From what I can make out the Quarians look roughly human so I don't think it would be a longshot from the Asari

You're judging her actual appearance based upon something you weren't meant to see in the first place? I'm not following the logic here.

Tali'zorah is done by Liz Sroka [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2245907/] and Bioware have a history of modeling the characters after the voice actors. If you look closely you can make out that Tali has the nose of Liz Sroka so I would imagine the rest would be an alien babe approximation.

I mean, aren't a bunch of character's modeled after their voice actors?

Skin, not fur or scales or feathers:
Fur: Best for mammals who haven't evolved to human like intelligence. Quarian's
Scales: Best for cold-blooded. In an enviro-suit, not needed so they would fuse together
feathers: Only useful for flight. Quarian's can not fly.

if you have the artbook, there is a page which has the outlines of tali's facial structure on it. She looks kinda humanoid, except with a bit bigger eyes, and slightly broader nose. Her "hair" is not dissimilar to that of the asari.
