Now, I'm sure most of you have heard that the squad size for ME3 will be smaller than ME2... Now this raises some questions for the squadmates in the past two games. For the roster to consider, not only do we want our favorites to be back, but Bioware has to make room for new characters, like James Sanders. I'd say that the squad size would be about seven to nine, so let's get this out of the way... Who definitely won't be back to ME3? For any reason at all, such their condition in the story (Thane's disease, Wrex's clan) or their low popularity (Jacob?).

Yeah, Thane'll probably be dead. Other than that, I can't say. I sure hope Kasumi's returning, and as a possible love interest to boot (but she is a DLC character so... probably not :/).
I'm sure Tali and Garrus will be back, and Liara is in a few screenshots, so I'm happy. Also, seeing as you're kind of fighting Cerberus in ME3, Jacob and Miranda probably won't be squadmates.
I can't really see Mordin, Thane, Jack, Samara, or Grunt returning, even if they survived the suicide mission, they weren't fleshed out as much and obviously weren't in ME1.
It's probably going to be 3 or 4 old squadmates and the same amount of new ones, and I don't care who as long as I get Liara back.

I bet Tali and Garrus will be party members, which would be good, but a part of me wants to meet a different quarian and different turian.

Tali, Garrus and Liara will be back. Tali and Liara confirmed, Garrus jsut because if they didn't have him the outrage would be huge.

I agree with Thane having an easy story way out of the game, so he's probably dead by ME3's opening credits.
Jacob was too much of a blank slate, and with bringing back Kaiden (if alive in player's data), he's become even more irrelevant.
The last I think will be gone are Grunt, Zaheed, and Samara/Morinth. Just by virtue of process of elimination. Both Liara and Kasumi had character arcs that had to be paid for, and thus would be a paid move to toss them out now. Tali and Garrus have the largest character fan bases of the game (and plenty of demented pornography, which means a lot of odd people will have a grudge against Bioware should they restrict their favorite art subjects.) Plus, Garrus was revealed to be in the game in a supplemental developer commentary, in which Tali was mentioned as well.
I would think Mordin was far too popular on the developer's side (i.e. Gilbert and Sullivan performance) to let go. Although with his age they may relegate him to an NPC aboard Shepard's vessel rather than squadmate. Miranda....I honestly have no idea. She was such a big component of the 'Mass Effect 2' storyline, but she also was the one most complete at the game's completion. That's the only one up in the air for me.

Grunt definitely won't. Wrex will. A friend who has been stalking the game said that the rest of the old team will be back except the one you sent to die. Also, I've heard there are no new romances. Sad, since that means my Shepard is doomed to die alone, bitter and unloved.
