Singapore, unfortunately. Funny enough, I got a Military Training summons from Malaysia as well, which is only for 3 months. But if I do that, I am effectively banned from returning to Singapore for the rest of my life.
hmmmm... well im from the uk, and if i didn't want to be conscripted (and my degree wasn't enough) i would leave. that said i can move to new zealand which i love, has family, and feel slike home.

i don't know, if you just don't play their game (never run, always be late, don't do their punishments) what's the worst they can do?

A $10000 fine, and up to 3 years in jail.

They take this crap too seriously.

An arrow?

Joking aside.

Depends on your military.

I was British Army and our basic training revolved a lot around fitness, drill, *classroom* work (going over military history, roles, ranks, weapon care, field tactics and the like), weapon work, field training and a few none live firing exercise's.

Also depends on what part of the military they slap you in (we get to choose).

I was in the Para's and our physical training is a complete *****.

If I was you, and your knee injury does hinder your day to day life, I would get it looked at and see what can be done.

Have to admit though I thought conscription had been done away with in most countries. I do know there are some that require a couple of years service though.

A knee injury should get you a PES C (or equivalent, they seem to have switched to sub cats of B now) but don;t expect much. The best you may get is lighter duties than most.

My advice to you is to highlight your knee injury to the MO during medical checkup and present a doctors' letter. The doctor's letter is important, cause these MOs face hundreds of guys a year and have no time to tell the keng (fake) from the real cases. There is no real way to beat the system and most of the regulars can tell if you are really hurting.

If you do end up in combat, take pride in it! Those outside the system have more respect for combat units - the less heard about the better.

If you end up in administration, good on you. But it's still a slough, albeit in a different way.

Hope this helps.

To late for that. I'm due to report in 11 hours.

My medical checkup was in January this year, long gone. Those guys gave me a B, not because of my knee, but because I broke my nose. How the hell does that make sense?!

No need for that. Just edit some space between paragraphs. It does wonders.

No arrow, just a dragon. Anyway, I'm definitely not going for the Paratroopers... deathly afraid of heights, though you wouldn't guess it if you know me (Mountain Climber, Bungee Jumper...) and not Navy either, because I get seasick really easily.

Guess I'm stuck with Ground Infantry... the one which dies the most. Sigh...

Want out? Masturbate furiously. No, seriously.

A guy in my company decided he wanted out during Basic. He started masturbating everywhere and with enormous vigor. Out in the field? Fapfapfap. Inspection? Fapfapfap. Anywhere, any time, any audience. He was sent to the shrink and started fapping in the waiting room while staring intently at a female assistant who was doing paperwork.

He was out of the army within 30 minutes of that.
Now, I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a Full Metal Jacket quote or an original story.

Just be glad it's not North Korea's 6 years under Emperor Crazy, still Singapore seems like a pretty hard country for conscription... especially that you're not given an alternative.

What category is your B? The PES C status has been absorbed into B, so the first two or three levels really mean PES B for combat duty - if memory serves me well. EDIT: PES B is the same as A, just that you're not in 'perfect' condition.

And try to avoid going to the MO at night. The MO on duty is usually in a foul mood, so unless you feel like death is knocking on your door, or your sarge makes you, hang on till morning.

Not a clue. One of the higher ones I think. Give me a break, it was 11 months ago!

Also, my cousin and his mates are the current MOs on duty there. =P So I might be able to sneak off a bit now and then.

If you have medical papers on your knee injury, I guess you could either get out or get a nice posting (like some mentioned).

As far as nightmares.. I don't really have that much experience since I was in the naval defence and then in the coast guard as posting. It was just 8 weeks of basic training, and it was pretty ok..

I found that the only bad thing in the military for my part was constant cleaning.. Cleaning your room, cleaning your clothes, cleaning your gun, cleaning the common room, cleaning the bathrooms, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning...

(Uhm... Not really native English speaking.. Should that be washing instead of cleaning...?)

Apart from that it was pretty decent..

Sorry, did not intend to troll you. I remember mine quite well though, from A --> D --> E --> B --> C.

That, sir, is the sweetest thing I have heard. Nothing motivates more than the ladies! I was in admin so there was none of that for me.

Considering every 18 year old here goes to the army, none of the locals will be impressed by it.

But if you have people like that where you are, I'll move right over once I get out!

Well it really depends on what you do in the army. There is a huge difference between being a driver and being an combat diver for example.

When i was in the army, i always said that the experience was like a huge pile of stinking shit with some marshmellows in there. You have to swallow it all. Some of it is great, but most of it wants to make you puke. And as you will learn, you have no freedom in the army. You can't think or decide on your own like you probably are used too. So it doesn't matter if you want to swallow all that shit or not. You just have to and you just will do it.

What does that mean for you? Well.. just wait and see. Take it step by step. Always try to overcome the next 5 minutes. Never think about how much time there's still left. It will drive you insane. And try to be as positive as you fucking can. About everything. If it's ice cold, windy, raining and you have to run 10 miles without having eaten anything in the last 30 hours and your feet are bleeding and your knees hurting like hell.. then you should be happy. Because you are lucky enough to get the chance to run and warm yourself up. See what i mean? Only focus on the marshmellows.. never on the stinky shit :) And you will just be fine. The Army is not about muscle and discipline. That comes naturally. What you really need to develop there is a strong character and a solid, positive attitude. Then your time wasted in the army learning shit you hopefully will never have to use was worth it as you will have learned something very important for all walks of life.

It's nothing like the movies. I can't say for sure what you are in for being a different country and all but most solders act like decent human beings, even the ones training you. You might even enjoy yourself. One thing though expect a lot of shouting, doesn't matter what country you are in they is always shouting, then they make you shout, then everyone shouts. No one ever talks in the army they just shout and grunt at each other, you'll get used to it in no time :D
This is true... Well, at least 6 months I was trained it was.

I know we have some military type guys on the forums here, so I wanted to ask about what I can expect from the training.
You can expect a lot early mornings and moderate drills if you already have the lungs for it.
Also, I'd suggest you make a tight schedule on your chores so that you don't get caught with your pants down during a sudden drill.
Please keep in mind though, I was never really conscripted, it was more of a voluntary training thing for me, but I'd wager the physical parts were the same cause it was a Vet training us.

Also, Follow "Knife" and his/her suggestions. A lot of that goes into conscription
