I've tried many times to get into Mass Effect but have yet to succeed. I find it too slow and quite overwhelming when you haven't played for so long. Its a bit of a shame as i do love Bioware, hopefully Dragon Age will keep me satisfied.

Also having the common reload button for most shooters being mapped by default as the grenade button IS FUCKING ANNOYING!

Out of curiosity, what are you playing the game on? If 360, I have yet to find a shooter that uses the back button at all, if not to check scores. I don't know the keys for the PC.

PC Version, R is very common for reload in most shooters.

Was quite funny when i was hammering it when i started playing again and didn't realize that my rifle had overheated.

All of you that say combat was secondary are on crack. The combat felt really tight and a lot of fun. I played as an infiltrator and sniping was a blast. Halo combat sucks hardcore - it feels so plastic. And this is coming from someone who is a Quake3 and UT1 vet and was 2nd 2 seasons in a row on Quake 2 in the US on OLN Ladders.

Oh, I feel your pain then. R is grenade, that's wierd.

I didn't care TOO much for Mass Effect, just enough to see it to the end. It's a solid 4/5 for me, but it doesen't beat KOTOR by any means.
What I liked is (Like Sanity said, just word-terrorist that he is :D) it's an Opera, in space. The choices are fun and offer a good range of personalities as a result of them. You can literally play it however you want.

Oh and OP gets a FAIL for comparing anything to HALO - the most overrated game of all time that is only popular in the US because people here love to follow trends.

I didn't really like it, I mean the dialog was okay but the gameplay itself was so lackluster.. Plus there were often gamebreaking bugs for me, stuff like guns not recharging from overheat and me clipping into the ground while being knocked out. Worst thing is that when you are knocked out literally any object in your way can kill you, if another body does as much as drop an arm on you youre dead!

Add uninteresting planets and at best a meh story and I still dont see whats there to like..

If you're focusing on the combat, you're missing a lot of the point. The storytelling of Mass Effect is where it stands out from almost all other games. Also, how is the combat Halo-like? I don't remember biotic abilities and guns that can shoot freezing/toxic/incendiary bullets in Halo...
I liked mass effect, but I have to be honest - those effects really just amounted to little more than "my gun hurts more" which is hardly a game changer.

So i've brought Mass Effect and i've loaded it up and had a quick play. It seems like a Halo wannabe in the shooter front but I thought it was meant to be an RPG style game?

I've started in a spaceship, created my character, gone onto a planet and i've just been killing things. Seems very similar to Halo just with character creation. Am I missing something or is there more to come and i should play more...?
Similar to Halo how exactly?

The third person view?

The zoom function on the guns?

The RPG stats building?

The dialogue sequences which are as much a focus as the shooting?

The option to control your squad?

Did you actually play Mass Effect at all?

Like Halo? I hope that is a joke.

Honestly, don't play a game for 10 minutes, and then come crying because you skipped all of the dialogue, and are not far enough to get into the real gameplay. The strong point of Mass Effect is its story and dialogue options, if you'd rather skip that and miss out on one of the best games I've ever played, then by all means do that.

That's just how the combat is...at face value, but weapon-mods, biotic/tech powers, and cover all factor into something that has distinct RPG tendencies. Also, I suspect you haven't even finished Eden Prime yet, in which case, wait until the Citadel; it's awesome and there are a bunch of primarily dialogue-oriented side-quests to do. The story is deep and epic, and the combat, I hope, will grow on you, as it did for me.
Ah, I see you're here already. I don't have much to add, except one thing: this game gets better as it goes on. The first act is decent (better because Nihlus is in it), the second act is great, and the third act is phenomenal.

I've seen Mass Effect recommended highly in many places and as I'm currently RPG starved I've considered getting it. From this thread I can see it ticks the boxes, deep storyline, good writing, big world to explore, many choices and different customisation; good combat.

Can someone please explain quickly how each class plays and what its powers actually do, from reading reviews and the like most are very vague with it.

I didn't like mass effect, sure the graphics were good and there is and epic story but the combat was boring and I just wanted some fast paced action.
Then why in the name of Thor did you buy an RPG?
I love other rpgs like oblivion and fallout 3, jade empire isn't a bad game either, I just didn't like mass effect

Mass Effect is an RPG first, and shooter second. Why is good? Because it delivers a remarably deep narrative that isn't seen too much anymore. I mean all those lines are spoken, there is no text to read in a conversation. Play it and beat it, then form an opinion. Personally, it's my favorite game. If the combat is that big of a drawback, the second one features a more fleshed out combat system than its predecesser.
