Long time lurker here so yay, first thread made! :D

Anyway, I have a few extra moneyz lying around and I wanted to get a game but I don't know what.
I've been excited for Catherine for a while now but the recent reviews I've seen have lessened my excitement for it.
Then there's Mass Effect 2 which I've yet to play considering I only have a PS3 and I really didn't like the first Mass Effect but since it's supposedly an improvement, which should I spend my cash on?
Or if there's another game I should get besides these two, which one?

Sorry if this has been done to death or if you lot don't like these type of threads. Just needed some help with it.

Catherine. Weird, awesome storyline, addictive gameplay. However, if your after the story, play easy mode, if your after soul crushing difficulty, play normal, if you want to lose your mind to insanity, try hard

It's no problem, really.

Just out of curiousity, why did you not like Mass Effect? I'm not going to flame you. Just need to help with the conclusion game.

Catherine. ME2 is good, but there's a lot of other stuff like it. What didn't you like about the first one, btw? Catherine is pretty unique, and definitely something I'd play if I had the platform. And if I wasn't trying to avoid this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/9031-Critical-Miss-The-Catherine-Experience].

erm...they're entirely different, no-one could tell you unless they knew what you like specifically, as they have little to compare to

If you can find Mass Effect 2 for the right price you shouldn't hesitate to get it. The ps3 version is about ?20 in argos at the moment.

While ME2 is an improvement I think, if you didn't like the first one, I'd say go for Catherine. Unless money is an issue. Because the former is about 1/3 the price.
But yea, probably Catherine there.

Apples to oranges much? To make an effective recommendation you should tell us what kinds of games you already own so we can hopefully try to extrapolate which of the two games you would enjoy the most. If you ask me personally, I found ME2 to have a more sweeping grandiose story line, but the characters were harder to get into. Vice versa for me when it comes to Catherine.

A lot of people found the first one tedious or even boring, calling the second one much better. Obviously these are the people who are used to dying every 5 seconds in fast-paced, high action games. I think they're both amazing games. The first one being more of an RPG and less shooter, it still has an awesome story that really needs to be played through because of the choices that are brought over. Number 2 on the other hand is much, MUCH more streamlined, with most of the RPG taken right out and replaced with fast-paced, fun combat. Equally important story, I might add.
Now, for this particular situation, I think Catherine would be worth a shot purely for the story. But from what I've seen, I'd hate to play through it that many times (it has multiple endings). Since you'd be playing the PS3 version of ME2, you'd be able to make the choices in the first game without even having to play it because of the awesome graphic novel style intro. IMHO, Mass Effect 2 is a much better choice for the time being.

ME2 is a good game - despite everything - but renting it is enough. Catherine looks to be strange enough to buy and often lend to your friends... or dad.

I haven't played Catherine, so my recommendation is one-sided, but I would say get Mass Effect 2, except for the "unlimited ammo" from ME1 being replaced by thermal clips as ammo, which enemies don't seem to drop enough of when needed, ME2 is and improvement.

I'm probably going to get Catherine when it lowers in price. What I'm considering here for you is price. Catherine is at full price. I don't know about the PS3 copy, but I was able to get my 360 copy of ME2 for 20 bucks on Amazon. Now, for me, having all the DLC is a must. After I got all the DLC it came out to be around 32 dollars more, so a total of 52 dollars. So getting ME2 with all the DLC, is cheaper than it was stand alone at launch. I haven't looked at pricing, and I'm betting that Catherine is still somewhere in the area of 60 bucks.

You can also look at play time. I got 60 hours out of my first play through of ME2. I highly doubt you will get that out of Catherine, it being a puzzle and anime cinematic game and all.

I played the original for about... 2 hours or so and got bored of it. I couldn't figure out a lot of what to do and I couldn't change weapons. Maybe that makes me an idiot but I read the damn manual about 4 times but still couldn't figure out what to do. It was nice looking but just boring to me.

Yeah, I know these are totally different games but it's really all that's out that I don't have that I want/haven't played.

I enjoy Japanese games a lot. JRPGs make up the majority of my game shelf.
But I enjoy lots of different games. Strategy, RTS, Shooters, Co-op, Sci-fi, Action/adventure and so on. There's really no genre I don't like. I'm just weary about Mass Effect 2 since I didn't really like the first one.

Get Catherine. The only thing ME2 improved on was the graphics, everything else was equal or worse.

I'd say mass effect 2. I didn't like mass effect 1 because of the clunky combat and the beginning bored me. It was like I was a ADHD kid on crack when I played it, the beginning bored me. I loved mass effect 2, it had lots of action but also having the RPG in it, it wasn't just like the amount of dialogue of the bible in 2 hours (which was like mass effect 1).
Catherine I don't know about though.

Since the OP is from the UK, I looked at Amazon UK, and it has it for £23.94 with one left in stock.

The 360 version is £10.99.

Since I'm from the US, to amuse myself, I looked at the conversions. By US numbers the 360 version is around 18 USD, and the PS3 copy is around 32 USD.

Edit: I know the OP only has a PS3. I just wanted to point out the stupid-ness on the price difference with the same game. Yeah it just came out not too long ago for the PS3, but it is just insane to ask such price when right around the corner it is almost half as much.

All I can say is... try the demoes.

Both explain the games pretty good. Just try them and see what you like better. Mass Effect 2 is just spit-shined improvements of mechanics from the previous game. It's more linear but not in a bad sense. You won't get lost like I did while walking around in the citadel, but the cover combat... IT'S EVERYWHERE!

I have not had the pleasure of trying Catherine yet but I will give it a try later. What I saw and played, I liked. Just the only problem I have with it are the block puzzles which are the majority of the game. Not the difficulty, just the concept. I was expecting more varied types of mini-games during the nightmares, more than just blocks.

So I can't offer a solid opinion. I'm neutral. Both are great titles.
