Get a flashlight and check your mouth in the mirror. If one of your tonsils has white dots all over it or seems large/red/pissed, then you should see a doctor immediately as it's a case of strep throat/tonsillitis - which can be deadly if untreated and if you wait too long can result in the loss of your tonsils (which is very expensive).

Sometimes it may not be this obvious in the early stages. But it usually starts with this terrible swallowing pain on one or both sides that becomes more painful beyond imagination, then works up to a terrible glass-stabbing pain in the ear. It's just that the enlarged tonsil and abundance of tonsoliths is the biggest give-away.

A temporary relief for that pain is to gargle salt water a few times a day, especially after every meal, and drink/eat only very cold things. You can also take sore throat liquid medication or suck on lozenges - but that's only a short-term temporary help.

If you don't have tonsils, then this isn't it. Even so, seeing a doctor should be a thought.

And this is a worst case scenario, not the absolute conclusion.

Strep usually presents itself with a fever and if you not feeling pain when you cough that rules out quite a few things.

I've had horrible sore throats before mostly around this time of year. If you don't have the time money or willingness to go see a doctor look some stuff on webmd, i'd say its either allergies or the cold if there aren't any other symptoms. I've had horrible sore throats and i know how you feel soup helps a little bit and maybe some home remedies.

http://www.health911.com/sore-throat

Or the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice remedy my dad use to make when i was kid. Whats in it dad? Honey and lemon juice. That doesn't smell like lemon juice. Just drink the damn thing and go to sleep.

Of course if there is a deeper problem then this won't do anything but mask the symptoms, watch for a fever.

Oh yeah my other favorite pain remedy, clove cigars/cigarettes if you smoke. Cloves mildly numb the mouth and throat but it probably exasperates the problem by dehydrating you.

Hey there, everyone.

I'm in Norway right now and I seem to have come down with a case of a sore throat. Usually a sore throat goes away after a day or two but this has persisted for 5 days and feels very different. I can cough just fine and feel no pain whatsoever, however, when I swallow It feels like broken glass is going down my throat. The pain stops halfway down my neck and tends to manifest on the leftside of my throat.

Can anyone help me? The pain is unbearable.
Try mixing honey and vinegar and take at least 2 teaspoons every 8 hours. If that remedy doesn't bring improvements then see a professional...

Did I mention that I'm a doctor who specializes in organ removals? If that throat keeps bothering you I'd be happy to take care of those lungs of yours.... Mwhahahaha

Strep throat tests don't really take all that long, show up at some clinic or something and ask for it and they'll run you through it after waiting for 10 people with children that have paper cuts and scratches and other retarded bullshit, and call you and tell you what happened.

since almost anything that comes with "sore throat" can have varying and similar symptoms, it's not something you can really e-diagnose. It's either strep, it's unimportant, or you will shit your intestines out in three weeks and the ER will have to figure out what's wrong with you.

I cant let a fellow Code Geass fan suffer.

From someone who use to get sick quite a lot, it sounds like you got Strep throat, it sucks, And it will suck untel it goes away, and sense youve said it has been happening for 5 days, it should be over soon, but see a doctor when you can, they can help, untel then, Honey and Viniger like Madara XIII said should help you out, and just try to relax, the less stress the better.

Feel well soon.

Hmm, when was the last time you brushed your teeth and tongue? Bacteria can grow in those areas and eventually, if left untreated, can hurt like a *****. The best solution is to gargle Listerine. Lots and lots of Listerine.

Edit: If it persists, check a doctor. Might be tonsillitis, might be strep, might be some completely unforeseen thing like there actually being broken glass in your throat.

I've had that before. It was nothing, just a really bad sore throat. I think I had strep or something. Went away after maybe a week.

If it continues for much longer, or you get other symptoms, go to a doctor immediately.

Everyone else was jst saying go see a doctor. Im assuming the idea has occured to u already and theres a reason you can go so = P

Im a biomed student so i know a bit about pathology and disease and whats better is that this is like revision for my test next week so might as well give it a go. Sounds like it could be Tonsillitis. Are your tonsils swollen and red? Do they have little yellow/white spots on them? Any other symptoms like joint pain?

Hey there. I was asking online because I was in a lot of pain but I couldn't go see a doctor due to the time. I did end up going and he said it was a virus, although he didn't tell me which virus, and that it lasts for about 10 days... Hooray, pain for only another 4 days...

Be warned. Last year I had very similar symptoms, and waited a few days before seeing a doctor. The doctor told me I had some random virus and to take 2 aspirin and call it a day. It really hurt to swallow, people told me to drink hot things, rest in bed, and spit in a bucket to keep from swallowing (literally!). I went three more days, then I found myself in the emergency room because my tonsil swelled up to the point of obstructing my breathing. They gave me this instant cure medication, some heavy painkillers, and put a q-tip to my tonsil. They didn't even test it, because it was obvious it was strep.

I was also told (by the people in the hospital) that drinking hot things was stupid, as all that did was give the bacteria a larger breeding ground. I was basically told to only eat Popsicles, pudding, and drink ice-cold water for a few days. Then the whole lozenge thing.

After the emergency room and a day or two in my bed, I was magically better.

I have no clue what the fuck was up with the first doctor. He worked at a random cheapo clinic and did this 3 minute test for the strep that resulted in nothing. And he was wrong. Terribly wrong. Nearly killed me wrong. It was terrible.

So yeah, keep an eye on your tonsils. And go to a different doctor if you start feeling a sharp stabbing pain in your ear. >> I'm serious.

I think that you might have strep throat, though there are usually other symptoms. That being said, I am not a doctor and you should take my advice with a grain of salt. I do recommend saline spray, as that works quite well for a soar throat.
Still, SEE A DOCTOR! No matter what is said here, going to a doctor can only help you. Sure, it might cost you some money (if you live in America or something), but he/she will be able to give you the best advice and the best treatment.
