At $10(About £5-£6 over here) is Mass Effect worth it?... Why you even asking, any game at £5 is good never mind a top bioware game like Mass Effect. Okay seriously, that is a good find, it's a good game... I'm not sure how it plays on the PC I own the 360 version but I've heard the PC doesn't suffer from the delayed render issues. The game though is on my top ten list, not at the top... I think it's marked at around 8 on my list but it's on there. There's a good character creator at the beginning, you get to pick your origin and it effects the game... not to a large extent but you'll get some different dialogue maybe a conversation or two and at the most a side quest depending on what you pick (This one part as been heavily expanded upon in Biowares new game Dragon Age:Origins).
Then you get to shape your person up using a cool little face tweaker that with a bit of practice and creativity you can create a really cool looking character. Finally you get to pick a class this system isn't as good as most... there's only 3 main classes and the rest are just like mixes of the three classes... you get your Warrior type who takes the most damage and can is an expert with all the weapons, you get your ... Jedi... who uses the force to throw people and create barriers... not the most hard class and can be a little hard to play at first but when you get further into the game and you've unlocked or greatly improved upon your force powers then you can become powerful. Finally you get your... I don't know what I can compare this one to... I guess it's a caster but better at taking down electronics then anything else... sadly I've never got around to testing this one out... give it a go and tell me how you found it.
The story is the highlight along with the speech system... there's some genuine good voice acting here and some very interesting dialogue, the people you meet have some interesting things to say but the highlight of this is your crew... as you go about doing more missions talking to you crew can leads to some interesting conversations concerning who they are.. there past.. there thoughts ect, This give's your crew a really good amount of characterisation to them and adds chemistry to the game. The problem though with the game is probably the clunky combat and the back tracking... the tracking back and forth can get a little tedious after a while.
There's a good amount of planets in this game and some you can land on but they define the meaning of "Dead Space" these planets are deserted and there's nothing much down there besides a few bad guys here and there and gold mines/gas pods ect. You do some times get to meet a very interesting creature on them planets the Thresher Maw, this creature greatly ressembles a Bobbit Worm (look it up) but doesn't live under water, the fights with these things can get fun and the first time you encounter one can be scary as these things look like some thing out of dune. While exploring these little planets you do get a few side quests here and there although the best by far is a Starship Troopers/ Aliens rip off side quest, it's not part of the main quest and you probably wont find it unless you look for it or search every planet (like I did) and stubble across it.
Overall the game is good... 8/10 in my books, it's not perfect.. it has it's faults but it's one to look at and for $10 it's a must buy.
