It isn't, its just so close to 1 that nobody cares.
That's not necessarily true, if it was, then 2.999rep would = 3. But the proof given in my OP doesn't work in that case. It only works for 0.999rep = 1
Your'e both wrong. 0.9rep = 1

First 1/9 = 0.1rep Therefor 1 = 0.9rep

The proof for 2.9 is the same.

x = 2.9rep //*10

10x = 29.9rep //-x

9x = 29.9rep - 2.9rep

9x = 27

x = 3

I'm not a mathematics student so this is not really my field, but I think this logic is kind of incorrect.
(0.333_ + 0.333_ + 0.333_)= 3*(1/3) = 1. (0.333_ + 0.333_ + 0.333_)^infinity = 1.
But I would presume (0.999_)^infinity != 1.
Let go of that gut feeling.

0.9rep = 1

It is fundamental.

There isn't a number that is infinitely small. Infinitesimals exist as concepts but not as numbers.

Look at number three.

They even took an example from the Escapist.

I'm not getting into these arguments, I don't see a point.

Creating matter happens all the time. Creating matter FROM NOTHING is the tricky part.

Like Airplane on a Treadmill this topic should really be banned.

There is a clear, proven, and accepted answer on this. 0.999... = 1. Like 1+1=2 it is slightly higher end mathematics, but the answer is clear.

There is no discussion to be had, and so, in my opinion, these threads break the forum rules.

I've had threads locked for low discussion value before that had many times more content than this.

Subtract x from both sides.

9x = 9 (10x - x = 9x, 9.999rep - x (which was originally stated as = 0.999rep) = 9)
^ That's where you made your error, if you multiply X and the value of X in this equation by 10, that means there's 1 less '9' than in just X, infinity - 1 '9's, if that helps; so 10X-X (9X) would equal 0.000...1 in the infinity place, basically.

You're dealing with infinitesimals here, and of course by definition infinitesimals can't be measured, and so will lead to errors if you try to use them in equations.

In short, .999... does NOT = 1, OP is wrong.

.999 recurring =/= 1. However for mathematical purposes it is assumed to be since the difference is infinitely small. Whatever application it is being applied to the difference will always be too small to be significant.

You haven't proven that 0.999rep = 1, what you've actually proven is that 1/3 does not equal 0.333rep. In our decimal number system 0.333rep is as close to 1/3 as we can write, but it still isn't actually the same as 1/3. There is an infinitely small difference between them.

2/3 != 6.6 rec
OP fails at maths.
6.67 = 2/3
6.6 rec is slightly less, never reaching 6.67
1. I think you mean 0.6 rec and 0.67, but that's not why you're wrong.

2. You are correct that 6.6 rec is slightly less than 6.67.

3. your primary point of 6.67=2/3 is completely wrong. as an exercise, try multiplying 6.67 by 3 for me. because it's not 2.

4. The OP does not, in fact, fail at maths, and, while making an irrelevant title, and being amazed at rather simple and well known maths (not really a criticism of the op, I was amazed the first time i saw this), is completely correct. You fail at maths, and you also fail at checking the depth of the water before you jump into a pool.

I suspect you're a troll, but I hate stuff like that, and didn't want to take the risk of you being genuine and your post remaining unaddressed.

Ok, I'm going to try working this through.

.9 repeating can be expressed as
Code:
[color=red]for[/color] x == 1 , x < infinity, x++; {
y == 9/(10^x) + y;}
SO when x is one, y == .9, when x is 2, y == .99 and so on all the way to x == infinity.
This gives you .9 repeated.
Now for calculus

Lim x->infinity (y)== 1 where y is the loop described above.
Lim (1) == 1 pretty self explanitory. Since 1 == 1
Lim x-> infinity (y) == Lim (1) == 1.

They are, by value, identical and interchangeable.

Math is a complex attempt to develop an understanding of our surroundings in a concrete way using what knowledge of all things that we have. I'm not sure tricky equations proves that you can get something from nothing. Let someone experiment and test the idea and come up with something more conclusive. Who knows? Maybe there IS a cosmic loophole. The speed of light is not a constant, but a continual acceleration beyond what we thought to be true. However, it's not the numbers that are going to prove it. Math is...an attempt to fit the pieces we know, constantly having to evolve and change. I consider it incomplete for several reasons, like imaginery numbers.

Fail Maths is Fail. You can't multiply an infinite by a finite.
What do you mean by "an infinite"? People multiply infinitely long numbers together all the time. Theres this thing called, Pi, you may have heard of it.

Alright, many of you have probably seen this before, but for those of you who haven't: get ready for some mathematical magic as I show you an old trick I learned back in highschool to algerbraeicly (spelling) prove that 0.999repeating actually = 1 by itself.

Start with x = 0.999rep

x = 0.999rep

Multiply both sides of the equation by 10

10x = 9.999rep

Subtract x from both sides.

9x = 9 (10x - x = 9x, 9.999rep - x (which was originally stated as = 0.999rep) = 9)

Divide both sides by 9

x = 1

You can also do this with fractions and logic.

1/3 as a fraction is equal to 0.333rep

2/3 as a fraction is equal to 0.666rep

3/3 as a fraction SHOULD equal 0.999rep....but as a fraction, having three thirds of something means you've got the whole thing, which equates to 1.

:p

(on a side not...the Captcha required to post this contained the word "deleted" spelled backwards and upsidedown...what in god's name am I supposed to do there? (cycled through it) )

Alright hotshot, how do you go about creating matter?

How does this show that matter can be created?
Crap thread is crap - seeing as you didn't even mention matter in your post, it looks like you just used a troll title to lure us all into a debate most of us have seen far too many times.
