People who say that Xbox hardware failures simply come down to bad luck are kidding themselves. Microsoft had AWFUL quality control when it came to the manufacturing of the original Xbox, and the situation hasn't gotten any better for the 360.

I'm not going to touch on the other points because they're not necessarily universal concerns. For example, the lack of mods isn't something I'd consider to be a problem. If you're in the market for a console, chances are good that you don't care much about mods, and modding support probably wouldn't weigh heavily in your decision to choose one console over another. If you want mods, you play PC games -- that's how it's always been.

The other concerns you mentioned don't exactly seem unique to MS or the Xbox system or Live by any means.

But when it comes to the hardware issue, then I can agree with you. There's NO excuse for the rate of failure of Xbox systems.

To be fair, the 360 is nearing the end of its life cycle so it makes sense just to milk the suckers for every last bit of cash before sending them off to buy a new Xbox

I just hate the Xbox for:
- Lack of interesting titles: How many Xbox exclusives aren't about gunning down enough people to count as a war crime?
- It being notorious for failure: I don't think I've known anybody who's N64 stopped working before it was over 15 years old.
- Paid online: Are you shitting me? You're asking me to pay to have a bunch of racial and homophobic epithets screamed into my ear while I play?
- Racist pre-pubescent assholes: As mentioned, it seems a good 99% of the Xbox owning public belong in the Hitler Youth.

So yes, I would be quite ok with it vanishing from the market.

My original white xbox from release still works fine. I hate how microsoft strangles the developers but in all honesty I has the RROD one one and occasion; and it was fixed by punching it.

Oh your a cute little one aren't you? Did you Dad let you have a day out from under that bridge?

OT: If you don't like MS and want their next console to fail then try get everyone who agrees with you to actually stand for something and not buy their stuff. At least console wise if that is where you have a problem.

For some reason gamers find it hard to stick to their morals as consumers. I am aware games aren't the be all and end all but when we can't even organise a proper boycott where everyone sticks to it. I am talking about the steam group for MW 2 boycott despite being 1% of the boycott had appalling follow through.

LoL Console Gamers... They will never learn
Quoted for Truth, Thanks for reinforcing my argument, seriously Console Gamers? why you know move to Card Games... ???
Haha nice; my message there was simple enough. No platform is better than another. At any point hardware can become shot, due to lack of care, attention or luck; for PS3, Xbox or PC. We've all had PC problems, we've all heard about PS3 problems and we are all well aware of 360 problems.

...and we all know how crap the Wii is at being a doorstop; my door keeps pushing it along. Piece of crap's better as a paperweight.

EDIT: Hmm, interesting - I got put on probation for a low-content post... I don't get it though, I make a memebase LoL with my opinion on it and post it, and that's low content post? If anything that's good content!!

Free? You really expect XBLive to be free? It costs a hell of a lot of money to run, you know.
This is the only bit I don't agree with in your argument. Microsoft makes a ridiculous amount of its revenue from XBL from what I can see. Take that from the recent CES press conference MS said they had 40mil subscribers to XBL now I forget if they specified Gold members so this is a bit of speculation so work with me. If even just 1/2 of those are Gold members that means over a 6 month period MS makes $50*20*10^6 = $ 1000 *10 ^6. Now given that over the 6 month period from last year to Dec 31st MS had a total revenue of around 40,000 * 10^6(rounded up) that is 1/40 of the total company's revenue from 1 service alone.

Now, 1/40 may not seem like a lot but when you take it that XBL income is more or less guaranteed compared to other aspects of the company. This was also taken from the 2nd half where sales would be higher.

What are you really getting from the £40? A P2P online gaming service, Sky channels(which you need to pay for else where), video chat, facebook, twitter, last fm and music from zune. If that is worth £40 a year to you and the other subscribers that is fine and I've no problem with that. However, MS is hardly reaching into the depths of their pockets to provide this service. I mean nothing on that list does not have a free easy to use alternative already out there existing in the market place and I'd be willing to accept the price more on one condition.

If MS splashed out on some self run official dedicated servers for some of the games then I could maybe get behind the price. Other than that in my own opinion from what I have experienced of XBL the price tag is not worth it just for the online gaming service that I experience. For me no dedis is a deal breaker. Unfortunately they have no caught on yet on the 360 and there are only a few examples of games that have bothered to include them which is very sad.

Not part of the argument.

I forgot to mention that in my last post that a lot of 360 problems are sorted by just taking care of your console. I got 1 at launch and it managed to last me until the slim came out and I kept it well ventilated and not sitting on the floor picking up dust and I also have tiles so no crap from the carpet either.

Xbox LIVE costs money because Microsoft like money and we keep giving them money. Simple as.

It's not a scam. It's just good business. If you really care, stop arguing and start boycotting.

