I fought with you cynics, nay-sayers, and skeptics before.
Now I concede.
I have just now returned from perusing through the recent issue. On the positive side is that
Max Payne 3 will appear to be a well done game.
However...
MAX PAYNE 3 IS NOT MAX PAYNE!
I don't know where to start. It was bad enough to know that Remedy, Sam Lake and James McCaffrey are no longer involved. I would've thought Rockstar would have known their IP and built on the established themes and art styles that made the franchise.
They didn't do any of that.
We can all agree that
The Godfather parts I & II were masterpieces, and we can debate the merits of the third installment. However at least Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo decided to make another
Godfather, complete with the original cast instead of ride the coattails of Scarface.
Where was I going with that? Well. instead of making another
Max Payne, Rockstar seems to be emulating
Resident Evil 5 and the
Uncharted series. Instead of continuing with the series' distinctive art style drawn with dark and hazy simple-toned pastels, the new one is bright and crisp with sharp color pencils and watercolors. There is no evidence of a dark setting amidst a blizzard, there is no evidence of Norse mythology. Instead of a John Woo picture, they went with a Michael Mann one.
I'm past the fact that they decided to turn the skinny and suave city slicker I know as Max Payne into some bulky slobby good ol' boy, but...

Since Max is older, the team decided against using voice actor James McCaffrey again. Instead, they plan on a casting a new coice actor who can better express the toll that the years have taken on the protagonist.
McCaffrey has aged too. I mean it has been six years since the last game; it's not as if he couldn't reprise the role. They're not evolving Max Payne; they're replacing Max Payne.
