My friend needs some suggestions for medieval RTS PC games. Any suggestions?

He already knows about Age of Empires and the Civilization series.
I want to get him a game before he leaves for Germany.

Thanks in Advance!

I'd go for Medieval 2: Total war as well. Turn based, Civ style empire building with large scale, realistic RTS combat. Fantastic combination.

Medieval: Total War 1 & 2 are fun. Also if you dont mind playing older games, be sure to check out Stronghold, its a very fun game.

Literally I have played this game longer than some people play MMOs. I really think this is the cumulation of the series technical and storytelling ideals. The expansion pack didn't do this game justice though. If you don't mind a game that you do a lot more strategic thinking than tactical, this game is for you.

If you're like me and like 2d rts titles, try stronghold crusader ( you can skip stronghold 1, expansion has all it's features and ALOT more ) and knights of honor.

Stronghold crusader:

Build your own castle, defend & crush the enemies castle. Units range from pikeman to greek firethrowers, lots of fun seeing an army of horse archers rain down on loads of slowwalking but heavy crusaders. Great atmosphere, great map editor as well. Made some maps back when I played it and had alot of fun seeing them played by others online.

Knights of honor:

Pick your nation and medieval time and try and conquer your way into europe. This game is one of the last 2d great rts titles imo and I'm surprised almost nobody knows about it. You can pick your own king, have to marry off your daughters. Command cities, build up religious favor and trade resources for bonuses. You can fight off in crusaders as a catholic or go jihad on the infidels. Game looks terrific and I had alot of fun with it. Long lurning curve perhaps though.

Settlers 3 & 4

One of the most famous titles. The ones you need to look for these days are settlers 3 and 4. 5 is terrible, avoid this one like the plague. 6 rise of an empire is the latest and you can find some reviews of it on the web, but it's alot more dumbed down from 3/4 just like 5 but playeble. I've had the most fun with 3, since 4 introduces the weird mushroom dark people which I never quite understood. Game is alot more focused on managing resources then military force though.

Total war series

Others mentioned this one already. I barely played this one so can't comment on it much. Heard good things though.

There is one last rts game I remember from years back, but I just can't think of the name and I've been wanting to replay it myself. It came out around the time of settlers IV and I remember it had alot of building as well as fighting, where the economy was build on feeding an army or they would die. Especially the baker that would slam his bread like a madman stuck to me all these years. Anybody?

Do you play with any mods? I find the Stainless Steel mod to be quite enjoyable.. but I have to mod the AI as well.. because in my opinion, the vanilla AI is just horrid, and really makes the game a lot less fun.

I think that the Total War series: Shogun, Medieval, Rome and Medieval 2 (and the next release Empire) are all good RTS games. Shogun and Medieval have a turn based map made of 'solid' provinces (ie, the province is a single entity if you understand what I mean) while Rome and Medieval 2 have the armies, spies, assassins, diplomats etc walk around on the turn based map (or go in ships on water) and must move into contact for a battle (or other event) to occur. The battles all occur in RTS format.

Rome and Medieval 2 have active, dedicated modding communities at http://www.twcenter.net/ among other places; the mods
"Rome Medieval"
"Napoleonic Total War 2"
"Viking: Total War"
"Crusader: Total War"
"Chivalry: Total War"
"Arthurian: Total War"
may interest you. Note that they are mods for Rome: Total War, but they may require Barbarian Invasion, the expansion pack.

Of course you could also go for Age of Empires 2...

Hope that this gives you some ideas.

P.S. IMO settlers 2 beats the other versions hands down, but it's not a typical RTS and it isn't medieval.

Warcraft 3.

It has an excellent player base, and the campaigns are fun and have excellent storytelling
