You...don't know what liberal means. And you don't know the difference between Liberal with a capital L, and liberal without. Okay I'll explain:
1. liberal, the word means: open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.
2. Liberal, the political ideal means far-left/progressive and is a reflection of modern times.
Okay so LBJ was a liberal, small l, of his time, meaning he was more open to new opinions and behavior that the conservatives of his time. LBJ was not a Liberal, large L, that you and I know from this time.
The Black Panthers were a militant left-wing/progressive group to help protect black citizens and further Civil rights, through aggressive and sometimes violent means. They were liberals, short l, of their times because they were pushing for new ideas, civil rights.
I'm not sure they would be Liberals, capital L, of this time. I don't know how 60s era African Americans would feel about gay marriage or trans rights. I hope they'd support, but I don't know.
So yes the Black Panthers were liberals of their time, but they may not have been Liberals of our era. And just so you understand liberal, short l, is not inherently political. It just means open to new experiences or ideas. You can be liberal, small l, on ice cream flavors. And I can be liberal, small l, on recasting Tony Stark. We're both liberals, small l. We may not be liberal, small l, about the same thing, but we both qualify.

No, it isn't. Progressivism in America grew directly out of the conservative movement, in opposition to liberalism. People fudge the definitions of things because conflating groups can be politically expedient for them or for their opponents, but these words have roots, and that's the hill that I die on.
