ANOTHER "original" story that ruins an existing mythos?! Fuck you, whoever is making that piece of shit film. Snobs like you already ruined Sands of Time, Silent Hill, and Hitman. DIAF.
It has nothing to with the story's being original. It's purely bad writing.

I can see something...

It's hazy, I can't quite make it out, I... I think the fail is in such huge quantities, that its physical form is unascertainable by the human eye.

(The Seth Green/Joker issue, not the gender issue)
Every post I've seen out of you has been pure gold. I salute you sir! :)

OT: There is SO MUCH that could be done instead of a Mass Effect movie that centres on Shepard. I'd prefer to see a Blasto the Jellyfish movie, or indeed one that focuses on the origin story of one of the characters. I'm thinking Thane. There's so much background that can be used to make a masterpiece of a film that'll satisfy the fans no end. I don't see why you'd crap all over Commander Shepard's story to do it.
Thanks :D

I try.

And I agree, Thane's story could be made into a brillaint film. Maybe not a theater release, but certainly an animated or CGI release to DVD/Blu-Ray.

-It's not going to be the proper story, not even based on it.
-Joker is not played by the same guy.

Wasnt going to watch it anyway!

It's both. Silent Hill 1 (the game) is very, very badly written, yet its story is amazing. If Roger Avary and Christophe Gans had just adapted this story (which, you know, adaptation is all about) in their film, it would have been the best horror movie in over a decade. What they ended up with was decent at its best (i.e. most of the first half) and horrible at its worst (i.e. the second half and every single Sean Bean scene). The bad writing is just a product of the shit story. I mean, the same guy did write Pulp Fiction... he's not exactly the worst writer in the world.

Wait... so it's not based on the plot of the games?

Oh god, they're going to try making it a prequel, aren't they?

Please have this shut down now. And put someone who knows what they're doing on the project.

I swore the movie was going to be about the First Contact War. Much easier to base a great story around, we get to see more of the other races, and everyone won't be up in arms over the whole "canon Shepard" thing.

I can't watch a movie about Shepard. That's the whole point of the videogame.
It's just going to be so....awkward...

Imagine it. You're watching the new Mass Effect movie, and Shep has a conversation. Suddenly the movie freezes.

"Text what YOU think Shepard should say to this number! Vote now!"

I wouldn't watch it in cinema unless it was femShep. I know that is absolutely ridiculous, but I just don't like male Shepard at all. As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to Mass Effect, he is not the real Commander Shepard. I know I'm one of the 20%, and yes, I am a very dedicated femShepper.

Then again, I wouldn't watch this anyway, at least until it was a bargain DVD, and even then I'd seriously consider just watching it at a friend's house or something. I mean, it's just a phenomenally stupid idea. Taking a game with 40 plus hours of gameplay (if you do all the sidequests, spend a lot of time levelling, explore all the hidden content etc) and then condense it into a 2-3 hour movie?

And what's the way they decide to do this? By not actually using the plot of the game, but making up a new one. Right. That's like making Resident Evil a movie, but putting in a new character solely because the story of the Resident Evil games is... oh wait, they did that, and it sucked. Or like adapting Tomb Raider, but instead of using a story from any of the five games (at the time) or the comics, making up your own completely new one that forces you to rewrite the main character's basest personality and motivatio... oh wait, they already did that, and it sucked. Hard

It does often seem like there's only two options, and both of them are always failures. Rewrite the story so it fits more into a non-interactive medium, in which case the fans hate it because it's nothing like the story they know (see also Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within) or trying to make it very much like the medium the original comes from, which still stumbles over the whole non-interactive thing, which means that the fans don't like it because frankly they already have a good video game to play (See Final Fantasy: Advent Children) and no one else likes it because the only people who get to direct videogame adaptions are usually directors who are just paying their way (see, everything Uwe Boll's ever done)

Seriously, videogame movies are worse than comic book movies, and comic book movies still have Batman and Robin to atone for. (and Barb Wire, and Superman IV, and Scott Pilgrim)

The only way this could get worse is if they give it a dumb subtitle, like MASS EFFECT: Shep-ARRDER!

...

What?

Well this is going to suck.

Seriously, no Seth green? And male Shepard? Now I'm not going to claim to be a massive PR merchant here, but wouldn't having a femshep attract a lot of teenage guys to the movie. Having a extremely hot chick, who is also a total badass as the main character is going to sell a load more tickets than one with a boring dude who looks like a shaved gorilla, and you never know, they could do Femshep well, and actually make a strong female character..... yeah, not much hope there. Femshep will probably have a fan-service shower scene just for the hell of it.

And Joker will loose most of his geek-cred, character and humour if you give it to anyone but Seth Green.

Oh, and the if Yvonne Strahovki turns up as Miranda wearing the uniform she does in the game, I'm sold, no matter how shit the movie is.
Female badass only tests well with the teenage boy demographic if she wears skin tight shit and is fast and agile with bladed weapons or some other ineffective but attractive weapon. Fem Shep is dirty harry badass, uses good weaponry, doesn't dress skimpy and doesn't have much in the way of options for looking more feminine if it costs her military effectiveness.

Movie will suck

While I do think that it's utter bull that Seth Green won't be part of the film, the other decisions do not surprise me at all. Video game fans have a hard time accepting that movie adaptations are not made for them, but for a broader viewing audience. The only time a game-based movie has something from a game in it as a 'wink to the players', it's typically due to a lack of originality rather than fan service. Game-based movies are not homage to their origins, they are simply an idea box that sits right next to the super-hero box.

Prince of Persia was okay, so was Silent Hill, but you have to enjoy the movies for what they are. I simply will not see Mass Effect or Uncharted. Uncharted mostly due to Nathan Fillion's lack of involvement.

Well a film incarnation of Mass Effect was inexorably going to be a failure anyway, but that really is a seriously stupid casting decision. I mean 2 hours really insn't enough time to flesh out the depth of the Mass Effect universe and loses the key strength of leaving the degree of exposition about everything around them down to the player's volition. There is no way a film version can possibly have the same depth and emotional resonance, so I really hope this thing falls through; we really don't need something to taint the name of the series like the shit they're doing with Silent Hill.
i feel as though they'll over simplyfiy the story then waste lords knows how much money on the CGI for movie for what ever reason why i still feel asthough this "might" have a chance at being good(or atleast not god awful). yes every Mass effect fan has their veiw of shepard with that being said how ever they could try to better explain what happend between games 1 and 2. Or try to fill in what sheperad was like before he became a spectre/hero of the galaxy ( yes that would mean a prequel). I guess their only to generate good will will be if they atleast keep the normandy around(if they don't then i'll put this on shitty movie list)

In my opinion, the best plot for a Mass Effect movie would have nothing to do with Shepard, though he'd be mentioned in passing.

I'd personally prefer to see the story of Garrus' Omega Squad, how they formed, what drove him from the Citadel and just what went wrong and left him fighting off 3 merc groups as a last stand.

Uuuugh... why couldn't they make a movie IN the ME universe, but not with Sheppard? Why they do that?
Also: They can't have Joker without Seth Greene. He IS Joker.

There is no femshep because it is not a real character, I think having femshep would turn a lot of people off the movie. Whining about nothing, be happy you are getting a movie at all.

I can't speak for anyone else, but while I usually play as femshep, having manshep star in the movie won't 'alienate me'. Having a preference doesn't mean you have to hate everything else. I prefer brunettes but I'd date a blonde if she was nice.

Just a theory, but perhaps, like the Zelda, Metroid, and Halo movies, this is going to disappear into development hell never to see the light of day.
