If they tempered with 3D, there's a good chance they try to make a new 3d console. I, for one, am sure that whatever they plan to unveil won't be well receive. I don't see 3D being the next step in gaming or TV anytime soon.

Oh yeah? What is this one gonna be called...the Virgin? The WiiWii? The Condom?

Hope that they choose a proper name this time.

Considering Nintendo's shift towards the upstream, I am honestly not suprised by Sakamoto-san's words. Infact, I will be more suprised if Nintendo's next console doesn't blow us away (by that I mean in a positive way).

If the Wii can be described as the NES of this generation, Nintendo's next console can probably be described as the SNES of the next generation....meaning it is probably better in every way imaginable.

I am not much of a console person, but I am still really looking forward to seeing what kind of piece of hardware Nintendo has managed to devise.

EDIT:

It would be pretty funny if Nintendo suddenly launched a "hardcore" console with amazing graphics that easily beat even the PS3's, and at the same time they kept selling and supporting the Wii for families and cheap motion control gaming, so really have 2 different consoles out at once with two totally different focuses, and 2 different sources of income.

I highly doubt that's what will actually happen though, just wishful thinking. :p
You have no idea how very likely it is for your prediction to come true. Let me put it this way...."still supporting the Wii" is the only wrong part.
No, in fact it's pretty brilliant in a way. The hardcore won't play WII because... I don't recall anyone spending more time than a hour on it. They'll keep dishing out Family games with the WII to scratch the itch of the casual (and making money in the process) and Work on next gen game on the newest console (while making f'k ton of cash with us). It would be also the best thing to do for Nintendo in case their next platform is a bust.

I have only two ideas about what this possibly could be.
1.) HD 3D glasses free motion control that you can control anywhere or 2.) virtual reality disc a giant orb that you can jump in roll around on a set position and see everything.

Chances are it is neither of those and I am just a lunatic. Either way I can't wait.
Quick, we need 50cc of reality stat! WE ARE LOSING HIM!

3D mean 3D TV and while the technology is available, I doubt people would want to replace their HD Tv for it. Also, if they did, Sony would laugh their pants off. Who do you think have the tech to make them? Toshiba? Emericson? One of the biggest TV making company is still Sony. I don't think so. Also, the price point would be more then 799$ on lauch and that would be disastrous (I bet around 999$ to 1299$ without the TV)

And virtual bubble!?!?! You are forbidden to watch Sci-fi ever again!

Everyone calm down. I can guarantee it won't be coming out until at least 2012. Say what you want about the Wii, but Nintendo set out to make a console that would reach out to people who had previously dismissed gaming, and it did just that. We all talk about accepting casual gamers, expanding the medium, and becoming accepted as a mainstream form of entertainment, but Nintendo is the only developer that is consistantly trying new things and expanding the market. Also, Nintendo, after all these years, is STILL making the BEST GAMES OF THE GENERATION.

Ahhhh yes ... but will I be shaking my head in disgust while my jaw is on the floor. A minor detail that makes all the difference.

Isn't that totally subjective?
Or did you mean that strictly from a marketing standpoint?

It sounds like Nintendo have given up trying to make middle-aged housewife's lose weight and resorted directly to force-feeding them.

i'll just say this...the 3DS is a small taste test of things to come. It's bigger and more impressive brother. That is my guess. I think they have found a way to create stunning crisp, clean HD graphics without the need of Blu-Ray (somehow) and it will be in 3D without glasses. and its another guess of mine that you will be able to use the 3DS with the new Console. Much like the GBA did with Gamecube, only a lot more usage and function.

All of that may sound unlikely..but think about it. It would need to be something THAT unbelievable, THAT impressive to make peoples mouths drop. I doubt its VR because the technology to do that right is still to primitive and there are still health risks. and holographs would probably look like crap too so it wont be that either. If motion controls are still being utilized. my guess is that they will create a much better apparatus for it that is more stylish , more function and with smoother movement. More-so than the Wii Motion Plus.

Anyway, that is what I hope for. That and a better name than "Wii" the name which damn near made me not want to get that console to begin with. I would also like to see a super stylish console shell design.
