It was leeching a lot of bandwidth and it was always loading before you started to load the content of the site.fuzzy logic said:I just choose "Forbid www.meebocdn.net" through the No Script add-on for Firefox. Now it doesn't pop-up anymore. I swear it was leeching a ton of bandwidth, or the escapist is just slow today.
all of this, same for me.Nimcha said:It's extremely annoying. It keeps popping up every time I select text and darkens the screen. I hate this kind of crap. If I want to 'share' something on this website I'll do it myself, I do not need some pseudo-smartass widget for it. Argh.
Also the Escapist seems even slower than usual.
You won't see it with Firefox. I had no idea what this thread was about when I entered it.Tubez said:I'm using Opera and I find Meebo to extremely annoying!
So Im wondering why are the escapist using it and how do I turn it off?
You will still see it with Firefox.Sonic Doctor said:You won't see it with Firefox. I had no idea what this thread was about when I entered it.Tubez said:I'm using Opera and I find Meebo to extremely annoying!

It's a Wednesday though, Wednesdays are always extra laggy because of ZP.Nimcha said:Also the Escapist seems even slower than usual.
Yeah but if you cheak your network logs you will see that (for me at least) Meebo takes around 3-6 seconds to load while everything else takes 10-100ms.Dags90 said:It's a Wednesday though, Wednesdays are always extra laggy because of ZP.Nimcha said:Also the Escapist seems even slower than usual.
Well, maybe it is because I am a Pub Club member. Members don't see ads and don't get those captcha things.Tubez said:You will still see it with Firefox.Sonic Doctor said:Snip
I tried safari & opera & chrome & internet explorer & firefox and all of them have it.
Probably.Sonic Doctor said:Well, maybe it is because I am a Pub Club member. Members don't see ads and don't get those captcha things.Tubez said:You will still see it with Firefox.Sonic Doctor said:Snip

Meebo offers "customized advertising", meaning they place a tracking cookie on your computer to see your browsing history. That might be what's causing peoples script alarms to go off (I don't really know computers). You can Opt Out [http://www.meebo.com/privacy/advertising/], but you'll probably have to keep doing so.GothmogII said:The ads are one thing, I understand their necessity with regards to the Escapist. But I don't see the relevance of this toolbar. Does the Escapist get some kind of commission by allow whoever owns Meebo to put it there?
Seriously? If that's true, I may have to consider not coming to the Escapist anymore... I know, I'm a user, I get free content and give little back, I don't deserve to get uppity about this, but I'll wait for an official comment on the matter. Might make a PM about it. Though, actually, that's what I, and everyone else in this thread should have done in the first place. A thread might be good for raising awareness, but site policy as far as I've seen is usually not up for discussion.Dags90 said:Meebo offers "customized advertising", meaning they place a tracking cookie on your computer to see your browsing history.GothmogII said:The ads are one thing, I understand their necessity with regards to the Escapist. The ads around the videos I could cope with. The ads interupting the videos I could (barely) tolerate. This Meebo thing? This shit is annoying. I want an option to turn this off entirely, not just lower it.Master Kuja said:Forced add-ons to plug more adverts.
Classy, Escapist, reeeaaaaal classy.
