I actually thought Buddhism was more a more sensible religion, overall, than that. Apparently I was wrong.
Like any major religion, buddhism has lots of splinter factions. And obviously, some of them are going to be crazy. It's religion after all. The practice of Buddhism also varies a lot from country to country.

Yes, please, cue the flood of arrogant, self-righteous dribble bashing religion.

Am I religious, somewhat. Even if I was not, the obnoxious prattle that many people spew forth would sicken me. I grow weary of the constant assault that religion endures, it is being judged by many people not even remotely qualified to do so.
As an Atheist I have to agree. Sure, I don't believe exorcisms are real, but bloody hell I have no proof that they're impossible. And I certainly won't go around calling people who believe otherwise "backward idiots."

The religion-bashing on these forums can get really overpowering at times.

That said, what happened in this case was disgusting and the monk should be put on trial for this. And the father.

Who WOULD be qualified to bash your religion, if you don't mind me asking?

I agree that some people bash religions for stupid reasons. This topic too has nothing to do with religion. The monk who did this was obviously not acting in accordance to his religion, but was just doing what he thought was right (and with him being an idiot, fucking it up even more). I'm sure religions help many people deal with life, but they also give many idiots the conviction to do what they please in the name of god (or whatever entity that religion worships). Stupid atheists then bash the religion for causing it, which is silly because it was stupidity that caused it, not the religion.

Stupid people are everywhere, in every religion or lack thereof, and in every country. Don't blame the religion or country for the stupidity of some of its members, blame yourself for not even trying to fix the problem.
Perhaps someone with a Ph.D in Theological studies...

But your right, although, how do you fix stupid?
Wait, what? Anyone is qualified to believe, but only Ph.Ds are qualified to question? I mean, I agree that the bashing is annoying, but your argument is even more so.

Literally can't believe that in the first few answers there were people going 'Yes, as a Christian I believe in exorcism'
I have nothing constructive to add. I WANT to say I hadn't even realised that people with internet access could still hold such outdated beliefs but then I've seen people selling spirit familiars online so I guess it's time to give in, we're not going to get better.

OH and for the people whining 'Aw religion bashing SO SAD'

This is about a girl who was killed by an exorcism, and I love that you've made it about how repressed you are.

Aaaand when it comes to exorcisms that don't end in death, does that mean god is on your side? And how do you know that when an exorcism does end in death it wasn't the evil spirit "winning"? Surely, it goes both ways.

I worded it wrong, it has to do with desperation, but were one not predisposed to believing this sort of drivel (were it due to a religious upbringing, attending church regularly or whatever), it would not even occur to someone. This is, of course, assuming we're talking about a someone who has access to information.
So we should ban religion because retarded morons can use it as an excuse to do retarded things? Are you also for banning violent games perhaps, since they can be used as murder simulators?

If you ever meet someone who is doing/saying something stupid, don't call them an idiot but educate them... Or just shoot/sterilize everyone with an IQ below 90 if you are in a hurry and don't mind the mess.

Show a bit of sympathy. After all, in this era millions of christians are being persecuted by militant atheists worldwide.

Poor girl in this yes she was mentally ill but no one deserves to go out like that, her father is clearly stupid. I don't believe in demonic possession, people can do evil things on their own. Exorcism is not real and giving into people's delusion that they are possessed or thinking that first rather than mental illness can only do more harm than good.
That case is terrible parental cruelty even if they think they were doing the right thing you should never put your child in a situation like that where they can die.

...Oh for the love of...!

Look, if people want to try exorcism to make them feel better, that's fine by me, there's a lot to be said about the human psyche. But can they at least do an exorcism correctly...!

I too believe that demon possession is possible, (I'm Christian) but I also believe that 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of all cases of believed demon possession are mistakes
If that is true then it is almost certain that there has never been a demonic possession. By your calculations 1 in 10^64 cases is actually true. Now seeing as there are nowhere near that many people on the planet (or ever have been, or probably ever will be) then we can safely say that none of them are real.

I did not say "question" I said pass judgment. There is a difference. If I look for someone to pass judgment on something I want them to be as qualified as possible. He also just asked me who would be qualified and I gave him an answer. I guess that I would just want someone non-bias, even the Ph.D would have to be disqualified if he/she had a bias.
I also harbor contempt for militant atheists, but I would say the same for religious people fishing for a pat on the back for being one of the 'intelligent religious' folk, who pretend they're open to critical thinking then qualifying their invitation for a difference of opinion with a bunch of bullshit.

Sure, I'm open to an opposing point of view, just as long as it's someone with a PhD in theology who's free of bias. What qualifies as bias, being atheist? Sounds to me like an excuse to never have to acknowledged any point of view expressed by anyone you might ACTUALLY meet.

And just as many grow weary of religion, religious people and their self-righteousness as well. Besides, you can never be qualified to judge something based upon faith. Faith is not based on facts. Education and qualification doesn't even factor into it.

OT: I almost never get offended, but when people talk about "equal value as a human", which basically puts me on the same level as these OBVIOUSLY INDOCTRINATED people, I do get offended.
Every time something like this happens, I feel like we take a step back towards the dark ages.

Get with the times already. Facts, not fiction.
