hello people, i've been searching around and noticed a lack of many newer pc mech games outside the ones that are rather "big" right now such As Hawken and Mech warrior online. Anyways, i'm looking for some mech combat based games to play. The newer and more customizable the better. Multiplayer is also a big bonus.

As far as im aware, mech games are kinda scarce post-2005. You have MechWarrior 4 and MechCommander 2, but those graphics are going to look dated.

Other than that, I think Xbox (original) had two decent mech games. Mech assault I believe, but even those are dated (2002 and 2004)

Oh hell, I almost forgot. The Armored Core and Front mission series. Although the new Front mission is kinda....meh. Also, most of the front mission games were tactical rpgs rather than shooters (think Disgaea or final fantasy tactics)

Of course, there is Titanfall.

Mech games outside of Japan are quite scarce. Outside of the aforementioned series, I can only think of one: Strike Suit Zero. It's not *purely* mech, but the pilot's ship *can* turn into one when the need arises.

well, thanks for the help you two. I have armored core:FA and V and love the series.

It's a shame that there are so few games it tends to be one of the best (genres/themes?) out there in my opinion.

Could try Titanfall, that has pretty sweet, if simple, mech combat, and lets you run around outside of a mech to, it even has a special mech mode in Last Titan Standing.

I too would love some more mech games, but i cant really be bothered with free to play titles and Japanese 'Gundam' style things just don't appeal to me. I know you said about newer titles but if you haven't tried the older mechwarriors then you may like them once you get over the dated graphics. Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries is a free download that is easy to find. you just need a virtual drive to run it.

Somebody already mentioned Mechwarrior 4, and if you aren't too picky when it comes to graphics, I would recommend Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, especially because it has been released for FREE (!!!) so there's really no reason to not give it a shot. And I do believe it actually has multiplayer severs still up and running, so knock yourself out. Ehh, you may also want to look into configuring the controls, I don't know what the free release is version is like on default, but the original had the most absurd control scheme if you didn't fiddle with it in the options...or practiced using those strange controls like a boss.

Yeh the control scheme is messed up by default, you just need to sort it so that it reads the mouse as turning your torso and WASD as turning and moving your legs then its pretty much sorted. The sensitivity takes a bit of getting used to though, its very all or nothing, it almost feels as though you are having to fight against the weight of the damn Mech to get your cross hairs on target.

Next to the already mentioned there is also MechWarrior Living Legends, not an official licensed game but a fan made Crysis mod that includes pretty much the entire MechWarrior history, even tanks and artillery.
I'm not sure if they are still allowed to legally run it but it is live and working for the moment.

The other one is M.A.V. - Modular Assault Vehicle, a one man band modern recreation of Chromehounds that not so long ago succeeded on it's Kickstarter and in that you can build mechs piece by piece, it is available as an early alpha but do expect very rough edges before going into this.

Try Iron Brigade. It's on Steam, a Double Fine game. It's decent, with decent co-op up to 4 players, but it has a bit of a lag issue when going 4 player survival. Apparently, with just 3, there is no such problem, but I never tried it.
WW1 style, with mech and pilot customisation.

Eh, slim pickings. Pretty much everything past Mechwarrior 4 / Mech Commander 2 is multiplayer focused. Sad, really. I'd kill for a new Mechwarrior or Heavy Gear game. And I mean a proper game, not this multiplayer-only bullshit we've been getting these past few years...

There is Gun Metal on Steam:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/267920/

Shogo: Mobile Armor Tank Division on GoG:
http://www.gog.com/game/shogo_mobile_armor_division

Shattered Steel on GoG:
http://www.gog.com/game/shattered_steel

Slave Zero is kind of a mech game on GoG:
http://www.gog.com/game/slave_zero

Tsunami 2265, I have it on disc bought years ago, only place to find it now is Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Tsunami-2265-PC/dp/B000068XL6

Unfortunately I don't think any but Shogo even had multi-player, best bet is Titan Fall, it's great, but it gets old fast with so little maps.

