I still hold up the belief that Mass Effect's combat system was a pile of shit. I loved the rest of the game though, if Mass Effect 2 improves on the combat I'll love it without a doubt.

Apparently they've improved it a lot. I've been reading a few hands-on previews and everyone has reported the combat to be more fluid and satisfying, in a Gears of War kinda way (i.e. cover-based).

The elevator loading screen thingies have apparently been completely changed, perhaps now we get cutscenes or something, like in the Darkness.

Yes, very pumped. It looks like everything has been improved. Heck, if it's half as good as Dragon Age, then in my opinion, it's topped a lot games coming out this generation.

Never played ME1, so I'll be interested in seeing how good it's sequel is. That's all I can add to this I'm afraid.

Meh, I wasnt really happy about the first one. It felt... boring. If it has more choices that actually affect something then I will be happy with it. The first one just felt bland imo.
Fair enough, different strokes and all that.

The first one is one of my all time favorites, and would be in my top 3 were it not for the niggly combat flaws and dull planets.

No. A Bioware game will never be a defining game of any generation.
They get the story and charaters right, but completely fuck up the combat and exploration.

Combat looks to be vastly improved:

This was just the biotic combat, the soldier is much more shooty and the techy one has bots and hacking and stuff.

Sorry to bump, but the first couple of reviews are out.

90% and 95% from two mags I read.

Critics can't always be trusted, but it's looking promising.

I don't see why people care for the sequal to a very mediocre game.
I'd go for the Gears of War series for your question.

Lancers will be the golden standard for bad ass weapon for a long time imho.

Mass Effect isn't about the guns, it's about the story and characters.

But the story and characters are also fairly bland.
That's your opinion.

Mine differs. I thought they were some of the best, most developed characters I've seen in any game.

I'm very excited about Mass Effect 2 and I think that it will be the same, if not better, than the first.
Each time I play Mass Effect, I get hooked on it and, to me, everything about the game is great. Even the Mako (I had no problems controlling it).

I'm utterly psyched for Mass Effect 2, given Mass Effect 1 is currently my favourite XBox game (even though the side missions and the elevator bits were boring as hell). I think saying the game looks amazing is a huge understatement, from the way the videos are shaping up it's looking to be my favourite game of all time, especially as the side missions and combat seem alot tighter than it's predecessor.

Also I have to ask the people who dislike the "edgy"/"darker"/"mentally unstable" companions, what about Jacob, Garrus and Tali? We know that Garrus and Tali are at least somewhat stable from the first game and Jacob seems to have his head screwed on right from what I've seen. Remember, this game represents Shepard desperately trying to recruit the most skilled/suicidal people in the galaxy to help him and the galaxy is a BIG place to find them. I think it makes sense, Shepard has to be careful not to lose himself whilst being forced to ally with utter nutcases. It's somewhat poetic when you think about it.

So yeah, bring on Friday 29th January! (You lucky Americans, grumble grumble)

I hated the Mako sections, apparently they've been completely removed.

Well said, I'm hoping there's going to be some Dragon-Age style inter-team drama.
