I built a huge tunnel, completely safe, with lots of torches, but when I turned around a certain corner, there was a creeper there. FFUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

what are those birch looking trees?
A new skin for certain trees added in an update, they work the same as normal trees.

OT: I recently caught a creeper waithing to ambush me on the opposite side of this bridge I was building. I chuckled to myself while shaking my mouse back and forth to make my avatar do the universal "No" headshake. The creeper stared back and shook its head up and down as if to say "Yes".

NO.....oh dear god please no. Up walls?!

Fuck.

As for my scariest, it involved a spider actually. The first night, I had been mucking around during the day so had no coal for torches. My home was a quickly-built fort that I'd modified out of the natural landscape... As I huddled in the darkness staring up at the sky, listening to the spiders and skeletons outside, I began to feel a sense of calm as I could sit here in safety.

SUDDENLY SPIDER. The fucker dropped out of nowhere onto my face, as I was staring upwards.

Seeing one of those scary motherfuckers literally spring out of the night sky hissing at you made me jump like.... I don't know, it was terrifying :(
Similiar thing happened to me.

On my first ever day, I was generally exploring and picking up dirt and sand. I'd made no picks or anything, because, oddly, I had found no trees.
As night fell I really quickly put together a house, and had to sit there. In pitch darkness.
So I dug a whole in my roof, and placed dirt around it so nothing could jump in.
It worked, and I was staring at the night, waiting until I could move freely again.
But then I got paranoid of Zombies, so I filled in the block just incase.

After a few more minutes, I wondered whether it was daylight yet, so, cautiously, I dug out a dirt block.
I couldn't see, so I didn't realise it was on ground level, and I dug it two spaces wide.
Exactly the measurements a Spider needs to get at you.
You can guess what happened next.
8 glowing red eyes were all I saw, and the screeching was all I heard as I was mauled by the creature.

that would stop any spiders from climbing, but things can now spawn ontop of hte lip and it will shelter any creatures beneath. important note, spiders cannot climb sand or sandstone.
On top? Even if it's well lit? 0.0

How can a game with such low-res graphics be so goddamn terrifying. Horror epitomised ^_^

if it's lit they won't spawn, but i didn't realise this till a creeper spawned ontop.

also, it seems the spawn setting got turned up. before i could go to any of my bases in complete saftey, since the update a creeper has spawned in my castle and a spider in my 100% sealed off sea-pyramid.

Whew. That's something, at least....

Birch trees. Added back when the game entered beta.

Go exploring beyond what you already have, man!

Most scared I've been in minecraft was when I got lost in a huge cave complex under my base. Took me 3 hours to find my way out.
Since then I mark the way out with staircases or double torches.

Also, this fits the thread nicely:

Once I had made a huge network of tunnels inside a mountain. One night another player was lost way afar from his building and he hid inside mine. Problem was he left the door open and in came 'a legion of SPIDERSSSSS.' (bravo to the one who can see the refrence)anyways I used 5 minutes just running from spiders in the tunnels while they picked away my health little by little.
Dr. Smith and the Nostalgia Critic are disappointed with your misappropriation of Lost In Space quotes.

HEART ATTACK! I EVEN SAW IT COMING!

See, the best horror games are the ones with the fewest sound cues.

...SERIOUSLY?

What, did it then teleport into your face, through your monitor and murder your loved ones?!

This is the nightmare fuel that Cracked lives off of...

I gotta get this game.
I was looking into it, but ended up with something else instead.

I really want to build a castle overlooking a bay, and then build a boat and travel to the ends of the earth.
That will take a while. The game map is eight times the size of Earth.

lower res graphics force players to imagine the scary factor of what they are facing. Its why the old AVP games are so fucking terrifying.

I quit playing for a bit and when I returned the creeper was gone. Shortly after that incident I was leaving my house on a mountain when a creeper drop on top of me from the roof. Nothing is more horrifying than seeing a massive green penis descending upon you.

IT KNOWS WHERE YOU LIIIIIIIVE!

But are you sure it nodded? If so, Notch may end up being the next master of psychological horror and fourth-wall breaking. (Not off that incident alone, but if he expands on it...)

I'm beginning to feel more and more like the only person that isn't scared by this game

...and everyone I know who's scared of it is a complete pansy and acts like a douche whenever I mention it

in short- I don't understand how this is scary, stop trying to convince me it is
and go play amnesia and make sure you don't crap yourself (because if minecraft scares you... dang that's sad)
Okay, I won't try to convince you. Keep playing it as a fun little world builder.

I'll just show you the exact moment that pants are crapped:
<youtube=L_S_7DRfCow>

Surely you can see why some might find the game a bit nerve wracking.

(Thanks, Andantil!)

Yeah it's not that the game is scary, it's just surprising. You think everything's good then BAM ENEMY! Just like that vid.
