Final Freaking Fantasy VII.
It's a Great game, just not the Greatest Game EVAR!
That is all.
Agreed. It's been 12 years since it came out and some fan-tards can't seem to let it go. It was good, that's all I can call it. In retrospect, the story is incredibly Emo. Granted, Hironobu Sakaguchi's father died when he was writing it so that would explain much of the darker themes and psychological material. Often times the best creative work comes from anger or sadness.
Still, when you have fans that put a certain game on a pedestal like that, it tends to affect their opinions of other games that they somehow justify in their minds as trying to steal FFVII's so-called limelight.
I have my favorites like anyone else, and I'm guilty of this in my younger years, but it helps if you can get over it. You may be missing out on some great stuff out there.
Other overrated games in my opinion, as everyone else was already quick to point out, are Halo and World of Warcraft.
I'll give the first Halo game it's props for helping to reinvent the modern shooter at that time... but it stops there. The next two games did nothing different that really mattered. And, as I always say, it's just a shooter. The general mechanics of a first-person shooter don't change. Ever. You move forward, you pull your trigger, the bullets fly, the peoples fall down. Rinse and repeat. Oh, there's a story? Who cares? They're about as relevant as the general theme of Super Mario Bros or Sonic the Hedgehog. Bad person does bad things, beat them and save the world/girl.
World of Warcraft... is proof that the simplest and more mind-numbing repetition is what makes the most money. You grind for exp for hours on end, you're forced to do arbitrary "Kill X amount of Y" quests for no real game world-changing reason, you have to put up with a user-base who's majority population are hormone-crazed foul-mouthed 14 year old boys who do nothing with their free time besides master PvP combat and wank off to pictures of Miley Cirus and Miranda Cosgrove, you run instances/raids for new gear just so you can repeat said process over and over until the level cap, at which point you have no one to revere you for your outstanding time-wasting achievements but your own delusional little mind.
