Ok, I'm talking about games that were MAJORLY overrated in your opinion. The games that were amazingly hyped and given amazing reviews you don't think they deserved.

Sorry if this has been done before, I searched it but couldn't find anything.

Please don't lynch me with angry comments again...

GTA 4.

It's graphics are really cool, but it's just a fucking game, people!

I was kinda disappointed with Halo 2. It was ok, but it didn't live up to the hype for me.

Metal Gear Solid 4. It was one of the main reasons I bought a PS3 but it really dissapointed me because I felt that it was more of a game for conclusion for the fans, rather than a game to be played for fun.

I can think of games that were massively underrated, but not overrated.

I am really trying here but I am finding it difficult to come up with a game that is majorly overrated. There are heeps of games that I would consider overrated but not massively so.

The only one that comes to mind is Halo (I am not trying to be a troll). But I enjoyed Halo. They are fun games with awesome music and an interesting story. It is just held up as a shinning beacon for console players which I agree to some respect seeing as it is the first console FTS i had ever played worth its salt. No, I wouldn't even say Halo is majorly overrated, only slighty.

Tales of Symphonia for the gamecube. Some guy on another forum described it like it was Christ in game form, so I went out and got. I mean, it was good, but it was by no means anything special. The combat was decent but the story was astoundingly mediocre and cliche.

I've had enough of these threads. We've had this so damn much. Why are people so obsessed with things being "overrated"?

It is the best JRPG I have played. I love it. Still, I agree to an extent. There are some people who have their favourits and hold it up as a gods gift. However, I think the OP mentioned reviews that overrated the game, not fanboys.

From memory, the FFVII review in your local gamer mag back in 95/96 got, from my shoddy memory, around 96/100. When it came out, the graphics were some of the best ever seen on a console. Overrated, yes/maybe. Massively overrated, no.

Most games other people say are good I agree with. Halo, FFVII, Company of Heroes, Warcraft 3, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Psychonauts, Half-Life 2, Chrono Trigger, and a ton of other games are all great games. Sure, they aren't the be all and end all of video gaming but each makes a strong case for top of the genre they are in.

I didn't really enjoy System Shock 2 but that's because my attention span has become pathetic over the years and I kept dying with just the wrench but I still recognize that it is a good game... That is the best I can offer.

Halo

Definitly Halo.

Not trying to hate on halo just to hate but really it got like crazy ratings all over the net and in all the magazines and everyone that played it at the time like hailed it as the 2nd coming of christ and it would change my views of pc gaming being better... so I played it. And I was like ummmm.. its an FPS? Its just an FPS.. there was nothing.. I repeat.. nothing special about it. And I still would rather play Unreal Tournament.

Anything that is open world. Plenty of open world games are good, deserve to be appreciated, etc, but that line on any game has absolutely no bearing on the games quality, any more then the choice of Arial or Times New Roman has a bearing on the quality of a short story. Prototype is the first open world game ive played where the combination of the game and the open world aspect is greater then the sum of its parts.
