But yes, the majority of proper "gamers" do tend to favour the Heavy Metal genre music.

First off no its not. This really isint a big gaming community. Now you'd be more accurate if you asked if metal is the music of choice for pretencious snobby atheist gamers. thatd make more sence. Cause its large generlization i know but thats the escapist for you.

I like Metal (not your mainstream bullshit metal like Disturbed or Slipknot, stuff like Arkona and Opeth and Ensiferum and BTBAM and Son of Aurelius) and I like video games, but it doesn't mean the two are connected, it's just things that I have come to appreciate through my own experiences in life.

You're from Finland aren't you? Metal, mainstream? Hearing metal from any place outside my apartment is practically an annual occurrence for me. That aside, please tell me what you listen to. If metal is boring by comparison, I have to hear it (unless by "metal" you mean hardcore).
Nope. From one of the most catholic countries of Europe - Poland, place where Vader, KAT and Behemoth were born. Metalheads are common sight on the streets here, actually recently id even dare to say i see more metalheads than hip hop crowd.

As for my choice of music? I don't lock myself in single genre. Punk, ska, reggae, industrial, cold wave, ebm, aggrotech, indie, classic rock, rock, post punk... and several artists that are impossible to label.
Those metal bands you named are pretty bad.
Don't be rude to someone else's opinion. I'm not a fan of Behemoth but I'll respect the fact that people do enjoy that.

I'd say the correlation is more between nerds and metal than gaming and metal, for a number of reasons. For one thing, it doesn't get much nerdier than, say, Blind Guardian singing about Middle Earth, or Avantsia doing entire rock operas set in an original fantasy world. For that matter, a lot of Death Metal draws from horror movies, another traditionally geeky pleasure. For another, metal is most definitely an acquired taste, and has a complexity that is quite appealing to music geeks -- the type that frequently get into arguments about music theory, not necessarily the type that try to outdo one another by namedropping obscure bands. I'm sure there's more to it than what I've listed here, but most of what I'm thinking of comes down to personal taste, and I can't think of any way to correlate that at the moment.

OBLIGATORY METAL SYMBOL:
\m/. (>_<) .\m/

I don't get why that is either. I would think that the gaming community's musical preferences as a whole would be too vast to fathom, but I guess I'm wrong.

I'm going to guess here, but I think the reason metal is prevelant amongst gamers (from what I've seen with my freinds anyways) is the same reason why me and my friends like certain video game music, because to us it has feeling and emotion. When playing a scene in which an epic battle or desperate escape is occuring, the music that plays during that can make the experience even better if the music used is both relevant and carries some emotion with it, regardless of what style of music it is. Thus in real life, if I ever wish to experience the same thrill or emotion I felt when playing or watching an epic or deep scene/battle, I'll just play some music that has some emotion to it. Since several video game soundtracks aren't easily accessable, I'll play the genre of music I know makes me feel some emotion....metal (not every song or type of metal of course, but I certainly feel more emotion in metal than say rap or hip-hop (I'm willing to listen to it if a song in that genre can make me feel something)).

Usually people that listen to a lot of music listen to metal. It has the most complex rhythms and all that jazz.

Maybe for hardcore FPS players, but a lot of MMO players are seem to favor techno. I swear I have never seen a WoW raid video that did not feature blaring electronica.

I love listening to metal when I play, but it depends on the game. If I'm playing something like God of War or Devil May Cry it's awesome, but not so much with Resident Evil 4 or 5, or Tekken. Then again, whenever I play Guitar Hero, I always make a bee-line for the metal songs.

I like a lot of stuff.

I actually find myself listening to metal less and less lately.
Yeah, that's a thing with me also. I used to be a total metal head, but now I barely listen to any at all. Anywho I think that metal is so prevalent in the gaming community is because it just goes so well together with games especially with fps. The rhythm and intensity of it adds to the I guess "epic" experience and pumps you up. That's what I think.

Not that into metal. Even the metal I do like is just stuff like Megadeth.

Can't boil down my musical interests to one genre or band.

I prefer pop/punk and a bit of post-hardcore.

I actually dislike metal due to the (generally) samey nature of each and every song.
Why is that everyone who dislikes Metal always says that its samey when its acctually NOT samey at all.
Because they've heard one sub-genre of metal, and ALL METAL IS THIS METAL.
Comparing, say, Strapping young lad to Dragonforce would be laughable.

If someone says a lot of metalcore is samey, then fair enough. If they tell me that metal is samey after listening to Opeth or SikTh they'll get a blank stare and a slap.

I think "gamers" in general have a much broader taste in music than most people as they are exposed to more genres because of gaming.

My gf is into that sort and I never got into it. Particularly Radiohead. It just seemed like the Pixies watered down and without the oddness to me.
I'm not saying its bad, just not my thing.
