I got up this morning and saw this article on CNN. http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/19/world/europe/norway-breivik-trial/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

I am just sick and tired of people saying that games make people violent and now we got this but job who is just giving them more fuel to the fire. So what do you all think? How bad do you think this will hurt gaming? Will they even consider it valid since he seems crazy?

If he trained on Modern Warfare 2, then he must have been annoyed that he didn't get a Tactical Nuke after the first 25.

Anyway, this'll just be more fuel to the fire of the people who keep on going "Video games are bad". However, they were going to find that fuel one way or another anyway.

However, if I ever go on a killing spree I'm going to blame it on something like pop music or reality TV, just to see if the same sort of thing happens to those topics as it does to video games (highly unlikely)

Off-topic: I don't suppose anybody knows why whenever I put in a couple of apostrophes or quotation marks, it changes everything between them into token#0 or something along those lines?

This is old news, but it's on CNN's front page right now, because the killer brought it back up. I'm sure that he's quite aware that by bringing it up, his statement will get more attention and that he will get more attention.

The problem is that video games still hold a lot of mystique for people who don't understand them. As do guns. So, add these two things that have plenty of mystique and *BAM* it's a perfect storm of fear.

I talked to a relative a while ago about how he was worried that kids were learning how to use and fire guns through all of the video games they were playing. But if you know the first thing about video games and guns, you'd know that's ridiculous. The two are completely different. In fact, playing video games can often hurt first-timers in terms of gun use because of a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings.

Hahaha, this reminds me of that joke "Where did you learn to drive?" - "Grand Theft Auto".

It's almost too silly to be true.

oh this breivik asshole again? come on scandinavians give this dog the blood eagle and toss his body into the sea, that the kraken may gnaw on his bones.

guffaw guffaw! the joke is on the courts for this man does not recognize their authority! so obviously he wins (pretending anyone wants to join your idiot crusade while in prison is a total win).

Modern Warfare 2? Come on. Out of all military shooters he chose the most unrealistic one. [sarcasm]He could have killed at least another 20 people if he played America's Army.[/sarcasm]

He's obviously trying to appear insane. That's his only defense. His choice is prison or mental institute. He knows that.

This won't hurt gaming in any way. Out of millions of CoD players, one adult mass murderer who just so happens to be one of the millions of players doesn't prove anything. Besides, he planned that for several years. Does he have a TV? Millions of people watch TV every day, just like millions of people play violent video games every day.

He's got a point. After listening to the voice chatter in the average MW2 game and after joining a few PUGs in WoW I was usually left with an overwhelming desire to kill a lot of people as well.

Didn't he say he trained using WoW? That alone is enough to clinch him the Insanity plea - All WoW trains you for is pressing keyboard buttons.

I had my Guild Wars 2 Pre-Purchase box arrive at my front door today, so I thought I'd give it a few swings to warm it up. How do you guys brandish these game-boxes for maximum impact? Like do you hold in two hands and swing with the flat edge to bludgeon noses, or grasp in one hand like a dagger? Should I be sharpening the corner up a bit? I don't think it'd do much damage as it stands, I mean it might cause a few bruises or something, am I doing it wrong? It's hard to believe these are more dangerous than guns...

Oh well, it doesn't matter really. There will be a bit of talk about how 'bad video games are for the kids', then people will forget about it and it will blow over. Popular culture is blamed for everything. No one still blames John Lennon's death on 'The catcher in the rye', the same thing will happen now.

I remember that terrorists used WoW to exercise tactics and methods to attack the USA. Or something like that. I don't remember who said it but it must be true.

So, would that mean that he was also a potential terrorist for training in WoW?

So... in other words pretty much every job out there nowadays? Blizzard really is doing the world a service!

I just have this image of some suicide bomber going up to Osama bin Laden and saying "Yeah, about that WoW subscription I charged to the company... it's for training!".

I wonder if anyone involved in the trial actually took the time out to play MW2. I doubt anyone has, considering the article has to clarify what kind of game it is. MW2 is probably one of the worst ways to train for a shooting scenario. You have unrealistic abilities from the perks, the guns (most likely) handle quite differently from real life, and you have REGENERATING HEALTH. If anything, he's better off using America's Army.

I'm also wondering why the article bothered to mention the fact that he played WoW. That has absolutely no relevance to this situation, no matter what the circumstance.

Just when you think the stigma of gaming is starting to disappear, something like this shows up in the news. Freaking media.
