Light of Day, Day of Darkness by Green Carnation. The 1-hour metal epic that truly transcends so many of the barriers set by more conventional metal. This is strictly a headphones album/song as you need it to really capture all the sounds in the multiple layers of recordings. Besides the regular members of the band, the album features a wide cast of guest musicians throughout the song. The only fault I have with the song is around the 34-40 minute mark where one of the female vocalists showcases her vocal range, which is impressive, but doesn't add a lot to the overall feel of the song and can get a little annoying at the higher octaves.

Everything by Rammstein

Leviathan by Mastodon, more specifically, Blood and Thunder
...
In addition to THAT and THAT, I submit Neonate by the fantastically named Giant Squid. Not really along the same lines, but it sounds a bit like Iron Butterfly and Electric Wizard had a sweet, sludgy baby.

Edit: dude, what? I apparently hadn't posted before. Huh.

I'd say that Cowboys From Hell by metal gods Pantera is the kind of all metal tracks. If you had to bottle everything that's awesome about heavy metal, you'd be left with Cowboys From Hell.

Next up, Painkiller (and indeed the whole of the similarly titled album) by Judas Priest is just a masterwork of metalnessness.

I send much love and respect Nouw for suggesting Megadeth, even if he did suggest the wrong song. Rust In Peace (Polaris) is what he was looking for.

I'm not really keen on anyone suggesting things that were released after about 1990 unless it's from a really established band who kept being metal throughout. There's some good bands around today, but unless you were around when heavy metal was still developing, then you don't count in my book, particularly when you are talking about something being a masterpiece. Masterpieces are what initially built and solidified a genre. Once the rules are there, anyone can follow them and make something great, but its not a genuine masterpiece. Anyone can paint like Picasso, but only his work is a masterpiece.

Oh and Rammstein aren't heavy metal. Sorry, they just aren't. They are a great band, but the are definitively not a heavy metal band. They are part of Neue Deutsche Härte, which is itself an offshoot of Industrial. There's a HUGE raft of music that could be vaguely considered heavy metal because it has distorted guitars, but that's just not enough. Only original heavy metal (priest and maiden) and its immediate family (speed, thrash and glam) really come under the umberella. You can maybe nudge in doom and death metal if you really must, but the more modern hybrids aren't the same thing at all. I really don't wanna be 'that guy', because I hate that guy, but it needs to be said.

Not to start screaming OMG SLIPKNOT ISNT HEAVY METAL GOD YOU ARE SO NOT HARDCORE or anything, but posting Slipknot in a heavy metal thread? Heavy metal? I know, technically, Metallica arent really Heavy Metal either but eh...
Metal to me is an attitude, not a particular rule set for sound.

Being pedantic about sub-genres is silly to me because no-one is ever going to agree on everything - I'm sure we can all agree Slipknot are pretty metal in their attitude and 'feel'.

Dear god yes, this is also probably my favorite Opeth song... Everything on Orchid is so musical and brilliant...

And of course...

You beat me to the next thing... Not many bands have something to say that can last even 5 minutes, let alone a whole hour, but everything here just WORKS... It flows amazingly and is incredibly deep and complex and beautiful.

I see a lot of other great things here... I honestly can't think of anything else I have to add off the top of my head as I've not been listening to all that much metal lately, I've mostly been doing old crazy rock stuff like Zappa and King Crimson. This might shift me back in that direction for a while though. Plus I still have to finish a solid listen of that live Opeth album that came out recently.

Lots of great songs have been posted, but I think a lot of people are missing the author's aim in this, sounds like he wants the absolute epics that transcend regular songs (and the mere 5 minute mark!) and leave the listener literally gasping for breath afterwards.

On that note, I present The Last Baron by Mastodon. Hell, if you have time listen to the whole album Crack the Skye, but this closing track never fails to leave me speechless. Only problem is that it makes all my other music sound... small. Damn you Mastodon for making my music collection wither in your shadow!

Actually, it is pretty easy to differentiate between the sub-genres, that's why they exist ;d Yeah, there are some weird and obscure ones, but nobody really cares about them. Slipknot isn't "real" metal and only 14 year olds and closeted pop fans listen to them. You can argue that Goth music is an attitude and feel, but metal is very precisely defined. I'm not trying to offend anyone, i'm just trying to clear everything up.

OP:
Pantera - Vulgar display of power (yes, the whole album)
Nightwish - Oceanborn (again, the whole album)
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction
Epica - The Classical Conspiracy (all classical covers)
Tristania - Sequel of Decay

There are many more, because every sub-genre has its own masterpieces, i'm just giving a few examples.

Sorry but you lost me there. That statement is pure bullshit.

I'm 31 and get a good feeling listening to early Slipknot. Age snobbery with music bugs the shit out of me.

EDIT: Also, I've been listening to ALL kinds of metal since the 80s. So don't play the age card with me.

Vulgar Display of Power is a truly great album. After all these years Walk still sends a chill down my spine. One of the few that still do after such a long time...Fade to Black and One by Metallica still do that too.

Yeah, everyone listening to Slipknot say that, don't worry. I'm not trying to "convert" you, because I know I won't be able to, and besides who am I to tell you anything. Listen to what you will, it's not my place to tell you otherwise.

So.. Rammstein? Well, before Rammstein, there were the gods of Industrial Metal. And that riff is just incredible.

WARNING: Some disturbing images

Ministry - Just one fix
Album: Psalm 69
Defined American Industrial Metal and is one of the best albums of Ministry (before a few ones that... well.. kinda sucked)
Other great songs from the album: Psalm 69, NWO

I'm so glad i was able to see Ministry live, twice.
(Wacken 2006, first row... Unbelieveable)

Candlemass - Mirror Mirror
Not a very serious video, but a great song. Their slower stuff is great too. Candlemass made a fantastic comeback with their new singer and I can highly recommend the two latest albums.

Bathory - A Fine Day to Die
Too few young Metalheads that love Amon Amarth and everything new "pagan/viking" know this Song. Even if you don't like Bathorys more Black Metal'ish songs, this one is just killer.

Straw-manning won't work here. Converting me isn't the issue.

The issue is you claiming that only kids or pop fans enjoy Slipknot.

Some of the biggest metalheads I know love Slipknot - older dudes who've been listening to metal longer than most people on this forum.

Basically - you're just being an elitist snob.

PS _ I'm not even a big fan of theirs - I just hate the snobbery.
