Exactly what the title says really, but I'll give an example that makes me want to vomit blood.

I pick up a controller for the first time since Star Wars Battlefront II to play some Mortem Warfare (the first one) with my brother.

'I think I shall choose a sniper, because I am skilled in this subject and it was amazing fun in Battlefront.'

so we start the match, and I scope in to get a view of my surroundings. and that's when it appeared: Fucking SCOPE DRIFT.

Any one with the smallest increment of fucking rifle training knows how to keep a bead accurate up to AT LEAST fifty yards. and here I was swaying all over the damn place for no reason.

And I feel sorry for those who picked up a scoped rifle after playing Call of Duty, because holding your breath is the last thing you want to do. infact, I find it much easier to take deep breaths while shooting.

So my question in this: what Modern Shooter cliche annoys the hell out of you?

EDIT: I'm getting the conseseus of 'too bland of colours' and 'terrorists and nukes and stuph'. And I actually want to play Bioshock Infinite, as opposed to me previously being reminded of... ... Bioshock 2.

You die in 4 hits, everything is brown, all terrorists are russians or muslim extremists that speak English for whatever reason.

Basically everything in this video

Indeed, that sums my feeling towards modern shooters up quite nicely. Meh, back in the days, games took skill! *shakes cane*

That simply remaining in cover for a few seconds will magically heal all wounds, be they inflicted by bullet, shrapnel, knife or whatever other means. Oh Operation Flashpoint: Red River, how welcome a change you were.

Even in fallout vegas it annoys me and I love that game.
Bring back the colours! The world is grey enough, thank you.

I'm looking forward to Bioshock Infinate now that looks like a game that knows how to use colour effectively and emotively.

Me too <3

Have you watched the trailer where Elizabeth says "don't let him take me back" and puts your hands around her neck? The way she says that... I honestly felt a little emotional at the sound of her voice and the look in her face.

Really, the paradigm of (perceived) realism over what actually makes sense gameplay-wise is rather annoying. Not that realism is a universally bad trait, but I've seen some really stupid things in games over the years that would never have made it into the game if somebody ever once sat down and thought about the thing from a gameplay is-this-actually-fun-and-balanced perspective.

Of course, you have cases like in Il-2: Birds of Prey, where the designers aren't even trying to balance the planes so they compliment each other: they're trying to give their flight characteristics as much fidelity as practical. And it works. So like I said, not a universal thing but...man...

Note: this is not specifically about CoD.

No you take 3 hits take cover and take 3 more hits and repeat for infinite bullet soakage.

Has anyone else noticed that in the new GoW3 ads on YouTube (the little 15 second ones that pop up before Achievement Hunter videos), when Marcus Can't-be-buggered-to-spell-your-god-awful-last-name says "I've got to find him" it really sounds like he's saying "I've got to phone it in?" Because I have, and it's hilarious.
Also, it's rated M for Machoo!

Sigh. Yeah, the whole M-rated shooter scene is getting exhausting. It's just like every few months the same producer says "HEY! Remember that game? The one with all the gray and brown and bullets and guys with dust-clogged voice boxes? The one that made us ALL THAT MONEY? Let's make it again! Again!"

No matter how nice everything looks, it's still varying shades of brown, gray, & olive green.

It's a total credit to the artists working on the game. The voice acting and visual style actually make me feel a mixture of upset and desperate - desperate to keep Elizabeth out of harm. And we've yet to even play the game! Lol.

Have you seen this trailer.

Pretty intense and disturbing. Loving the steampunk influences and the use of daylight as a way to make the horror more disconcerting.

Definately not a cliched shooter.

All of them, or more accurately the combination of all of them. Boring and unrealistic modern setting, bad ai, regen health, cover-based shooting, etc. Makes for boring shooting gallery gameplay. That's why stuff like borderlands is such a breath of fresh air. For instance, in CoD you heal by hiding. In borderlands you heal by throwing a flaming bird at ppl.
