Am I the only one who read that quote as Microsoft actually meaning more like they were in the context of challenging the stereotype that the "majority" have had with gamers for years? The angle they're going with Kinect further backs up that context, they want it to appeal to everybody (coughwiicough, sorry, had to) and they said it to illustrate that point.
That's exactly how I read it, it seems like he's saying gamers aren't sweaty 30 year old metallica lovers.
Which is exactly what they meant. Only, the internet hate machine got a hold of it and twisted it to their liking, took offense to a blank stare and is responding in turn.
Agreed ofcourse... This happens way too often when people don't take a second to think of the context something is said and go straight to the bitching.
This is because, sadly, most people who self-identify as a gamer (or as whatever their hobby is), are idiots.
As much as I hate to have that opinion, it's really true. I feel like an elitist thinking stuff like that about people, but I can't help it. 99% of the comments I see on gaming forums is just spewing shit. I get tired of it, I find myself not wanting to bother most of the time now but figured I'd make a point in this thread anyway (which has sadly flown over without much notice).

Ridiculous. I'd never wear a Metallica T-Shirt.

Also I doubt Microsoft actually knows their customers. They remind me of Yuri Orloff in Lord of War...
Great movie, great comparison.

"Gaming's not just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts," quipped Microsoft's regional entertainment tzar at yesterday's lifestyle event, David McLean. The audience of fashion editors and lifestyle doyens yukked it up appreciatively, but we couldn't believe our ears. That's it? That's what you're reducing a huge percentage of your audience to now - a one-liner gag to make the cheap-seats feel it's okay to waddle about in front of their television sets?

Wow...just wow Microsoft. Way to perpetuate gross and out-dated stereotypes about your core audience.
... PR failure right there.

I wonder what they call a quality PR department.
LOL

OP: That's bullshit. To even refer to customers as such is the move of either some REALLY rich corporation *Pushes Microsoft into the spotlight* or a REALLY shitty PR team *Pushes Microsoft back into the spotlight after walking out of it*.

Or they're just trippin' on acid.

Peace~

When the guy said it he probably didn't think it was that big of deal. I don't really think it is that important. Unless maybe it strikes a little too close to the truth for some people...?

I'm kidding, only kidding.

You people are all tools every single one of you. Get off of the Microsoft Hate-Bandwagon.

You SHOULD read this as a compliment. The line reads defying the stigma that THE PUBLIC applies to you, not Microsoft. Unless you are arguing that you are indeed a fat sweaty 30 something metallica t shirt wearing ingrate and are some how being offended by this.

Look at the context.
"Gaming's not just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts"

Lemme break it down for you.
If it read "Gaming's just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts" I wouldn't be posting this. And your hatemachine would be right. But there is some strong Keywordage in there known as the word NOT.

So, yes, please continue to hate microsoft on baseless internet hatemachine tactics and CONTINUE to define the stigma that in fact you all are sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts.
You do realize that by saying that, they are, in fact, insulting everyone who disagrees the company's new direction. They are, in fact, saying that the millions that voice their disapproval fall under the category of the "sweaty thirty-year-olds in Metallica t-shirts" stereotype. It is an unnecessary, baseless insult (like, say, calling everyone that opposes your opinion a bunch of tools) to a huge chunk of their consumers, making your argument completely void.
Lol, no, its baseless hate for a reason of promotion.
Lets pretend it was never said.
Kinect would get released.
Moms and Dads looking for family friendly gaming wouldn't buy it assuming its another tool used by the "silly gamers". Hardcore gamers don't want it because it's going to be marketed toward casual interfacing.
All I can really say is get over yourselves.
Your logic makes no sense what so ever. If Moms and Dads didn't buy tools used by "silly gamers" then why the hell the the Wii sell like freaking hotcakes up until 2009?

And another hole in your point, if this wasn't said Moms and Dads wouldn't buy it anyways. It's essentially confirmed $150 price tag takes care of that.

People are pissed off not because they're promoting Kinect, but because they are promoting Kinect at the hardcore audiences' expense. They're mad at the generalization of gamers that Microsoft is conveying to it's wanted 'casual' audience. TheDrunkNinja was on point when he told you that your arguement was void.

I love your quote right here:

It make me chuckle because you didn't get the context yourself.

Look at the context again.
"Gaming's not just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts"

If the word just was never used, then this would not be an issue, but that single word there spells it out for you. Miscrosoft's David McLean thinks that hardcore gamers are just sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica T-Shirts.

It's called the English language, and you might want to get a grip on it if your going to talk about context.

Thats a straight up lie, I am a 20 year old in an At The Gates T shirt, and I have never called myself a hardcore gamer. I prefer video game enthusiast.
I see you are a connoisseur of one of the finer things in life.

Microsoft, stop shooting yourself in the foot.
