I only ever played Ruby; I accidentally killed Groudon and got Raquayza with a repeat ball, so I blew the masterball on a random Hariyama I came across one day. It was irrelevant anyways; Swampert was all I needed.

Gen 1 (Red/Yellow): Articuno - He was my favorite legendary bird, and I wanted him instantly. I can catch Mewtwo with Ultra balls, and have become pretty good at it, so no biggie.
Holy friggin' crap, the legendary birds are what got me to give up on catching everything in the original Blue. I think I managed to get one or two of them, but it may even have been trying and repeatedly failing to capture Articuno that made me get fed up with the game. I beat it and got my Mewtwo and all that, but the rest of those bastards were too much work. Makes me wish I'd been playing it in an emulator with save states instead of on my old GBC.

As far as the newer games, I haven't played any of them far enough in to ever have to make that decision. I keep wanting to like them, but they all seem to manage to do something to annoy me.
Well, I recommend Soulsilver/Heartgold.
It takes the best things of all the previous games and combines them into something amazing. Plus being able to re-explore Kanto, the region Yellow/Red/Blue were set doesn't hurt either.

Gen 1: Not used and I have all versions aswell(red, blue, yellow)
Gen 2: I think it was on a roaming beast can't recall really.
Gen 3: Don't have any of the gen 3 games so yeah...
Gen 4: Haven't used it yet either but I'll see if I can find that lvl 3 pidgey you were talking bout

Yeah, my friend's been telling me the same thing, and it's kind of tempting, but I don't have my own DS, and I'm not sure if I could hijack my girlfriend's for long enough to make it through something like that. I might see if I can get away with that, though...

There are 2 Arceus in gen 4 one at level 80 and one at level 100. Both are event pokemon one you catch wild and the other you are given. If you play hg/ss you need both as there are two arceus events that let you get garitina palcia or dialga (please excuse my spelling of their names). So yes you can catch it and yes you are given it both of you are right.

Gen 4(Soulsilver): Raikou - I needed a good electric pokemon for the Elite 4. I got Lugia earlier with a few Heavy Balls, so it was free and just used it on Raikou. Glad I did, because I'm hunting after Entei right now, and he's a ***** to catch. I also have to get Latios. May as well take one out easy.
Heart Gold/Soul Silver are reboots of Gen 2. Generation 4 is Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
Bulbapedia categorizes them as Gen4 games, so I will as well.

Going by the logic on Bulbapedia you are still wrong. The game itself is 4th gen but the Pokemon within are every gen before 4th. HG/SS are basically 2.5 Gen since they are rehashes with a lot different game style. Also going by Bulbapedia's logic that will make Pokemon Black and White also 4th Gen and not 5th Gen. The Generations tend to go by the Pokemon not the game and when it is made.

The games (Soulsilver and Heartgold) also contain pokemon from the 4th gen, if the pokedex is anything to go by.

Fire Red and Leaf Green had Gen 2 Pokemon but by and large are considered reboots of gen 1

Gen 1: Onix (I hadn't really realised what the Master ball was and that there was only one.)
Gen 2: Lugia, most likely.
Gen 3: Never played.
Gen 4: Haven't used it yet. I'm saving it for a random shiny!

Never have I used a MasterBall. In Sapphire, I used a wynaut and UltraBalls to catch Latias. That's right. I used a wynaut to get it down to 1 hp. Shadow Tag FTW.

I have this weird problem of saving every item I won't be even using. And I save some items I would have a use but don't want to waste them. Though I did use Masterball on Lugia.

They also had gen3 pokemon.

I'm starting to consider a game to be a certain generation based on what pokemon are in it. Gen 1 has pokemon only from generation 1 in it, gen 2 has pokemon from gen1 and 2, gen 3 has pokemon from gen 1, 2, and 3, and so on and so forth.
