Most of you didn't get the point of this thread.

Anyway, the two quotes really refer to different kinds of change, when you look at their context.

MGS4 is referring to how technological changes have lead to guerrilla warfare becoming far more common than conventional warfare, with enemies unclear and the battlefield far more complex. That battlefield also has a greater potential for terror and the death of innocents. In short, it means that "war has worsened".

Fallout 3, meanwhile, is referring to the undying nature of human aggression. It's not meant to mean "war is exactly the same every time". It's not, and no one would say that. Every war differs from every other war. But FO3 was really meaning to point out that the core of aggression remains the same, or that "war never stops", but that phrase doesn't have the same ring to it.

And in my view, both are right, except FO3 could have given a less pessimistic message, particularly if sough to be a meaningful and purposeful game. But no, it didn't want to make people think. It wanted to make people enjoy.

God bless America! And no one else!

I'll have to go with MGS's view on war. It has changed quite a bit.

Ha, Voyager references.

Do quotes from myself count?

"Lincoln SMASH!"
-Birras, after (ironically) slaughtering the Temple of the Union with the Lincoln Repeater.

"Tunnel Snakes suck, *****."
-Birras, after killing Butch in the Trouble on the Homefront quest.

"Oh God,I need to get out of *screams* Where the hell am I? I just got an Email from my own brain? No, brain, I do not like it better here. I thought you were on my side! *begins sobbing*"
-Birras, raiding Vault 92 (I think it was 92. It was the one where you would occasionally be warped into a different location with a purple filter on your vision.)(By the way, that's all entirley true. I am easily scared when I am half-asleep, as I was when playing Fallout 3 at 2 A.M.)

"What? I can't murder children? What kind of a sandbox game is this!?!"
-Birras, after discovering he can't murder children and wear their undersized clothing like in Deadrising.
How much bigger of an ego can you get when your quoting yourself.

The Fallout 3 one is more realistic. The point of war has always been to gain some advantage over your enemy.

When I quote myself quoting myself.

"Lincoln SMASH!"
-Birras, after (ironically) slaughtering the Temple of the Union with the Lincoln Repeater.
-Birras, after quoting a time in the game Fallout 3 wherein he murdered a settlement of slaves with the weapon of a historical abolitionist.

See? It's way more arrogant!

Fundamentally, War will never change.

There's always a cause and there's always a conclusion - a beginning and an end.
In between the beginning and end is always conflict of some scale.
This formula is defining.

I like the FO3 quote better because it more aptly identifies the function rather than the variables.
Be it Sticks and Rocks or Rifles and Nukes, the core function remains the same.

Sending out Birras-a-grams on Xbox live. And yes, he has. Although, to be fair, I always respond with Oranna-ma-grams.

War never changes. It'a always a horrible mess that gets a lot of people killed and a lot of resources wasted. But that being said I do believe that there can be good in why you fight. There are a lot of evil people in the world and you have to stand up for yourself and for what's right.

You can't murder children? I can be the scourge of humanity and shit down people's throats...but I can't kill children.
Simplist solution. Nuke Megaton. There that's two dead right there.

For some, war can simply be a method to defend your homeland from invaders. Which means for them, it is not about an advantage, it is about keeping what is theirs.

also,
[HEADING=2]"So, you like to play Castlevania?"[/HEADING]
That is all.

Actually, MGS4's "war has changed" is refering to the fact that within the game world, war's aren't fought over ideologies or beliefs, but for the war economy. "Proxy" war's if you will. Has nothing to do with technology or tactics.

Whatever; I was still right about the core meaning: "war has worsened". As in, it is not morally excusable these days. Anyway, what I said is still the belief of that game's main designer.

yeah cause any of us surviving a nuclear war is completely plausible.
In my opinion, none of those to are remotely possible, maybe 100 years from now, sure we'll have power suits by then. The most realistic apocalypse game(I count MGS because it is) is Left 4 Dead, probably thats not who would survive.
