i believe Yahtzee said in his Gears of War review (and i am paraphrasing) that mainstream is mainstream because it is (more or less) good.

thats how it came to be mainstream, because the quality of the design garnered attention and praise and others, viewing that praise in the form of reviews and peer-to-peer recommendations, more and more people began using the product and, if they liked it they told their friends about it and wrote reviews about it and so on and so fourth. what your friend was trying to do was share with you his enjoyment of a game. granted, he could have done it a little more tactfully, but there it is.

as for the mindless sheep part, if you go around thinking people are inferior to you they will detect that in your demeanor. this could adversely affect how you do in school, work, and your social life. my advice is to give people a chance. do not immediately judge that someone is of less intelligence than you are, because believe me: you will find quite a few clever and intelligent people out there who can and will make you pay for underestimating them. whilst there are quite a few more who are complete dumbasses, so i guess it evens out.

2) You know what I find 'sheepier' than these 'consumer masses?' the endless parade of people who jump on the wagon stuffed with people claiming to be better than everyone else because they apparently aren't a consumer slave. Like people who claim to buck the trend by, say, going goth punk, and really all they're doing is joining the ranks of another group of followers.
and also what this person said.

I'd just like to say thanks first of all for all the posts! I know some of you think I'm a complete butt-munch and I guess I somewhat deserve it, and most of you have posted things that have actually helped me chill myself out on this subject. Most of all, thanks for helping me realise that the world isn't run by a groping mass of consumer slaves, but by many individuals who just share a common enjoyment in mainstream media. =)

Peace out.
Dan. :)

Every human being is distinctly different. No body is a mindless sheep, everyone has some type of psyche. That said, society is a machine, and it needs people to act a certain way. So most people comform to fit their role in society so that the world can keep on spining. Some people can fit into this really easily, others cannot.

The mindless sheep are more like people who can either adapt well, are allready like that, or just good at ignoring the world while they suffer for the masses. Non-comformity adds new things that society must deal with, some good, some bad, so either way, how you act will eventually be added to what the mindless sheep believe/do.

Believing the people who adapt are weak willed or w/e is not a very wise thing to do. While you should feel pride in that you are fighting for your niche in life, it doesn't make other people any worse for comforming, as it takes a very strong person to live a life that is uncomfortable for them, but they do it for those around them.

Some can sacrifice, some are fighters, some are just born perfect.

My only response is to wait until your 25 and realize how immature your teenage mind is being right now. *waits 12 years*

Humans are social animals. We want to be part of the group, we want to belong, it's a basic need. The group is strong, but "deviant behaviour" (in your example not liking CoD:BO as much as your friends) threatens the group because it questions the validity of their choices (if you dont like it that much, maybe its not that good after all?). Maybe that is an explanation for the hostility you experienced...

...or your friends are just stupid idiots.
