Mass Effect isn't about the guns, it's about the story and characters.
But the story and characters are also fairly bland.
Did we play the same game?

I don't see why people care for the sequel to a very mediocre game.
I'd go for the Gears of War series for your question.

Lancers will be the golden standard for bad ass weapon for a long time imho.
Gears nailed the gameplay, but the story was your standard huge-hulking-space-marine-fights-aliens stuff. It was a fun game, but nothing spectacular.

Mass Effect was about the experience, the story, and the journey more than it was gameplay. If you played it like a standard shooter, then yea I bet it was mediocre for you. You can't turn off your brain and play a BioWare game if you expect to enjoy it.

I don't even intend to buy it. Wasnt blown away by the first enough to warrant a sequel. If this is the game that the 'trendy' kids of our generation will buy, then I call dibs out.

The only thing I liked about ME1 was the story...which makes me want ME2

Though my Xbox is a brick so I'm gonna have to leave it til I can be bothered to get it fixed so never, and when I can rent the game

So true. To be honest, I thought the combat was quite enjoyable on the PC version but it's certainly not for everyone.

That said, while the Mass Effect trilogy is (so far at least) looking to be my favorite game of this generation, I doubt it will be the defining game.

I presume so. I played a game with a setting that was a generic milieu of low grade golden age Sci-Fi. Filled with disposable one-note characters who all seem to have been based on 3 cliches. The story was again lifted from low grade Sci-Fi filled with overly verbose linear dialog.

KANYE WEST- THE VOICE OF OUR GENERATION?
lol Sad but it is kind of true.

This means I have this weekend to beat the game. Ive owned it for over a year but never really was able to get into it like I wanted. But Id hate to not miss out on something potentially awesome.

This trailer does make me want to buy it so I best get started on ME1 ....

I dunno why everyone seems to forget about what they did with the Rachni Queen. Its one of the more potentially-interesting non-character choices in the game. I released her. I hope I run into her colony, friendly on non-friendly.
I personally want to see Balak return. I let him and his second-in-command go. There's no way they're allowed to deny me another encounter.
I'm pretty psyched. I have some doubts (the characters all seem to be Renegade for one... but the last one had mainly Paragon so it adds up), but they've been shut up by that amazing trailer and a little gameplay footage I've caught. It's BioWare, I don't think they're going to fuck this up. I preordered the Collector's Edition for PC and bought Faunts's M4 EP on iTunes, and hopefully tonight I'm gonna get a few side-quests in to beef up my Shepard's standings for the next game.

I don't know, but I don't want to watch that trailer. I want everything to surprise me when I get it. So few games actually warrant a pre-order from me, and this is one of them.

"trendy kids" ...ROFL!! I've been neither 'trendy' nor a 'kid' for at *least* 20 years...maybe 25, depending on your defintion. Strangely enough, there's plenty in Mass Effect (AND Mass Effect 2) for the old and unhip ... or is that broken hip? What was I saying?

Most of the issues people have had with the first one are fixed. Or at least, they attempted to fix them.

As I understand, planetary exploration has been totally changed, and the Mako has been completely cut.

The combat looks awesome, and you can map things from the wheel to buttons so you can use your own powers without a wheel if you want. I saw a video where the dude had his powers set to Y, so he didn't have to pull up the wheel in order to use them in combat.

My one complaint about the preview combat is looks ****alot**** like GoW. Like, alot:

Well that's what everyone is going to say when you have cover oriented 3rd person action. It's definitely not GoW though, I'm pretty sure GoW didn't have Biotics, hacks, or cryo ammo, or the Vanguard rush, that thing just looks sweet.

i actually think uncharted 2 is the game of our generation
This is NOT in ANY way ripping on your post. But as I have a PS3 and I HAVE NOT played Uncharted 2 yet, can you tell me what makes it great? Because honestly, I do not want to spend my money on something that I can tell I will not enjoy. This is an honest question, what makes Uncharted 2 Great????

*ahem* contributing to the thread now. First off, to all the haters, if you didn't like the first game, cool. To me, it was one of the better RPGs I have seen, and I am really excited about Mass Effect 2. But seriously, just saying you didn't like Mass Effect doesn't really answer the question posed. Now I am aware some of you who didn't like Mass Effect also go on to say what YOU think the GotD, or GotY, or Game of the Generation will be.

Now on the the thread. Honestly, I am LOVING how Mass Effect 2 is shaping up. Its combat looks improved, as do all of the aspects of the game. I would have to agree with whoever said that Darker and Grittier is NOT a bad thing, because it introduces a new dimension to the galaxy that was developed in ME.

I've enjoyed KotoR 1 and 2, Jade Empire etc. etc.
Mass Effect was way hyped up on the silly "sex" scene, and that hurt it from the start.
How can it be a game of a generation if it isn't that good on most fronts?
I mean, good story and such, but THE game of a generation should nail many if not all aspects of what makes an overal game experience. At least in 2015 we'll still be laughing about the absurdness of say a BFG 9000 or Lancer, but that one game with the silly hype and even sillier "sex" in it? Nope, not that one...

Mass Effect 2? I just got Mass Effect 1!
Get going, cupcake! We've got a galaxy to save!

But, seriously. Grats on going back and playing the first. I just finished my final playthrough on my level 60 Soldier, and I'm thinking of getting a bit further on my biotic just so I can hit the ground running in the second one.

On topic: I would love to see melee weapons, but with the way combat felt in the first one, I don't think they would flow too well with the engine. To me, that just seems like the proverbial icing on the cake, at least for a biotic player. But, I guess if I want to have a lightsaber, I may as well splurge on a copy of KOTOR 1/2.

It will definitely be my favorite game for a loooooong time.

Finally a good single player rpg/shooter that isn't Fallout 3!
