On several occasions, I've nearly had a heart attack when I hear a Skeleton arrow fly past.

Also, I can attest to the horror of being trapped deep underground with no idea how to get out.

My scariest moments all involve spiders. Usually, it involves unseen caverns above me while exploring caves and then *BAM* out of nowhere, a spider drops down and pounces. You can hack and slash all you want but they will still kill you. I lost a diamond sword that day :(

A creeper you catch somewhere so that he cant get to you, then keep him there as a pet.

EDIT: @ Nick angelici "what do you mean, "pet Creeper"?"
messed up quote thing

I completely agree, I think Minecraft can be one of the scariest games. I'm always afraid to go into a new dark cave and I don't know why but it's the only game where I'm afraid to fall down. In other games it sucks if I fall down, because I lose health but in Minecraft I actually get that really strange feeling, like I'm really falling down.

I remember one night, when I went outside and it was still night. I looked around and didn't see any enemies, so I went to gather some wood and returned. Suddenly FIVE creepers came around the corner of my house. That sight scared the shit out of me. I tried to run away but they blew up and killed me. When I returned I saw that half of my wall was missing and instead there was a really big crater on my lawn. This wasn't the only time when a creeper has blown himself up on my lawn. I covered up all the craters there, but if I would take off the top layer of my lawn, it would look like a battlefield, where the soldiers had used too many grenades.

Spider death from above is bad, but if there's one thing worse it's being pinned down by a Skeleton in an unexplored cave somewhere above you. I spent hours trying to get past one of those things once in what was pretty much a worse case scenario - full inventory of good loot, limited torches and picks, no wood to make new ones, and deep down so there was lava on all sides.

Damn those bony snipers.

Agreed, walking outside when day hits only to have 2 spiders drop in front of you is scary.

Also the adrenaline of running away from a creeper is insane

I've spent too much time on FPSs recently and now I keep looking looking for the Sprint button.

Or when you're unexpectedly cornered and find yourself flailing away with whatever happens to be in your hand at the time. I once tried to beat a spider to death with a block of wool. It didn't end well.

Oh dear god.
Unfortunately I don't have a copy of minecraft to call my own, but every time I go to a friend's house we'll play with the two copies he has on two seperate PCs.

My worst encounter was my first day. I was blissfully unaware of ANYTHING dangerous in Minecraft, so I just went on a lengthy stroll. When the sun started going down I looked to my friend's PC and he'd already built himself a two story turret fort out of wood. He saw me and glanced as my screen and proceeded to say "Oh fuck! Dig, man, DIG!!".

I spent my first night in a hole in the sand, the sound of zombies echoing from above eerily.

It's surely only a matter of time before Notch introduces the ultimate horror... imagine if there was a monster that could dig...
If you get the Mo' Creatures mod ogres can break through blocks and will dig straight down if you're a few blocks under.

OT:After spending 3 minecraft days building an underwater base, I left to get more materials and returned to see a giant squid sitting in my front room. Granted they don't activley hunt you but it's still horrific.

As many Minecrafters will tell you, this is a surprisingly scary game. The sheer randomness of the world means you have literally no idea of what might be around the next corner, and if you have ever found yourself deep underground with no clear exit and a dwindling supply of torches you'll know just how scary that can be.

Well, it just got a little, or a lot, scarier. As of the latest update spiders can climb up walls.

Yeah, those castle walls you've built? Not so safe now, are they?

For discussion: what's been your scariest moment in Minecraft? I'd say mine would be one of my first nights above ground, when I'd built a little cabin on a hill but made the mistake of not having any torches. The horde of monsters that ammassed around outside the cabin that night, and the noise of them all was quite nerve wracking.
Oh that is NOTHING. Notch will add a zombie siege mode where there is a chance of a zombie invasion during the night which makes the moon turn blood red. Think "no prob"? Well i didn't tell you zombies can BREAK THROUGH WALLS AND DOORS AND INFILTRATE YOUR BASE UNTIL MORNING. You have to survive that hell night if it gets implemented.
I dont see that zombie invasion thing happening.. the world is random, how would the game know which structure was yours? whats stopping me from building a giant 64 block tower? or burrowing into the ground?
Simple, you set the player as way point for zombies to come to you. Players reside mostly in their base, no?
Sure, but again, how would they get to me 50 blocks up?
Depends on what you define as 50 blocks up. Is it on a mountain or just a line of blocks you put under yourself as a tower?
a straight up tower, one block wide, like a beacon tower.

im all for that, as long as he makes the combat better. it's really the worst part of the game. its fun, but pretty bad atm, you shouldn't force the player into it.

I basically turned my main house into a dungeon. Even though its well lit on the bottom, monsters and a lot of them spawn on top and fall. Nothing like going to get new tools and turning around to see multiple creepers and zombies on all sides. Also, the spiders always creep me out because I hear them before I see them.

Every second spent in the natural caverns under my building was a nightmare. Its like those caves were bloody possessed!
I... I have heard rumors... That Notch may do an update... That makes caverns change. The "Earthquake" Factor, that at random points, the whole earth shakes and random bits in the cave that are as weak as crumbled rock or weaker are destroyed, where they land they build themselves up, theoretically making new tunnels.

I'm beginning to feel more and more like the only person that isn't scared by this game

...and everyone I know who's scared of it is a complete pansy and acts like a douche whenever I mention it

in short- I don't understand how this is scary, stop trying to convince me it is
I guess it's more a paranoia that get you on as mobs sound knows no bound and makes it troublesome to locate before you died in few hits or one explosion. While in the caves, you lose your sense of direction and gets irritating to find the exit, well that part is probably more frustrating.

and go play amnesia and make sure you don't crap yourself (because if minecraft scares you... dang that's sad)
I've played Amnesia, light closed on a 42 inch TV sounds on. It's thrilling, but I wasn't scared as much as I was annoyed that hiding from enemies in midly black corner in a partially lit room was bad for your mental, you couldn't make sure the enemy was gone cuz looking at it could make discovered, but Daniel is so scared that his teeth could be giving his position and he was expecting himself to kill someone, but not some person-shaped standing there. Even the girl from "Haunting Ground" on PS2 had more balls.
To Daniel's credit, if YOU had tasked yourself to kill someone, would you automatically man up enough to put your hands anywhere NEAR this thing?!

I wouldn't.

I think it works fine.

Get close enough to hit it, then do so before it smacks/shoots/pounces/asplodes you. Really, the combat isn't anything close to the focus, and it does its job just fine as is.

If you don't think so, there's gonna be a mod for that soon, mark my words.
