Straw-manning won't work here. Converting me isn't the issue.

The issue is you claiming that only kids or pop fans enjoy Slipknot.

Some of the biggest metalheads I know love Slipknot - older dudes who've been listening to metal longer than most people on this forum.

Basically - you're just being an elitist snob.
You know interesting people then. And yeah, sure, brand me ignorant or an elitist snob, it doesn't really matter to me.

Huh i guess everyone on the escapist is 15 years old.
Considering the genre has been going for pretty much 40 years now (I'm basing that from Black Sabbath btw) that statement is indeed a load of bollocks >_> Obvious troll is...

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
I saw the thread title and came on to post this very song... but you beat me to it.
don't forget 2 Minutes to Midnight, a staple style of most power metal. Just like Bark at the Moon by Ozzy Osbourne. Very influential.

Oh, and don't forget Deadly Sinners or Battles and Brotherhood by 3 Inches of Blood. They've since become staples of metal as well.

Vulgar Display of Power is a truly great album. After all these years Walk still sends a chill down my spine. One of the few that still do after such a long time...Fade to Black and One by Metallica still do that too.
It truly is. It's one of the most influential, if not the most influential, album in metal.

It feels like I post this in a lot of metal related threads, but here goes once again as it's so worthy. If you are interested in the history of metal check out the awesome documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478209/ ).

No. I could not disagree more with that statement.

We can agree that metal is a genre so broad and vast with so many different subgenres and blurry boarders that at the end of the day its silly to argue whats metal and whats not, but you cant just say its got the "metal feel". What do you think is the metal feel?
Aggressive energy. Distorted guitars. Loud drums. Staccato picking. Harsh or loud, screamed vocals. Catharsis. Comradery through artistic expression.

None of these are exclusive to metal, and not every metal band uses them all - but to me a healthy mix of most of these elements constitutes 'metal'.

My 10 favourite metal bands, of the top of my head, are all completely different, have completely different lyrical themes, have a different message and a different feeling. There is no overarching feeling that all metal conveys. There isnt even a feeling that 50% of metal brings with it.

Thats what I feel about the subject.
So how then, do you define metal?

Well, this song is about as far from a masterpiece as you can get in this genre, but the video...

Or maybe I'm just miffed at being so late to the thread that I'm far from the first to be ninja'd on Hallowed Be Thy Name.

...and I know this one will be contended a bit, but...

Funeralopolis - Electric Wizard

Amazing amount of energy crammed into a slow song, without harming the stoner doom ambiance by being too peppy. A real tightrope act EW walks to perfection.

In modern metal: anything by Mastodon and Periphery. The two most talented metal bands around today

What I admire most about Poisonblack is their ability to convey emotion. Even though they are amazing, I don't listen to their music very often, because I find the sadness in the songs to be too contagious. Of course, I can't always help myself because they are too damn brilliant to not listen to.

It's not about aggressive energy, it's energy as a whole (and very few bands actually convey a message of aggression). Metal in general is defined by these things you said, that's why slipknot, korn, disturbed etc are branded Nu-METAL, but it's not "real" metal. They use really simplistic 2-3 note melodies, which is traditional in popular music in general (pop, rap etc). That's why people compare metal to classical music, it uses very varied, very beautiful melodies in layers upon layers. Like classical music, metal needs mastery in your chosen instrument and a mind for musical composition.

No, it really doesn't.

Metal can be simplistic as fuck and still be metal.

Iron Maiden proves that you don't need vocals to make a powerful song. This song is perfect for jogging/ working out.

That's a really old song (pre- Vulgar Display of Power) and you can't really give it as an example. And Black Sabbath are one of the fore fathers of metal, so of course they can't be symphony grade quality, that's like saying "Great, you discovered fire! Now make me a flamethrower"

Steel Panther- Death to all but metal, look it up, seriously.

On a more serious note,

1.Judas Priest- Livin' after midnight
2.Motley Crue- Girls, Girls, Girls
3.Metallica- Holier than thou
4.White Zombie- Thunderkiss 65'

Judas Priest defined metal, Motley Crue reinvented it to a more widespread audience, Metallica really needs no explaining, and White Zombie was one of the more unique metal bands.
