I prefer pop/punk and a bit of post-hardcore.

I actually dislike metal due to the (generally) samey nature of each and every song.
Why is that everyone who dislikes Metal always says that its samey when its acctually NOT samey at all.
Because thats what rap-haters say about rap and techno-haters say about techno :p

I like most types of music, none of this over-produced recent stuff but I enjoy Metallia, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc. to get into the mood for gaming

Is there a correlation between the age of gamers and metal fans? Perhaps people in the teen years? Please don't bother quoting this post with "I am not a teenager but like metal and gaming therefore you are wrong and gay".
I'm a teenage and I like metal and gaming, therefore you are correct I suppose. But I do also like other genres of music. I would hardly say that metal is the only thing I like. It's just the one that I happen to like the most.
But not all that much over my second place genre, electronica.

I don't know. Metal generally is quite mainstream for at least 15 years now, at least from what i observe in everyday life, on streets of my city. It's more often used in different advertisements, and pretty much every 'teenage' centred product tries to tie itself to metal.
Not my genre tho, i find it boring and the supposed 'subculture' of metalheads as uninspiring, hardly different from pop culture in general.
Oh man where do you live? Everything where I live, and on TV, Is all about pop and rap, Its KILLS me

Anyway I like metal, Not as much as classic rock though

Be honest with you, I like almost anything with a guitar. Metal is no exception. Now, when you get into The foo fighters and the red hot chili peppers, That's where I lose interest. Oh, and Prog rock.

I like a lot of stuff.

I actually find myself listening to metal less and less lately.
Yeah, this. Back in high school I was good friends with a lot of metalheads (almost all of which were into games, and all of which were middle class white kids, just saying), and that's when I got into it. I was never determined enough to, like, read band bios or even really learn what albums my favorite songs were from. So now that I'm in the heart of Atlanta without my walking metal encyclopedias to fill me in, I've not been listening to a lot of the stuff.

Judging by this site, and some of the other gamers I knew, I'd say J-pop is even more prevalent.

This is a hell of a lot of speculation though, lol. My point is: METAL FUCKING RULES!!!! XD

I saw Porcupine tree live in concert. Every song was exactly the same. This is the same case with most songs I hear.

I say it because it is what I hear. Just like you probably hear music I like and think it whiny and emo, when most of it isn't at all.

Its what I hear based on my own likes and dislikes.

I wouldn't class me as a metalhead (I'm more of a punk), but I do love a nice rock sound track as long as it fits the game.

Although that being said I think one of the best soundtracks to a game I ever heard (while playing of course) was the one for Dreamfall. Very chilled, ambient music.

Metal though in a lot of cases is quite aggressive so it works well for a game featuring a lot of violence.

Metal is amazing, and video games are very fun. They are the perfect combination. Best example is Brutal Legend in my opinion

Apart from the crossover of the young, white, middle-class demographic, I'd say it's because metal is about being badass.

Viking folk metal + Torchlight marathon = serious killing time =)

Yes. I love Metal, but it's not my favorite genre. I like rock, regular plain rock. None of that pretentious "sub-genre" naming bullshit for me. But, I can see how video games and metal go hand-in-hand when pumping yourself up. They're both, for the most part, face paced and exiting. I could see how video games also appeal to metal heads seeing as they both target the same audience.
