I've been thinking about getting an MMO (or at least trying a free trial). The problem is which one? There are so many and I don't know which one has what qualities. So which do you think I should try?

Go for World of Warcraft. It is the biggest for a reason.

If not, try Warhammer Online, that's very good.

Pretty sure theres a lot of these threads XD

Anyways, my advice is do several free trials at once, out of the most popular.
After all, they're free.

I was thinking of Eve maybe. And Warhammer Online looks good especially since I like The Warhammer game itself.

I'd suggest you try WoW and see if it's your thing. If it is then you've found the best version of your thing, if you prefer say advanced PvP then I'd suggest WAR.

Eve's hard to get into because all the major groups are formed and controlling stuff. I didn't find it too newbie friendly.

I was thinking I'd wait for Mortal online (evne though my crappy comp probably won't run it). The annoying thing about MMO's is monthly payments.

I had high hopes when playing eve online but when i finally played it the game was so boring lol... very dissapointed. however there is a trial so test it for yourself. other than that how much are you willing to spend per month?

Not much TBH. It's why I avoid MMO's. I prefer pay once and play as much as you like. As Yahtzee said "It's like a second job that you pay for."

MMOGs cater to different play goals. Part of finding one you'll like is figuring out what you will want.

How important is competition with other players? Direct (player-vs.-player) or indirect (who-gets-the-high-score)? Character-based (acquired character abilities) or skill-based (personal ability)?

How important is challenge? Do you like it when a game lets you play an awesome badass mowing your way through opposition, or do you prefer lots of hanging on for dear life?

How important is making "your guy" look cool? Is it more important for your cool stuff to reflect your play ability (games where the coolest-looking stuff is only accessible to the best players) or your design sense?

How important is the social experience? Would you rather it be like a chat room (lively contact with lots of people, most of whom are strangers you might not see again) or like an instant messenger (controlled contact with a small group of people you communicate with regularly)?

Do you have a preference for high-energy (engaging but wearying, forces you to be really attentive and on-the-ball if you want to avoid failure) or low-energy (easy entertainment, stuff that might be a bit duller but that you can enjoy even when tired or distracted) gameplay?

If you havn't got the money for WoW, then Guild Wars is probably a good option, the only MMO's I've played are Guild Wars, WoW (14 day free trial) and Runescape. So don't consider my opinion a good one.

I'd say Eve is the poorest MMO I've ever played (as in I got bored after about 3 hours play time) so I wouldn't go for that one.

If I were you I'd play through all the free trials to see which one you enjoy the most, then go for whatever takes your fancy.

No offence but Runescape sucks. I tried it. It is the most horrible looking game i've ever seen.

I was actually looking forward to Stargate worlds, and this is coming from a guy who quit WoW years ago. Also, TOR and Global agenda and crimecraft look nice if you like paying 15 bucks a month.

Davey woo: Is Guild wars free or just cheap?
Alex P: To answer all your questions: Competiton is not very important. I like a game with a bit of challenge but not imposiible. I prefer concentrating on making my guy more powerful and I don't really care how he looks. If I wanted a social experience I'd go to a chet room. So social experience doesn't matter. I like a game where you can be hardcore when you feel and casual when you tired or lazy. So is there any game that caters to my preferences?

You can do free trials all you want, but none of them reflect even a fraction of what gameplay is like at the level cap. I've been playing WoW since 2005, I played 3+ years of LineageII, (No, I am not Korean)I played WH:O for several months after release...

Let me give you a couple tips to help you avoid wasting MASSIVE amounts of time:

1. MMO's are for people who want to play the same game for years on end. The best players in WoW are the ones who are established and regular. If you want to play a game sparsely or only when your busy life/work schedule permits, I would highly advise steering clear of MMO's. Why? because you will be average. Forever.

2. In my firm and experienced opinion, the grind to the level cap is the mediocre part that everyone *gets through*. It is a destination, not a journey. You will not enjoy it in WoW if you are on a PvP server, that is for damn sure. (LoL bored level 80's)

3. Finally, I stress the point that you should not try an MMO if you are not truly seeking a never-ending game. Thats what they are.

Oh, and enjoy things like expansions coming out, dropping you back to a level playing field with everyone else, only to have to work back up to the top of the food chain.

If these things don't interest you, Stop now.

If they do, Welcome to the world of MMO's.

P.s. (heavy WoW slant on my opinions.. with a touch of LineageII)

Simple answer to this thread.

Try WOW 1st. If you like that then stay there as its the biggest and most polished out there atm. As nearly every other mmo is just a clone of this game you may as well play the biggest one.

If you dont like WOW then try DDO (Dungeons and Dragons online) as its currently the only other fantasy mmo out there thats different. Just be warned the learning curve is steep and the playerbase is a little low atm (but will probably pick up a lot when mod 9 does finally see the light of day) but it has without a doubt the best quest design and combat system in a mmo currently.
