And if the sales were to bomb...all we would lose is a modernized, bullshit-realistic, first person shooter.

That might actually be a step in the right direction.

Just curious as to why (in timeline perspective) people are dissing MoH as a CoD clone when MoH:AA was actually released prior to the original CoD. Perhaps people are just unaware of facts...
No, I don't think MoH has a chance in hell of regaining what it had with AA, but to say that getting a B- rating kills the franchise, just not true. I don't think the "industry experts" have faith in their games anymore.
It's not being dismissed a COD clone. It'e being dismissed as a bad generic multiplayer shooter. Which is what all these games are. Some are just not as bad.
Hmmm, then pretty much every FPS with online multiplayer released after Quake is a generic multiplayer shooter... lol.

Meh. As far multiplayer/single player goes for this, I won't be picking it up. Its pretty much BC 2 upgraded multi wise and I have no reason to waste money on something that I have that is a little worse. Maybe when the price falls I shall pick it up. Single player, I love CoD single player above everything else.

I've been able to buy it early from where I work since last Friday and have been playing it non-stop online. I prefer it to COD:MW2.

Am I the only one who feels kind of sad about living in a world in which an aggregate review score in the low-to-mid-80s is just enough to consign a promising franchise to oblivion?
I think a lot of gamers feel that way...
However I don't think a lot of gamers actually view Medal of Honor as a promising franchise. I know I don't.

And the joke of it is that the mid 80s or 90 game scored games all too often turn out to be just average and nothing more. Combine that with the fact that most game publishers seek to actually reach that range and well...put 2 and 2 together and it doesn't start to sound so wierd that the industry chases moreso after mediocrity rather than greatness in the name of returns on their big AAA investments. <.<

I really have to agree with Yahtzee on this one. Complex opinions cannot be expressed numerically. And cold, averaged ones like the ones on metacritic? To quote the developers unison agreement during a meeting a few months back - they really can DIAF already.

I just finished the first level of Medal of Honor. My only complaint is that the graphics look like they belong on a PS2. Yes, I know complaining about graphics is silly and shallow, but this is a bit of a let down. Those Game Stop commercials and screen shots with all the smooth edges and shiny colors? Noooooooooo. I kept checking to see if I could change the output or something, but the game is stuck that way. EA, if you want to beat Call of Duty, you're going to have to update the graphics. Also, multiplayer trophies are a BIG no no EA. Just no.

On the plus side, they added something I've always wanted to be able to do. You can slide into cover. I was always jealous that AI could do this in other games, but I couldn't. I can here. Can't comment on the story yet, as I'm not that far in, but it seems okay so far. As a bonus, the PS3 version comes with Medal of Honor, Frontline (the last GREAT MoH game) for free. I wonder if they added trophies to that.

I think that Medal of Honor is leaving the over bloated WW2 shooter genre for the over bloated Modern Day shooter genre. Trying to stand up against the crowd doing what the crowd did 3 years ago won't get you anywhere.

Maybe it's not about the score, but it's about what's in the reviews? Personally, I use Metacritic and READ a lot of the reviews not just look at the numbers. Sometimes Metacritic reminds me of The View (and yes, Star Jones is totally IGN), and it can get stupid, catty, and opinionated without any substantial backing to the claims being made. Games that are good get picked on for stupid minor things (like, oh I didn't like the main character's hair color) and their score is hurt because of it.

Medal of Honor, however, is being critiqued because of bugs and glitches. That's no bueno. Bugs and glitches are acceptable in sandbox games that would take decades to Q&A and.... oh wait, that's it. A 10 hour shooter should not have glitches, tearing, bugs or engine chugging of any kind.

Most of the reviews have said this:

The Single Player is outstanding. The Multiplayer is not.

The style of game that MoH and CoD are do not go hand in hand with good multiplayer. Want a good multiplayer? Well, looks like you're going to have a crappy single player. Want a good single player? Better take a lot of content away from multiplayer!

Reviews are useless.
I think the reason they put two different dev teams on the game was to put a stop to that sort of problem. Danger Close did the campaign while DICE only did the multiplayer.

Whatever happened to Republic Commando?
Oh that was actually interesting and fun so it was ignored by the general public.
Irony is so thick in that, I will spread it on my sammich and eat it. YUM!
*sniff sniff*

A great game.

WHAT HAPPENED TO SEV, DAMMIT!
Republic Commando, like some other unfortunate games, is criminally-underrated. Sure, it's gameplay wasn't a massive leap foward, but the story, atmosphere, premise, and characters were all standouts. If only LucasArts could be persuaded to make/publish a proper addition to that franchise....

Actually, Republic Commando is a good example of a potential franchise (or, semi-franchise, since it is and of itself a part of a much larger franchise) that was given only a single entry due to lukewarm reviews. On the topic of the original post, I think that it's a shame that metacritic ratings are given such authority over how games are percieved. It seems lost on people in this day and age, that a review is simply one person's opinion (a review isn't, as some people seem to think, an objective authoritative evaluation of a product), and that a combination of reviews is simply a collection of opinions belonging to people whose job it is to assign opinions a numerical value. Someone may have been onto something when they said that opinions are too complex to assign a number and be done with it. Letting a number decide things seems a bit absurd when you think about it, doesn't it?

As far as I'm concerned, if we just read reviews (or watched/listened to) and didn't pay any attention to that arbitrary number stuck onto the end of it, we would be a bit better off. If we collectively took all of those reviews with a grain of salt, it would be even better. Medal of Honor, even if some of us might percieve it as a bad game, doesn't deserve to have it's future decided on some numerical representations of opinions. Let the opinions themselves decide the matter.

Trophies and achievements in multiplayer don't bother me, it's when you need to get them to unlock the the full game that it pisses me off *cough TF2 cough*

No surprise to me.

The problem is that there is SO MUCH content to choose from out there these days that if something isn't perceived of as flawless, it gets bagged on. In movies and game in particular, there are legions of nit-pickers anxious to complain.

How shallow and spoiled people have become. On average, the quality and amount of entertainment available now is far above that of even 10 years ago, yet there are those that still feel they are owed something.
we are owed something. we're spending money on their games and movies and if they feel its ok to slap us with crap there's no reason to stand for it. quality over quantity.
OT: Reviews are crap. i only watch yahtzee for the entertainment value.

A lack of 85-90 will hardly be a black eye for EA's management. In their recent annual report they use a 'metacritic rating of 80 or above' as a KPI on quality. I seriously doubt they would take any real notice unless it fails both their sales expections and 80 on metacritic, otherwise a sequel will probably be a sure thing.

I've just beaten it an hour ago (sadly, it's surprisingly short) and I can't say that anything is wrong with it. I haven't seen any bugs or glitches, and the game was overall enjoyable. The story was ok, it wasn't over the top and compeltely unbelievable. I don't see it selling well though, or getting good reviews. This is due to the fact that it will be compared to other modern shooters and nit-picked to death.

OT: Wasn't the Battlefied Bad Company games supposed to be the "COD killer" or something? Or did that change when I wasn't looking.
Well, I think they're much better than CoD, but maybe that's just me. I guess they're just my personal "CoD Killer".
