Mass Effect 3 : Your Theories

With Mass Effect 3 hopefully coming to stores soon, I am curious as to what my fellow Escapists think will happen in it. You all saw the swarm of Reapers coming towards civilized space, how many there were. But then again, if you think about it, they are coming all the way from dark space. My theory is that Shepard and his bros will be put in Cryo until the Reapers start getting closer.

What are your thoughts?

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I think that might have just been to show that they are still out there but Im sure that in me3 we will be dealing with those reapers and Im pretty sure that something stupid will happen to make us win, you know like the usual "we have no hope, but oh wait, someone put a kill all of them button over here, quick press it, yay we win forever, time for an orgy"

I too think there will likely be a heavy dose of deus ex machina, but I can't really imagine them dealing with the reaper fleet any other way. There has to be some common weakness that the turian/asari/human fleets can exploit, though if the ending of ME1 is any indication (where Sovereign fucks up pretty much everything he wants), it won't be all that simple.

That's what I think the plot of ME3 will include. Shepard trying to round up the races to stand against the Reapers (Rachni, Krogan, Asari, Turian, Geth, Quarian, etc.), as well as the search for a weakness to exploit.

Right... it'll either be out late next year or start to mid 2012. Games do take a while to make.

Umm.... you seem to be confusing Bioware with George Lucas.

Personally... since the Reapers are still in dark space, I'm betting they have a back-up way into the galaxy... just in case the Citadel stopped working. Meanwhile, in an attempt to prevent the races of the galaxy from completely uniting against them, the Reapers activate some sleeper agents that either Sovereign or Saren set up... there... that should cover the first half of the game. The last half could be interspersed with either space combat sim or rts elements to stand in for the actual war against the reapers. Whatever resources you have available at this point depend on which and how many races you managed to unite under your banner.

well according to the first game they should still be in hibernation since sovereign coulnt send the message to awaken them, I guess if they do it where the council manages to catch them mostly asleep and only a handful are able to wake up and you have to fight them, that could work pretty well

Human scientists (it'll be human, count on it) find a way to communicate with the keepers, and de-activate their programming that keeps them mindless. As the original constructors of Mass Relay tech (who the reapers stole it from when they first arrived, as the Reapers are tech-thieves) they were used to keep it going. The citadel BEING a giant mass relay is used to hurl shepard and the normandy AT the reapers with some Deus Ex Machina like object that can only be recovered/constructed after Shepard visits 4 worlds that contain the unobtanium needed. Shepard detonates macguffin and dies, the Reapers go SCREEEEEEEEEE (for like 10 minutes, it'll be like when the T-1000 dies in terminator 2, or when you kill The Beast in Homeworld Cataclysm) and then it'll fade to black with a speech (Captain Anderson will say it) about how kickass Shepard was.

This is definitely what will happen. No doubt.

i doubt that bioware will try to put in an rts element into the game because 1, its not their strong point, and 2, a lot of people play me on consoles which as a rule of thumb dont mix well with the rts format.

Id put money on shepard and co boarding harbinger and bringing it down from the inside or something similar, or possibly an attemp and sort of a space flight sim though thats unlikely.

My guess? The Geth fleet saves the day. According to Mass Effect codex the Heretic Geth fleet (roughly 1000 ships or so seems like a decent guess of their fleet size seeing as how they only use dropships and cruisers) was only about %5 of the total Geth military strength. That being said the Quarian Migrant fleet would get royally fucked up if they tried to re-invade Geth territory and it might just be enough turn the tide against the reaper fleet. Sovereign did manage to do some serious damage to the human fifth fleet that responded but he was eventually destroyed and if you can manage to unite the Geth, Turians, Asari, Salarians, Rachni, Quarians, Batarians, Krogan, and Alliance then you would stand a good chance of bringing down the reaper fleet. We might actually see something similar to Dragon Age where a good portion of the story is spent uniting the intelligent races of the Galaxy for a climactic final battle with the reapers. Something that seems like it would be easier if you chose the Paragon options.

Mass effect 3....will be an automatic hit and phrased forever. But of course I'll find it boring and stupid and give it a bad review. (being realistic here)

My quick thoughts on this.

- Good guys win unless you made some horrible choices in all three games and have a diminished fleet toward the end of 3.

- I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest all the reapers will be severely damaged/destroyed but the elusive man will capture at least one and become it's slave

- Joker will die. So will Sheppard.

- The Citadel will probably explode too.

- The Geth and Quarians will now be friends.

- There'll probably be an alternative ending for Sheppard where he can join the Reapers and become controlled by them.

Edit: Unlikely but maybe the relay will be destroyed before the Reapers can reach civilized space (at least in this game) and there'll be a fourth Mass Effect, possibly with a different generation of characters.

Edit 2: Someone else just made me think of this but probably they'll send the fleet out into dark space to confront the threat head on.

George Lucas's writing skill seems to depend on the outcome of a dart toss.

Bioware consistently writes well. (remember KOTOR? It was easily better than most of the actual Star Wars movies)

Shit happens, Commander Sheppard wins because dark endings for video game where everyone gets killed are absolutely unacceptable and should be raped the same way all faerie tales were.

Ahem.

Although seriously, I'm so totally predicting that Reapers are going to die and Sheppard may or may not survive to the end.

I hope s/he doesn't.

Either way, the Reapers are the good guys. Didn't you get the memo? They're, like, as justified to do what they do as anyone else. The whole "indoctrination" business is just political malarkey created by some conspiracy.

As technically, intellectually, and physically superior beings that have managed to survive for so long with their ingenious plan, they're absolutely deserving to survive.

Also, some generic Deus Ex Machina self-sacrifice thing seems probable. That's how most of this type of conflicts get solved.

Liara/Tali/Ash/Jack/Miranda/Kelly(mix and match any 2) will get in an awesome fight over Shepard, were the paragon choice would be to break it up, and the renegade choice would be to take pictures for joker!
