I'm not so sure it would work. I mean on one hand it would mean I could finally fullfill my dream of playing as a Krogan but on the other hand the combat isn't really at the stage that would work for competative gameplay.
It's an interesting thought, but I don't think it would work. Besides I've seen far too many story based games fall over when they try and add multiplayer to the mix. This isn't going to happen to my Mass Effect.

Short of co-operative play there's really not much appeal to be had of multiplayer with this franchise.

I think should be kept single-player...but, I will hold judgement until I can see what they would do with it

Yes. as long as there's Co-Op, I love the idea of Co-Op in RPGs. Blasted Bioware, forcing me to betray Bethesda like this!

Unless the multiplayer involves talking to another player to see who can hold out the longest without throwing a chair at the other, I'm not interested.

No offense to anyone here, but what's with all the insta-whining? They just announced that they'll have multiplayer, they haven't described what form it will be in, if it'll just be DLC, a stand-alone expansion, or even part of a full game. We know NOTHING about it besides that there will be multiplayer. Bioware isn't a company that surrenders story for anything, I don't think that multiplayer will instantly taint the rest of the game. This is not the end of Mass Effect's quality or its surrender to mainstream multiplayer, it's just a company trying something different.

I'm a firm believer in giving new ideas a chance, I never really thought of Mass Effect as multiplayer but I'll keep an open mind. Really, it's far better to wait and see what it's actually like, rather then instantly pass it off as the destruction of a franchise.

Multiplayer doesn't mean versus.

I've always thought co-op in ME would be awesome, considering you're already a squad of three.
I've always thought that too, the AI for your squadmates is never really that good, it would be pretty cool if your friends could jump into the other characters and play along with you. I don't know how they'd handle conversations, but still, it's a really interesting idea.

If they can come up with a way that isn't death match, then count me in. I like the idea of Spec Ops ME. I hope that if they do it, they will put a lot of attention into it.

Why do all developers have a Montreal department? WHY?
Montreal's pretty much the Canadian center for art and culture, there's a lot of talent in the area for technical fields as well. Funny enough it's probably also the most corrupt city in Canada, but I digress.

I was actually just thinking that a Mass Effect MMO might be viable. After all, there's a incredibly detailed world (nay, universe) already in place to build from--and even a handful of locations such as the Citadel, Noveria, Omega, Nos Astros, and the rest could provide a satisfyingly diverse setting.

However, if this is instead a hint for a Mass Effect deathmatch-style multiplayer, then I'll lose a little bit of faith in BioWare (which will quickly be regained by awesome storytelling, I'm sure). I just don't see the ME gameplay translating to an arena-style multiplayer game particularly well--but I suppose that BioWare would know better than to shoehorn in a useless and uninteresting multiplayer mode... right?

In effect, I'd think that a Mass Effect MMO could be worthwhile, but ME3 shouldn't have multiplayer content, unless BioWare does something to really surprise me--which they probably will.

The only issue I can see is: How will pause-and-play work when you can't pause? We should definitely keep an eye out to see what type of multiplayer gameplay Mass Effect could bring us in the future, whether it be in Mass Effect 3 or something unannounced.
I have some others issues personally
How NPC relations works if you have a buddy... what the secound players will during discutions?

Holy crap you bunch of cryingneckbeardsgamers and your fear of new things. God forbid bioware create a separate studio for work on a multiplayer aspect perhaps adding more depth and creativity and longer playing time. If you don't like it don't play it. Not to mention we have 0 detail of what a MP mode would entail...

I love my hobby but it is one of the most childish, bitchiest, complainingest group of people anywhere

MP is the poison to SP. Most games that boast a decent MP put the SP on the back burner giving us a shitty story. Mass Effect is an RPG, focus on the story and single player pleaseee...no one is begging for MP.

side not: Watch AC: Brotherhood be shit because of the devs focusing too much on the new MP. I'm calling it!

NO NONONONONNONONONONO unless your making an mmo of it, which in the case of mass effect might work really well, it should stay the hell away from multiplayer
Hmm.. I don't know.

the only Multiplayer in Mass Effect I could think of is perhaps 3-way co-op, 1 dude playing as Shepard while 2 others play as squadmates.

And if that's the case, then if it means I can finally play as a non-human character in the Mass Effect uinverse, I'm all over it, especially if it's a krogan squadmate.

Ugh, I love Mass Effect, but it's shooting mechanics are nowhere near good enough to work as a multiplayer game, just... just, no.
I doubt it means online PvP matches. Online co-op, however, would be plausable.
Not only plausible, but awesome.
Bioware isn't going to sacrifice story for multiplayer. They aren't that kind of company.
So everyone can stop whining about something we have barely info about.

Secondly if they did have a multiplayer component, I would love to see something like MW2's Spec ops. Disconnected from the main game, yet in similar locations. Just little, fun, objective based co-op missions. Sign me up! Running around with friends all firing guns, biotics, and tech powers? IT's be like Mass Effect Volleyball there would be so much setting up going on: "Hit 'em with a pull field and I'll throw 'em!
Sweet. Sign me up.
I'm ok with NOT being the leader, NOT being Shepard, if I can have real people playing with me. In a co-op setting, that would be awesome!

It could work, but just make it a death match kind of thing maybe?

Leave the campaign alone.

I love how everyone automatically assumes that simply because BioWare is adding a multiplayer component to a Mass Effect game, it's going to be bad. In all honesty, they might add a cooperative mode similar to the one found in Splinter Cell Conviction. A seperate campaign that relates to the single player experience.

I also like how everyone assumes that multiplayer means "deathmatch and versus". Several people have already pointed out how BioWare has a pretty good track record with multiplayer games, and they have some intriguing technology in development for SW:TOR that could be easily translated to ME.

Frankly, IF and this is a big IF given that BioWare has already stated that the Mass Effect trilogy is Shepard's story, IF the multiplayer component involves a cooperative campaign through the single player mode, they may have players who aren't Shepard choose one of the surviving team members from ME2 or play a brand new character. Who wouldn't love to actually see your squadmates fight intelligently for once? Plus, think about how awesome it would be if during a conversation, one of them butted in. It would be infinitely more dynamic, and it would add to the replay value.

While that isn't likely to happen, I still think they'll have a seperate COOP experience focusing on different characters. Or, maybe even familiar characters sans Shepard. Maybe it would be set during the two years between the first two games? Hell, maybe it'll be set after the third game! We don't know. We don't even know that it's going to be in Mass Effect 3.

All we know is that it's happening.

No! NONONONONO! They should MUST never do this! It is a horrible idea. Don't we already have enough online space shooters? Will they call the game Gears Effect 3 or something? Not even co-op (I HATE playing the story mode with others).

Can I just point out that nowhere has it been said that the game play in Mass Effect games will remain the same? The first trilogy might only be single player, but what's to stop them changing the game play style in, say, Mass Effect: Lol Sequel Series to cater for a multiplayer? Halo went through a genre change for Halo Wars, just as an example.

Yeah, it might suck, but there's no proof or rule that this game will have to be about Shepard and his crew. For all we know, it could be Mass Effect: Deathmatch, in which you can choose your race and/or class, and all that. A bit like Enemy Territory, I guess.
