Fucking lazer bullets, i'm looking at you CoD. BF2, the ARMA and Op Flash games have bullet drop, why are we still shooting lazer bullets in CoD???

My issue with modern shooters? The way to slow movement speed... God I hate Halo and how super slow you run. Heck, I hate how it took forever for Bungie just to add a 'Sprint' function.

What's more, the whole lack of new things in the department are starting to wear thin. That's why I love Brink. It's new and refreshing. Sure it may not be the greatest game ever, but atleast it kept me from the obvious CoD references. And that's bonus if there ever was one.
(That and infinite sprint. Thank god...)

desperate to keep Elizabeth out of harm. And we've yet to even play the game! Lol.
Have you seen this trailer.

Pretty intense and disturbing. Loving the steampunk influences and the use of daylight as a way to make the horror more disconcerting.

Definately not a cliched shooter.
You know, I really don't like the look of that gameplay. Sadly it just doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. Which sucks, 'cause the story looks amazing.

Thta's a shame different strokes for different folks, You could always watched a 'lets play' to experience the story I guess.

Btw that video is from quite a while ago so they might have changed stuff up since then. It also seems a bit 'on rails' so could be just a demonstration of different things you can do. If you see what I mean.

Regenerating health (don't give me that bullshit of "well, you know it's 2011 the industry evolved"), Brown graphics, extremely frequent checkpoints so the game can save automatically making the game incredibly easy and just the fact that a lot of companies turn their popular games into shooters (XCOM, Resident Evil, Fallout even though i like Fallout 3 it is extremely different from the first and second one) makes it a cliché. The First Person Shooters genre ITSELF became a cliché because everybody makes them because they are easy money.

Well, quite a few of them.

But the biggest one is that you always play as a soldier of some sort.

To me, that tends to indicate lazy writing. See, every story needs conflict of some kind. Whether it take the form of combat, or the struggle to survive in a hostile environment, or even a love triangle, conflict is the core of drama. And of course that conflict requires a plausible cause or justification. And that's where things get complicated. So many writers just say, "Oh fuck it, it's a war and you're a soldier. Just shoot anything that isn't speaking english." Then knock off for the day.

I mean... I want to be part of what's going on and the characters seem really exciting (the most excited I've been to interact with a video game's characters since Knights of the Old Republic) but the actual mechanics of the game are everything I put a game down for, lol. I enjoy the Call of Duty (for lack of a better term) style of having an objective and making your own way there, killing the people in the way how you wish. Really scripted sequences make me feel like I'm pressing buttons during a movie. I enjoy making my own calls and being the one to make the action move forward. From the looks of it, Infinite is more like... the game is the one making things go and you just have to do what it tells you. If that makes sense?

But that's all from the very limited gameplay I've seen and that one demo.

You die in 4 hits
You remain vertical after being hit three times? Wow, that's pretty good. I stopped playing MW for the simple reason that if one single bullet anywhere in the world even begins to think about the possibility of coming within half a mile of you on some theoretical future date, you die. Enemy enters the room, he doesn't even have to fire, you just die. Surrounded by your own teammates? You die. And so forth.

I'm sure all the 13-year-old MW players are thinking, "Dude, you just suck." I've been playing shooters since Doom. Yes, the old one. I was *awesome* at Half-Life deathmatch back in the day, and am very good indeed at Team Fortress and Left 4 Dead. I respectfully submit that belonging to the twitch category does not, in itself, indicate any measure of quality in CoD or any other game.

The fact that everything is brown and grey.

Even in fallout vegas it annoys me and I love that game.
Well, it DOES take place after a nuclear apocalypse...

I'm the opposite, lol. I much prefer having to treat every single enemy like something that can kill you, rather than waves of fodder.

I kind of imagine that it will be more interactive than that, I think that demo was just to show the capabilities tbh.

Jumping and quickscoping, the cliches that ruined the modern FPS.

Also the lack of color, that too.

Low health was always something I had liked in shooters, ever since I played Goldeneye, when all combat was reduced to running around in circles waiting five minutes before the friggin Klobb would actually kill my target.

But I don't really mind high health that much, so long as the game isn't going for realism. Nowadays, actually, I find that health is the one thing Modern Shooters are doing right.

so we start the match, and I scope in to get a view of my surroundings. and that's when it appeared: Fucking SCOPE DRIFT.

Any one with the smallest increment of fucking rifle training knows how to keep a bead accurate up to AT LEAST fifty yards. and here I was swaying all over the damn place for no reason.
I agree it's not realistic. But neither is the "take three bullets, then duck for five seconds and be totally fine" bullshit all shooters seem to employ these days. Neither is coming back to life, or the layout of the maps, or not being allowed to have an extended clip and a laser sight at the same time, or not being allowed to paint your face until you kill a bunch of guys, or, or or or. I could make the obvious remark about scope drift being for game balance, but I've always thought sniper to be a lazy, overpowered class, even with drift.

I think what people aren't realizing about the whole "where did color go" thing, is that for years people were demanding graphical realism. War games will look brown dark and gritty, because quite often, War scenes are brown dark and gritty.

Where are all the colorful games?

On the Nintendo system. All the cartoony, Disney-esque colorfulness is on the Nintendo system.

Ok let the hate engine begin, brown color, gray color, lame characters, two gun limits, regenerating health, "realistic shooter", anything out of cod, halo, medal of honor, gears of war, regenerating health, lack of creativity, regenerating health.

People thinking they know everything about guns/war/military because they know the name of some stuff from games, call of duty specifically.

I was recently watching Full Metal Jacket with my friend and his younger brother, at the scene with the shooter in the building his brother shouts "bull-crap! you can't shoot that far with an AK-47, there isn't even an ACOG on it!" - face-palming ensued.

In other words games pretending to be realistic and kids believing it.
