There really isn't enough information about the Reapers to make a proper educated opinion on what they may be doing in there. Perhaps they've been in there mere moments, and time simply runs at a much slower rate within the void, or they travel to alternate timelines and attempt the same thing there, it could be dozens of other possible explanations, all within the realms of logic and science.

They resolve which came first....the chicken or the egg....
The chicken and the egg has been resolved. It was the chicken. The proteins required for forming a functioning egg shell can only be produced by being laid by a chicken. :p

... Yay reaper scientists?
...That makes no sense whatsoever. Clearly it was the egg in this pointless scenario that came 'first'

Wherein the egg is implied to be whatever form of reproductive method used upon the bridge from a previous species and what we might call chickens now. Given that avian ancestors were saurian, this more than likely leaves us with an egg.

That said, if you're going to take the chicken as a placeholder as well, then it came 'first'. As primordial life duplicated via binary fission, before eggs ever came around.
Do I have to start a poll for this argument?

They see who can NYAN the longest. I believe this is the one area where they can't beat us...

Clearly Nyan cat is a cat reaper. The other reapers try not to talk about it...

Joker looks out of the Normandy's cockpit into space.
'Um Commander'
*Nyan Cat streams across the Hawking ETA a flurry of rainbows trailing behind it. A comm channel opens and sounds of nyanning come through*
'Something wrong Joker'
'No...nevermind' :3

Reaper 1: "How about be invade the Milky Way again and wipe out all sentient life?'
Reaper 2: "Again? Oh well, not like there's anything else to do."
THAT takes them 50.000 years to get out?!

Take your time, reapers. Take your time.

I'm figuring that they invade other galaxies btw. The Mass Effect games all play inside the Milky Way, not any other galaxy. With their technologies, I figured that they could just as well get to other galaxies. Or at least a part of the way, take another Mass Effect Relay with them, align it with another galaxy, set it on its max distance and off you go.

They probably attack other galaxies while their away, hibernating for a couple hundred years between to recharge shields and wait for the signal from each galaxy, Sovereign DID sound pretty pissed that he had to stay behind in ME1, maybe because he's gonna miss out on 50,000 years worth of reaping and upgrades, hell, the reason why He built the Reapers up to be this unstoppable force was because he expected therir numbers to reach the billions in that space of time and be indestructible(Though that was probably speculation on his part, also the reason I suspect why he mobilized a Geth army and attempted to rediscover Ilos instead of simply re-engineering the Keepers and then Plowing through the Citidel Armada was because Sovereign might have thought rediscovering a Mass Relay would lessen his chances of drawing the short straw during the next cycle) /rant.

Real answer given in the game? The vast majority of them just sleep. Some of them are more active and scour the galaxy, keeping tabs on the various civilizations, learning about their strengths/weaknesses, enslaving agents and making sure that organics don't grow too powerful. Some might be involved with managing various "slave" races like the Collectors. But the game explicitly says that the vast majority of them simply go to deep space and enter a hibernation mode to conserve energy and prevent them from being accidentally discovered. So, yeah, they merely wait and rest up for the next harvest.

Again, that might seem confusing: why do they do this? What purpose IS there to their existence if ALL THEY DO is kill, go back to sleep, wake up, kill, go back to sleep, wake up, kill ad infinitum? Well, the Reapers say that their true purpose is apparently "beyond" the understanding of Organic life forms. ME2 hints that part of the harvest is to reproduce and replace lost reapers (every once in a while one of them does die). But until ME3, we'll don't know why they seem to be content to exist in a seemingly pointless cycle of "Kill, sleep, kill, sleep, kill some more, then sleep some more". It's entirely possible that they wait for organic civilization to grow, assess new species, technologies, cultures, and then before they can grow too powerful, wipe out the ones they don't like and forcibly incorporate the ones they do like.