Next gen microsoft NEEDS to lose the race because they are literally keeping gaming in the dark ages with their selfish tactics. In a perfect world everyone would buy games only for the pc so developers / consumers can enjoy freedom and the biggest hurdle for developers would not be the money to make the games, but only their creativity.

What is there to defend about the 360 other then brand loyalty?
I wouldn't defend the console based on the brand. I'm sorry for your experiences which are far worse than mine considering how much more persistent you've been. I couldn't go through 4 hardware changes. I had one go red ring, replaced it with the Forza 3 special ed. with 250gb hdd a couple of years back and it's been fine since then. It's down to which chipset you have...any console in the last two/three years shouldn't suffer from the rrod issues.

I had my live account hacked. I had £140 of charges made against my credit card which was spent on games and what have you. I phoned and phoned and phoned and after an investigation they said nothing fraudulent was done, even though the fact was that it clearly had. I cancelled my live account immediately, removed my card from the account and vowed never to spend another penny on the service. They "refunded" me the unused time remaining on my account but made a mistake, giving me a code for free 12, 3 and 1 month, so I added them back on for 15 months, but truthfully, haven't been on in so long. I haven't updated to the latest dashboard with the ads.

Microsoft have to make money, I understand that. But they made money from me by stealing it...refusing to refund me when I'd informed them that the transactions were fraudulent. They made money from you by supplying faulty hardware...4 times. They should be making money by providing services and goods people want and are happy to pay for...but that frequently isn't the case.

But don't worry about MS in the next generation. We already know nintendo has it's next gen console in later stages of development. The 360/PS3 are so old in the tooth a basic computer today outperforms them many times over, let alone what we know will be a powerful HD platform as Nintendo have gone on record as saying. With their innovative controllers, hardware that will poo all over the competition who are too lazy sucking to develop next gen hardware, exclusive, first and third party titles and price point, Nintendo will OWN the next generation. Even if MS and Sony announced today they were working on a new console, it would be too late to beat the big N.

And another one who has theirs on most the day for that past 3 years. Is very loud though...
I like the loud. Lets me know it's always working. I have had two Xboxs. The first one RROD on me after the first year and when I called Microsoft it to see if they could replace it they told me it wouldn't be for free so that sucked. So I will give you that one. Then I just bought a second one and that has been working for nearly 3 years. There getting better.

With the new patch we are bombarded with advertisements, and they have the guts to raise the price on live for something which really should be free. You have to have an active live account to have access to "perks" like netflix (thats a JOKE) and live ruined any communication with their community with their games. Just look at the sorry state of the dungeon defender dlc, microsoft acts like bloody money grubbing tyrants and just look at how it ruins games that thrive on dlc like l4d or team fortress 2. You cannot mod ANY game on the 360, which makes people who bought skyrim on the 360 insanely jealous of all the fun the pc community gets to have with user created content. Microsoft simply does not ALLOW us access to it because it contradicts their ideals.
What are u talking about? People mod on Xbox. Its not as easy to do as PC and a much SMALLER amount of people do it, but there are mods on Xbox. Mod mean "Modification". That includes Jtag Cheats, Host Booting, or even minor things like Moding uniquely Colored Amor(My friend did), or even Moding an account to trick the system into letting u use DLC. Uhm.. Not that I have done that.

Two separate examples. Both from Halo, but CoD and Gears(& others) have mods aswell.

Ive had my Xbox since 09 and it works fine. My first Controller though, well its left Joystick fucked up on me. Not sure how to explain it. On my Second controller now. Hell my Brother is still on his First Xbox and First Controller, which he got back in 2005. I still can't believe both his controllers still work 0_o.

If you think that Xbox should die why do you keep buying their consoles and products? It mildly annoys me when people complain about something but can't see that the only way to fix said 'exploitative' problem is to boycott the manufacturer.

Every other console manufacturer offers almost the same features for free. Many of the features they offer are actually p2p services and therefore cost them excactly nothing. Others like Netflix are run by external developers. You by far overestimate the costs they have.

Then you have somehow been breaking them or buying broken ones.
I have had the same Xbox for about 3 years now and have had no problems with it at all. I am still using it now with no problems and it is working fine.

I got my Xbox 360 from my little brother, and save to say, he did'nt really take care of it,
he smokes like a furnace, indoors without proper ventilation and his hygiene leaves many many questions.
Also, his track record with electronics is astounding, things die around him.
Quickly.

(but hey, family right?)

As so, i appreciated the gesture and i cleaned it up, noticed it survived for 5 years of such abuse, and aside from a rumbling sound, it runs perfectly, plays games, music, video's etc.

So actually, i am astonished by this machine.

The paying for playing online is a tad weird to me too, beeing a Sony player mainly,
but hey, what is, is.

I've literally never had a problem I couldn't solve by turning it off and on again, so I'm keeping my mine.
