I find it wierd that a company would turn its failure into something that people can enjoy. Most companies wouldn't waste anymore time or money on a dying project. It is like putting firecrackers on a dying plant. It may seem entertaining but from a business standpoint it is a waste of firecrackers.
You could argue however that in doing so, it would make the company go up one step in the eyes of consumers, something that after Star Wars: Galaxies, SOE really needs to do.
You make a good point but, this is out of character for a big name company. Nine times out of ten, a company would act like a soulless money machine but in this instance you got a company putting more money into something that has failed to yield a sustainable profit. I look at it like this. A huge billion dollar company cared enough about the small fanbase of a failing MMO that they put money into it(knowing full well that there would be no profit mind you) in order to please the games small fanbase is inconceiveable. I mean a company that actually cares about people is preposterous.

Well I have very mixed emotions about this one because I played closed beta of MxO back in the day and really wanted this game to work.

It follwed the classic MMORPG development path and coul be used as a "how not to" for anyone considering making a game from a successful franchise.

Its demise is a testament to arrogant designers, closed minded developers, agressive marketers, ambitious timelines and a general level of overconfidence and unwillingness to listen to the fans, that could have only ever ended in tears.

BIOWARE - Look hard at this lesson and remember it everytime you see hundreds of posts on the SWOR forums saying your direction wont work. Yes they are only fans and WTF would they know. But maybe... just maybe... gamers arnt as dumb as you think.

Most people on the MxO forums at release predicted this outcome. The only surprise to many of us was how long it took.

If only all mmo's had a planned way to go, i wonder what SWG will do when their time comes
This is what I was thinking. Having another Restuss-scale battle would be incredible.

Honestly, this article simplifies and misleads about what was going on. The devs wanted to give everyone a little fun, but there was no real end event, just a giant party.

It's not like any of this was something new. They basically let it be Halloween, Christmas, and the end of the world all rolled into one for the past month or so. Lupines, zombie spawns, yetis in special Christmas missions, snowball fighting, santa-inspired outfits, etc.

The dark skies, red skies with eyes, and ash and snow were all remnants of previous events and would cycle through the day. Sometimes it would be pitch dark (Halloween), sometimes normal greenish tinted sky, sometimes a bright blue sky (the end day was all bright and blue sky), sometimes it would snow, other times the snow would turn red, other times it was that black sky with black snow/ask falling down, other times the sky would turn red and sometimes have those creepy eyes in it.

However, they did a good job with what they had. For the last couple of days, they leveled everyone to 50 and gave us all 4 billion info to level stuff and buy things with, added super rare and awesome loot to normal vendors, then leveled us to 69 the day before shutdown, and finally, to level 99 on the final day.

My guild and I spent time taking down an agent now that we were 99, we took on some challenges in small teams that were formerly only doable by very large numbers, and just basically had a great time experiencing some things we never did before. Even though it wasn't a new event, it was fun and memorable and people like Walrus and Dracomet did a very good job with what they had at their disposal.

Wasn't there another MMO that did something like this not too long ago?
That would be Tabula Rasa.

The idea was unstoppable aliens would attack and wipe everyone out. It was something of a boob though as the unstoppable alien invasion was in fact beaten back by the players, which was awesome.
The game ended anyway, it just so happened that it got to go out on an emphatic victory rather than the Doomsday device.
That´s dsiplaying styles both ways. beautiful anyway!

Style is the most important.

I bet that event garnered a few more players briefly...
Check the Xfire's "Game Statistics" graph on the The Matrix Online page [http://www.xfire.com/games/tmo/The_Matrix_Online/]. :)

In case the graph is outdated by the time anybody reads this:
The thing wobbles, but never gets above 250 players for the month of July.
It hits 500 between July 29 and 30, 750 and then 1000 between July 30 and 31, and 1250 after July 31.

The text says:
Xfire users playing per day: 237
Minutes played per day: 76,996
Xfire Rank: #159, up from #229 yesterday
Highest: #30 on 2005-05-21

I suppose it might show an even higher number once Xfire processes the latest data.

"For us, the storm has passed. The war is over. But let us never forget those who journeyed into the howling dark and did not return. For their decision required courage beyond measure...sacrifice, and unshakable conviction that their fight; our fight, was elsewhere. As we start to rebuild, this hillside will remain barren, a memorial to heroes fallen. They ennobled all of us, and they shall not be forgotten."

This seems an appropriate speech.

I'd imagine it was quite a sight to behold. At least the developers put effort into the end of something they've worked hard on, rather than just flipping the off switch at midnight.

So many memories...

MEMORIES OF TRYING TO INSTALL THE FUCKING THING?!

I'm not even exaggerating when I say that I spent an abominable amount of time attempting to install it. I'm glad I avoided it's mediocrity though, and I admire S.O.E for their ability to admit their mediocrity.
