate for some new features I would still give the game a 9/10 and this is why i enjoyed the parts like Conversations, Some of the new Characters, the chance to die at the end, the plot, the continuation of story, the twists, how your original choices effect the game and how characters from the original add spice to the story, The ability to interupt conversations with Paragon or renegade actions. I can't wait for ME3 hopefully it will find the perfect medium between these games.

I really doubt anything will top ME2 this year.

If any other game gives me as much fun and thought this year it'll be a damn good year.

Bad call

If you turn out to be wrong, you look like a fool.
If you turn out to be right, people will focus on the fact that you didn't even wait for some of the other games come out.

I see very little good that can come from giving such a title this early.
"So far" might be acceptable, but "Of the Year" Is a bit early.
This. It is fantastic, but let the other games coming out this year have a chance, way to early to. So far there have been lots of strong early releases, so if this is an indicator of 2009 there could be lost of greater games to come...but none seem to original to me, where is my Mirror's Edge? Where the innovation? Anyone care to list some to keep an eye out for this year?
