Megaupload Shutdown by US officials.

It's not about Megaupload, it's about the precedent it sets for legal entities' ability to prosecute individuals and shut down sites because they're associated with piracy. Now, there may be something to the prosecution's case in this particular instance (apparently Mega was actively doing things that could only be interpreted as encouraging piracy - of course they're denying this), but that doesn't change the question. How culpable are public file hosting/sharing sites and content hosters like YouTube and Photobucket for copyrighted content uploaded by it's users? Don't just dismiss the issue out of hand because you don't use Megaupload.Falthron said:
Well it's now official: We can't just have an online movement to protect the internet anymore. I don't really support Mega uploads (Heck, I never used it except for a few times to get some Guitar Tracks for this thing I am working on), but they can't charge the owner of Megaupload for the Piracy on his site! If that was true, why would you take down a website for Money Laundering and Racketeering unless they were done on the website? It might be true, but it doesn't make sense to me that they'd shut down the website for it's creators evil ways... Maybe they're gonna sell it to a non-criminal person though? If that's the case, then maybe I was a bit too hasty in calling for Peaceful Protests. If that's not the case, though: We will need a Campaign protecting the internet.Dango said:

It really does hurt for me to type these words, I love my country and I'm proud of it but this is beyond congress just being money starved gits and it truely enrages me that they can do this without punishment.

You realize that even international entities that violate US copyright law are being persecuted, right? So unless you want to, say, move anyone who owns any intellectual property in America to another country, you moving doesn't really help.bleachigo10 said:
Except copyright infringement is only one reason for the site being shut down and the founders being arrested. The article lists the other two reasons as money laundering and racketeering, so I'd wait and observe a bit before making any accusations about what this means.summerof2010 said:

It was based more on the fact that there was actually a chance SOPA would pass and the fact that they seem to be acting on it regardless.
