THIS IS THE D.O.J.TheDooD said:Oh ok WAY to step across the fucking line US officials. Megaupload is just a middle man, you can't kill the messenger just cause you didn't like it.
It's not about Megaupload, it's about the precedent it sets for legal entities' ability to prosecute individuals and shut down sites because they're associated with piracy. Now, there may be something to the prosecution's case in this particular instance (apparently Mega was actively doing things that could only be interpreted as encouraging piracy - of course they're denying this), but that doesn't change the question. How culpable are public file hosting/sharing sites and content hosters like YouTube and Photobucket for copyrighted content uploaded by it's users? Don't just dismiss the issue out of hand because you don't use Megaupload.Falthron said:Well I guess that's that. Doesn't really affect me all that much.
If that was true, why would you take down a website for Money Laundering and Racketeering unless they were done on the website? It might be true, but it doesn't make sense to me that they'd shut down the website for it's creators evil ways... Maybe they're gonna sell it to a non-criminal person though? If that's the case, then maybe I was a bit too hasty in calling for Peaceful Protests. If that's not the case, though: We will need a Campaign protecting the internet.Dango said:Except copyright infringement is only one reason for the site being shut down and the founders being arrested. The article lists the other two reasons as money laundering and racketeering, so I'd wait and observe a bit before making any accusations about what this means.
We don't need a Civil war: We simply need Civil Disobediance. Right now, America doesn't need a "Tea Party Movement" or an "Occupy Wallstreet Movement", right now, we need a "Destroy Lobbyism! Movement". That's why nothing is getting done, that's why there are the other movements anyways! Lobbying is destroying the country. We need to find a President who will destroy it and Congressmen who won't be bought.FalloutJack said:Ah, fuck 'one day'. I'm game for right now.Crazy_Dude said:One day US citiziens will have enough of shit like this and a Civil war could happen.
Anyone with me? A little ride down to DC on a cold winter's day to announce that the internet has seceded from the union? I'd like to see the look on their faces for that one.
It breaks my heart to say this but you're right... one of these days people are going to say "No More" and god help those bastards when the people come for them.Crazy_Dude said:One day US citiziens will have enough of shit like this and a Civil war could happen.
I don't want that to happen, but right now the government is really testing just how deep the apathy runs. The question now is, will they stop before the people snap, and we really do wind up with rioting and/or a civil war? It's not exactly a pleasant thought.Mr.Mattress said:Well it's now official: We can't just have an online movement to protect the internet anymore. I don't really support Mega uploads (Heck, I never used it except for a few times to get some Guitar Tracks for this thing I am working on), but they can't charge the owner of Megaupload for the Piracy on his site! If anything, yeah, his site should have been taken down, but he shouldn't be arrested and tried for the piracy.
Guys, I think we need to take this to the streets. It's pretty much clear that the people in charge want to do bad things to the internet!
You realize that even international entities that violate US copyright law are being persecuted, right? So unless you want to, say, move anyone who owns any intellectual property in America to another country, you moving doesn't really help.bleachigo10 said:Well, time to start packing my bags for Canada. I pretty much accepted this fact a long time ago, It's sad. The civil war that gonna happen is gonna completely destroy the US creditability. It's gonna be people and ex soldiers pretty much versus the gov and military. It's gonna be so fucked up that nobody else is gonna deal with us anymore because we're suppose to be above all of it.dalek sec said:It breaks my heart to say this but you're right... one of these days people are going to say "No More" and god help those bastards when the people come for them.Crazy_Dude said:One day US citiziens will have enough of shit like this and a Civil war could happen.
It really does hurt for me to type these words, I love my country and I'm proud of it but this is beyond congress just being money starved gits and it truely enrages me that they can do this without punishment.
I realize this, that wasn't the reason I want to leave. Which is more of a joke anyway since I have neither the money nor the means to actually move there. It was based more on the fact that there was actually a chance SOPA would pass and the fact that they seem to be acting on it regardless. If that makes any sense, i'm horrible at explaining things.summerof2010 said:You realize that even international entities that violate US copyright law are being persecuted, right?