The thing with Titanfall is that I feel like it isn't so much a really solid mech FPS as it is a really solid parkour FPS with mechs in it.

I mean, the mech play is pretty good, but I don't know how focused on mechs it is - at least for me, I always leave my titans on autopilot when I play.

This is all based on OP's specific tastes, but I would give Titanfall a shot if you have $60 to burn, or wait for it to drop in price. It's a solid multiplayer experience.

Oddly enough, that feels appropriate to what they were going for in MechWarrior: Battlemechs are supposed to be "walking tanks", not super-robots freed of the physical laws (which is more akin to Armored Core, Zone of the Enders and Gundam).

Which isn't to say that's how all mech games should play, it's just how MechWarrior plays.
But if you're a gamer who is used to quicker/smoother aiming and movement (especially modern shooters), it's quite alien and probably why western mech games are virtually unheard of outside of MechWarrior.

As for other mech games... (not specifically directed at you, but the topic in general)

Chromehounds (and now, M.A.V. on PC) is probably the best go-between for the lot in theory, but M.A.V. needs time to develop, and Kickstarter projects are very iffy things.

I play HAWKEN, and I kinda like the "junkyard dog" feel and setting of that game, but the restrictions of the F2P model is starting to chafe; it just costs too damn much. You get very little in return for investing real money into it. Skins and models are mech-specific and not account-wide, unlocking and buying components is a ripoff.

Overall, I'm just amazed at how little investment there is into the mech concept as a whole.
It's probably the only reason Titanfall is getting so much hype right now and it shows just how big of an untapped market that is.

Well I tend to mostly pilot my mech but I play with a dedicated group of people so we tend to gang up and never need to get out the titan until it goes nuclear, if somebody rodeos we jsut shout "punch me" and somebody will melee` the wee gobshite off.

I play with a group of people as well, I just find that playing as the pilot is far more fun than piloting a mech. But that's an individual taste kind of thing.

Depends how my piloting session goes, if I get instantly fucked up by 3 titans that come from nowhere it's shit, but if I end up punching a dude in the face as he mounts his friends titan then executing his friend from his titan, that's pretty badass.

Just a quick list off the top of my head:

MechWarrior 2 + expansions
MechWarrior 3 + expansions
MechWarrior 4 + expansions
MechWarrior Online
MechWarrior Tactics
MechCommander 2
Hawken
Titanfall
Iron Brigade
Shogo
Strike Suit Zero

Some of these are older titles. Others are online only.

Sadly, there's just slim pickings when it comes to 'mech combat games.

This is not to say there aren't fantastic games within the genre, it's just....a relatively untapped one. :/

Hawken feels a hell of a lot more than a cheap COD clone than a Mech game. :S This is the main reason why I stopped playing, you get that feeling that if you get them from behind you can sceed. Mod rules no matter what, and it's a random shit-show when you finally hit someone face-to-face. Further more, the customization you find in a typical mech game is shot.

Also, the latest front mission... The Genre change did not help it at all. It also feels like a cheap COD Knockoff. If it were a TBS, I would have been all over that shit, and probably still playing it. But the sections where you jump out of your mech were so dull and boring, I just stopped playing, and I never bought my own copy. My brother wanted to return it as well, as he didn't like it.

I guess I got used to Phantom Crash, for the old X-box. You can modify your mechs so you've got a mech with 6 legs, a sniper rifle, chain-saw, and 2 middle packs, or have a mech with a wheel on each leg, rocket launchers, and a mortar and laser on it's shoulders. Everything else pales in comparison to something with that capability and fast paced action, or turned based strategy if we look at Front Mission 3.

I'm gonna have to look at these titles that people mentioned here. I've been needy for a mech game I don't have to code myself. Perhaps when I'm done my Rain System, I'll make a Mech TBS like FM3.
