I will admit, my short trip trough the RPG world always involved the most brutal type of gameplay, archers when I was bored, so I can't say anything against such a game design decision.

But it seems like a kick to the nuts to the game design. "FUCK YOUR FANCY INTELLIGENT MECHANICS!"

Again, nothing wrong with it, but reminds me of many people on the Ecapist that claim they despise shooters and how the games they play are much superior and complex.
It's not that vanguards are easier or simpler (they're not), they're just more in your face. You have to pick your targets carefully or you'll end up in the middle of 5 or 6 enemies that are all out of range of your nova attack.

Charging into combat guns blazing is much harder than it sounds.

This game is much deeper than the average shooter. There's a lot more to do than just hide behind walls and pop out to shoot.

I played a Sentinel for my first playthrough in both 1 and 2, so not having my FemShep be a Sentinel in 3 would've been a crime. One thing I never leave the Normandy without though is the Scorpion pistol. I can seriously take out just about anything with it. Those brutes? Three shots, then dive out of the way as they explode on him, repeat till dead. Sniper rifle for anything with a head.

I take serious issue with the suggestion that any complaints about combat stem from "playing the game wrong." I played a Vanguard first time around, and found that as much as I love charge, I relied much more on my weapons than my powers (and Infiltrator probably would've been a better class for me as I would attempt to snipe just about everything).

I do have a serious issue when I get enemies coming up and forcing me out of cover in the middle of a heated firefight, because while I'm scrambling to keep a distance from a brute or some husks I'm getting torn apart by projectiles, but I can't simply stick my back against more cover because then the brute's going to get me. It's not so much because they're too difficult or badly designed, I simply hate fighting them--and banshees and phantoms, why the hell do those enemy types have a move that's pretty much an instant kill? I get being punished for letting them get too close but at least where phantoms are involved I'm not guaranteed to have seen them coming or have enough room to maneuver out of the way in time.

This is the best combat that has ever been in an RPG, bar none. I don't even understand how you could argue against that statement. Unless you just REALLY love turn-based shit or something.

The whole point of having enemies like the Husks, Brutes and Banshees is so you cant just sit in your %100 reliable cover and win every fight without taking a hit, I loved fights with them made me really have to think about how I am going to use all the cover and space in the area.

If you dont see a phantom coming you tunneled down your sight and probably shouldn't have, they have moves that instakill because they are melee and it takes a large blunder for them to get that close and swing.

I think combat in this game is rather excellent. I think you just need a little more practice.

Going Vanguard with just a shotgun is really addicting. Maxed out Charge and Nova for most enemies, and maxed out Pull and Slam for when I want to screw around with this one guy. I've seen Cerberus troops float up like 30 meters before crashing down with the speed of sound.

Also, Infiltrator with Black Widow.

It is quite alot of fun using singularity and push to fling hapless Cerberus goons off cliffs ledges and anything else that results in a splat, or using a biotic detonation to scatter their guts all over the walls.

Except that, especially the first time you encountered a phantom (in the elevator shaft) it was not only a very limited space, it was also dark, and I had never seen this enemy before. Not only that, they're fast and agile, and I find that my biggest issue isn't keeping them at a distance so much as getting a beat on them when they get that close. I'm trying to not back up into the other enemies, but also back out of range of their swords, and that can get messy. Especially with your butt pinned to cover when they start to close in (I found that turning to face and fire at an enemy that got around your cover, while still in that cover, was rather clumsy--but then it's been that way from the beginning).

I don't have as big an issue with brutes, as they're not that hard to dodge and they're only a problem if there's more than one of them. Banshees are a pain in the ass and absolutely my least favorite enemy to fight. Phantoms aren't as bad after the first time you fight them but their introduction could've been done a lot better--they're the kind of enemy you really don't want to be fighting in a small, dark area that gives you little room to maneuver. Maybe I did tunnel my vision, but then again not only was I caught off-guard by the phantom's tactics, I was already used to sitting back and sniping. Plus they don't always approach you from the front, and you only get the benefit of a radar if you hold down shift.

The trick with banshees is getting a really good anti-armor combo. Depending on your available skills, a warp+throw combination used repeatedly makes them laughable (took me awhile to get that one down though). Phantoms remain a bit harder simply because they block biotic moves every so often. AoEs are good at hitting them, especially if you aim at someone nearby (more likely in mp). Phantoms aren't that innately durable like banshees though.

Im loving the new combat, its not perfect but nothing is. I personally think the combat is better than it ever has been from the two previous games. I love how theres alot more strategy than the second game.

I am a sentienal(spelled horribly) and taste my blue balls of doom!!

Yeah, I can see that. But as I've said I relied a lot more on guns than powers--though I think that mostly comes from choosing the wrong class for my play style (vanguard instead of infiltrator, since I was sniping as much as I could despite not being a very good shot). Although the Geth shotgun is a hell of a hard-hitter against them, I've found. When I'm not panicking about them getting all up in my shit, that gun can take them down more easily than the other weapons I was carrying. And incendiary ammo on my assault rifle makes short work of a brute. Phantoms aren't that durable, but they are really mobile, so they're hard to snipe unless they've ended up in cover. I only have a problem with them if they manage to get behind me, and after the first couple of encounters with them I made sure they didn't one-hit-kill me again (which only ever happened once with a banshee, though I stand by my opinion that it should never happen at all).

I thought Mass Effect 2 had the worse combat of the series. ME1 was decent with the interesting loot system and upgrades, but ME2's was boring. Only bearable if you were using the Vanguard.

Which seriously, is pushing Mass Effect from a "good" game to an "excellent" game.

You know, they added a mode for people like you, it's called story mode. Can't cut it in the combat? Drop the difficulty to narrative, you'll be fine.

I love the purity of Vanguards. "Cover-based shooter? Fuck yo cover. This game is now a headbutt simulator."
I like how you say that while your Avatar is Samuel L. Motherfuckin' Jackson.

I... I think I get it now. Its cool to hate on massively successful franchises and dev studios. All except vALVE.
I don't jump on these bandwagons, though. So here it is. I don't agree at all. And not just to be contrary. I enjoy this game's combat much more than the previous 2. ME1 was a chore to get through. ME2 was easier. ME3 allows me to choose how I play... which is damn nice.

Yes you are. But never fear, you can redeem yourself. Get the claymore, and upgrade all your health points and melee damage, and then you can pretend to be a Vanguard. Only then shall you be accepted.
[sub][sub][sub]Loljks But seriously Vanguard rocks my socks off[/sub][/sub][/sub]
