However, the INSTANT you put your reticle on it, it freezes, turns, and stares at you.

It will continue to stare at you forever, until you look away.

Then it either barrels at you with frightening speed, or, if it's far away enough, it TELEPORTS AT YOU. (No word on if it can teleport up to the balcony your standing on, or if you can piss it off through windows.)

i like to say something. never did it say it kills you or even harms you so they may not be as big a problem as everyone thinks.

This is pretty funny and kind of cool. I like Slenderman as a figure of modern mythology. Unfortunately, I spent so much time building my floating forest island/castles above the endless sea, that I'm just totally over Minecraft. Weeks upon weeks of losing sleep working through the night. Then I finished and realized I had nothing. So I uninstalled.

Sounds like something that'll push me further into the light >.>'

Also regarding pistons? Didn't the modder give Notch/Mojang permission to use Pistons in Minecraft. If that is the case its far from plagerism, its making something a modder has come up with official.

Personally, i'd find it weirder, maybe not creepier, if instead of standing there. They slowly walk to the block next to you, and stare you down.
a three foot monstrosity, towering over you and just staring.

But that would probably diminsih the creepy aspect for most people.

Good thing I just finished my retractable drawbridge to my floating fortress of doom. Now to have it 100% lit. Time to mine lots and lots of glowstone.

Er,
1: It teleports, so you have looked at it, it'll probably get you before the fall kills it.
2: What if you encounter it outside of your fortress of doom territory.

This thing will creep the shit out of me, make me paranoid, and afraid of its existence.

*****, I want this so bad, no monster has ever done that to me.

Ah yeah, more scary at night. It good ya!

But I always thought skeletons were the scary mob not creepers.
I think people are misunderstanding the creeper's name. I would think it's named a creeper because it "creeps along", not because it's creepy. That thing is so damn silent that it creeps up on you if you have your back turned long enough.

Hence, "creeper".

EDIT: Honestly, I think the only way the Enderman could ever pose a threat is if he's one of two things:

Strong, but rare
or
Weak, but numerous.

Strong/rare, he's basically got a lot of health and damage, but only appears once in a blue moon, so you REALLY start swearing if you happen to see him.

Weak/numerous, he's weak and easily killed, but when you see him and look away, he chases you and calls out to all his friends in the area, which there will be a lot of them (maybe they'll travel in packs or something), and then they all chase you.

Really the only way seeing him can ever mean something.

EDIT2: And honestly, what's more likely to kill you?

"Oh shit, I just saw an EM. ok, calm down, back away slowly. slowly... slowly... slo-SSSSSSSSSS

...shit.

No...

So I made it passive until you looked straight at it. And that was scary. Suddenly you could walk up to these looking beasts (they?re three meters tall) and watch them as they moved their blocks around, but as soon as you happened to look straight at them, they?d attack. And by ?straight at them?, I mean putting the reticle on top of them. You can keep them visible on screen and actually look straight at them in real life, but as soon as your in game character looks straight at them, boom.

Still, that was more scary than creepy. It?s like a jump scare in a movie. You know it might happen at any time, and when it happens you freak out a bit. I wanted something a bit more psychological. So to really drive home the point of looking at them being bad, I made the Endermen freeze and turn towards you when you look at them. As long as you look straight at them, they stand perfectly still and look straight at you. As soon as you look away, they will run (very fast) towards you.

And they teleport. If they?re too far away to reach you in a short period of time, they will teleport about once per second. They try to make sure they always teleport to somewhere you can see, as I don?t want to confuse the player as to what is happening.

When they attack, you know it?s your fault.

Emphasis added by me. Please tell me what "attack" might mean that doesn't involve your health falling and you going "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH OMGOMGOMGOMG".

Hell, you know what would be really creepy? If you saw one, then turned and ran, and it teleports in front of you. Scare the living shit out of you, that would.
Read the blog post... they already do. To "help orient the player", apparently.
Indeed they do... but that's just in the general vicinity of where they're looking. I was thinking they could teleport DIRECTLY in front of you, maybe a block or two away. You know, you're running away, and BAM that thing is in your face staring down at you.

That would scare the hell out of me.

although notch did say they're supposed to be more creepy than scary. Pity.

Scariest part.

Last weekend, I started working on a new mob because I was frustrated with the slow progress on some town code I was writing, and for some reason I decided to make yet another creepy one.

I would assume this will make the game a lot scarier, but no doubt Notch has taken balance into consideration too. Whatever happens, it certainly won't do the game any harm in terms of fun

How can you be scared off something that looks like a square and 4 pieces of spaghetti? "Real" Slenderman, fair nuff. But this? Looks like shit ;( Notch should really move it out of java and get this dude to make the models http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDoaSO9nxUQ
I fear you've rather missed the point of the Minecraft aesthetic.
