I just choose "Forbid www.meebocdn.net" through the No Script add-on for Firefox. Now it doesn't pop-up anymore. I swear it was leeching a ton of bandwidth, or the escapist is just slow today.

It was leeching a lot of bandwidth and it was always loading before you started to load the content of the site.

It's extremely annoying. It keeps popping up every time I select text and darkens the screen. I hate this kind of crap. If I want to 'share' something on this website I'll do it myself, I do not need some pseudo-smartass widget for it. Argh.

Also the Escapist seems even slower than usual.
all of this, same for me.

You won't see it with Firefox. I had no idea what this thread was about when I entered it.

You will still see it with Firefox.

I tried safari & opera & chrome & internet explorer & firefox and all of them have it.

It's a Wednesday though, Wednesdays are always extra laggy because of ZP.
Yeah but if you cheak your network logs you will see that (for me at least) Meebo takes around 3-6 seconds to load while everything else takes 10-100ms.

Im also getting warnings that unsafe javascript attemts to acces frame with url meebo.com

Well, maybe it is because I am a Pub Club member. Members don't see ads and don't get those captcha things.

Probably.

I have no problem having normal adds on the site, but this one is annoying like fuck and slows down the website A LOT.

Hm, I hope this dosnt become a trend for the escapist where they allow add providers to become obnoxious and or intrusive guns ablazing. The pop ups that come up in the cornor are reasonable enough, but back when they took up half the screen was just...urg. And now I cant even load webppages without waiting a minuite for them first because of this godforsaken addon.

Oh thank god. I thought it was just me. I'd figured it for a bit of malware at first, but it wasn't showing up on any of my anti-virus dealies. The ads are one thing, I understand their necessity with regards to the Escapist. But I don't see the relevance of this toolbar. Does the Escapist get some kind of commission by allow whoever owns Meebo to put it there?

I'd -like- to be able to turn it off, but if it's going to be a similar situation as with the site ads, I guess I can just ignore it, as long as it's not a risk for infection or spyware.

In case you have missed it, Escapist, the topic for today is...

[HEADING=1]Meebo is slowing your site down dramatically! Nix please![/HEADING]

That is all.

Meebo offers "customized advertising", meaning they place a tracking cookie on your computer to see your browsing history. That might be what's causing peoples script alarms to go off (I don't really know computers). You can Opt Out [http://www.meebo.com/privacy/advertising/], but you'll probably have to keep doing so.

Seriously? If that's true, I may have to consider not coming to the Escapist anymore... I know, I'm a user, I get free content and give little back, I don't deserve to get uppity about this, but I'll wait for an official comment on the matter. Might make a PM about it. Though, actually, that's what I, and everyone else in this thread should have done in the first place. A thread might be good for raising awareness, but site policy as far as I've seen is usually not up for discussion.

Forced add-ons to plug more adverts.

Classy, Escapist, reeeaaaaal classy.
The ads around the videos I could cope with. The ads interupting the videos I could (barely) tolerate. This Meebo thing? This shit is annoying. I want an option to turn this off entirely, not just lower it.

So, I would like to repeat the above quote: Classy, Escapist, reeeaaaaal classy.

This Meebo shit is really pissing me off.

Fucking Escapist I voted for you guys, and now you're going to stab me in the back for a few extra dollars?

Meebo is not the answer guys, look for a new innovation.

I don't see this Meebo thing and I think I've figured out why. I'm using Safari, on a Mac running Snow Leopard, which doesn't seem to matter. What matter is I'm a Pub Club member, so apparently whatever this thing is, it's for non-paying members. I wonder if this pops up for non-member (by which I mean people who don't have an account on this site). If this is a matter of advertising, this is very annoying because for advertising you should not put an annoying service on your site, especially if it's only affecting certain people. (I joined the pub club for the high def AND to get rid of in video ads. I see far too many of those as is). Any other Pub Club members confirm/deny my suspicions?
