If Nintendo can learn from its mistakes and improve on the 1 shortfall that the last 3 generations of Nintendo consoles lacked then they could dominate the casual and hardcore. I'm talking about the processing and graphics power of there machines. The Wii hit a home run with there fun of the casual controls and more physical game play but the limited hardware of the Wii prevents 3rd party developers from making games for the system because they have to cut a lot out of a Wii version to get it to work.
Nintendo are amazing when it comes to making games that everyone can play and there's no reason they can't keep doing that but by going cheap on hardware they are distancing themselves from Sony and Microsoft (and thus the hardcore) and for game makers trying to make serious non casual games, Nintendo isn't going to get a lot of ports.
Really do we need to bring this out again. N64 topped PSX in everything but storage media and while that lost them some high profile games (FFVII)it did have advantages. GCN has specs that fluctuate around the XBOX1 (GPU in particular)and destroy the PS2. Their major mistakes were marketing, online and again... storage media (however it did stop piracy to an extent).
Fact: Nintendo has nearly as many "hardcore" 1st party releases this gen as Micosoft or Sony.
